Poopie. This was supposed to be a reply to the "Where does Firefly take place" thread and not the start of a new one, but it didn't go where I wanted it to go.

I've read this thread through and I'm still not certain a consensus was found. Where does Firefly take place? In fact, I thought in the early episodes some of the planet shots looked like Mars or Saturn. That these names for moons were just referring to moons near planets in our own solar system. That the core planets were maybe a reterraformed Venus, the Earth That Was, the Moon, and some artificial satelites, and that the rim planets were Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and all their moons... But then the ecosphere doesn't extend past Mars so that couldn't work.

Maybe Whedon didn't plan that far ahead on purpose. Kinda like how the technobabblers of STNG couldn't figure out how to get past Heisenberg for the transporters so they just made up Heisenberg compensators and left it at that. Maybe Whedon just purposefully avoided explaining any of that since it's 500 years from now and there'd be no hope of a writer making any of that believable, and that it had nothing to do with the stories he wanted to tell anyway..

I mean, like the tv series CHIPS didn't spend any time on the actual construction of the California Highways which were being patrolled. The show was too busy chasing over them and blowing them up to bother with the petty details.

Anyway. Not shiny. Still confused.

It is my understanding the press kit came with a map, that featured the "Jupiter Nebula" very prominently. We're still arguing about whether its all in one system or several star systems, (and the needs of FTL drive, etc.) But again, damn Faux shut it down before this question could be answered.

I don't think Joss really worried about it, because it does not matter. What you need for his stories is planets, moons or worlds that the ship can travel to. Firefly is about the people and the situations, not the physics that geeks like me find so fascinating, but is irrelevant to the stories. A spaceship is cooler than a stage coach, or sea going vessle, and you get a greater range of opportunities from that mode of travel, but really, its about going to multiple places and what you do there, rather than astrography lessons.

You are absolutely right, It has nothing to do with the stories he is trying to tell anyway. Still, there are lunatics like myself that are bothered by such irrelavancies.:smiles:

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"
