FIREFLY EPISODE DISCUSSIONS

i heard Nathan Fillion was contracted to NBC, doesn't that mean he wouldn't be able to resume the role of ' Mal Reynolds'?

So anyone know what's up. I could almost swear i've read that some where. What does that mean for the series and the movie?

I had heard this too. My guess is that Fillion is not available to return to Firefly as a regular series - at least not in a full time capacity. But I don't think the current plan is for firefly to return to tv - i think whedon is working on the movie script.

I believe Fillion will be available to do a movie, though, as most actors seems to participate in movies when their tv shows are not filming (summer hiatus, etc.)

Nathan was contracted under a "talent holding deal" to film a TV series called Alligator Point for NBC. However, it was not picked up for the 2003-2004 season (bad for him, good for a potential return to Firefly). I'd guess that means he's back to being a working stiff, looking for roles as they come along... and with his talent, I doubt he'll be looking for long...

For more info on the show, check out this little site I found:

This could however perhaps lead us to another more distressing series of questions and concerns. The further away from Firefly's initial run that we get, the harder it is going to be for the whole gang to return. We also don't know the details about the set itself or the costumes or the many other things that made Firefly what it was. Is every single set piece in storage somewhere untouched waiting for the day when Whedon finds a more permanent home for it? I mean they couldn't just rebuild the entire set from scratch could they? It looked like a set that was at least partly made by spare parts. It's not exactly something easily replicated. The look of the Firefly "Serenity" for the film should be identical to that of the series, to make even a motion picture believable. Otherwise they'll have to deal with the change in appearance in exposition for the film. Perhaps the gang came into some money and renovated the ship.

And what of the cast? Do we need all nine? What if some of them can't return. If Nathan Fillion can't play Malcolm Reynolds but everybody else comes back, would that be sufficient? Could the show go on without Gina Torres or Adam Baldwin? Not likely since they were sort of the core of the Serenity's crew. I know I personally won't want to see a film Firefly without Kaylee in the engine room. I'm sure all fans of the show each have their own favorite. Shepherd Book, Simon, River and Inara are less mandatory for the return voyage. If there are conflicts with them, it's easier to write their characters out of the story either temporarily or permanently, but it will affect the fan contingent if there's no way for all nine of them to return.

That's gotta be a contract nightmare for the people at Universal. Being able to afford nine actors who each know they have a loyal following of fans who will be unhappy if they don't return in their roles, but since Firefly will have to appeal to more than a small loyal following, are these even concerns that weigh heavily on the minds of Universal or Mutant Enemy? Is it not more important that the story go forward? Could they create an entirely new set, even perhaps hire a new crew to play the roles? So long as the story itself didn't suffer?

The further away we get from the day Firefly got cancelled, the harder recreating that magic is going to be.

Chances are someone on the crew still has continuity photos of the set because as they were filming "The Message," everyone knew they had been screwed over by Fox but apparantly Whedon was already talking about a "future Firefly project." And yes, the set was partially built out of spare parts, especially Serenity's engine and part of the bridge; it's covered in the commentary and extra features of the DVD. If it comes to it, they could always use the episodes to rebuild the set

I don't think any of the cast would jeopardize the movie for any reason because they seem to care about Firefly so much (again, based on the commentary and extra DVD features). Contrary to this:

Simon and River are actually the two most important characters because the movie is supposed to explore those two characters.

Well it can be argued that all nine characters are indispensible. The Tam plotline was becoming very important, but the clues that Shepherd Book was more than just a shepherd were bubbling over too. So if any one of these nine actors asked for too much money for the film, it's game over.

I mean, earlier I was asking for opinions on which of the nine actors are entirely indispensible, but I do agree it would be less like returning to Serenity if any of the nine are absent.
