Well, they weren't. They were perfect. I concur. I was real leery on the talking racoon. My worst fear was going to see the movie and there being a host of kiddies in the audience, eager to see a talking rodent, ala Splinter. Thankfully this was not the case, on either account! Very good flick, though I'd not call it 'great'. Comparable to The Avengers. Some have liked it more, I wasn't quite as sold, but there was some freaking deadly humor. Almost lost my breath a time or two... very good stuff. Select to view spoiler: Minor bummer - I didn't recognize Nathan F or Alexis Denisof, as they were deep in make up / cgi. Oh well.

We are all geeks for sci-fi and a little giddy to go and see this film. So, I'll be seeing you in the funny papers. SGGI was hugely looking forward to this too, which is maybe why I felt a little let down. Expectations too high. I wanted another avengers, which I loved. Saw that one three times in Times Square so I could walk back to grand central and check out the buildings that got trashed in the final battle. :) I'm reconsidering that maybe I ought to see GotG again to see if I'm being unfair. Sure it was all over the place, but really funny and the lead guy was quite good. Yay for having an unknown (to me) take the lead so I don't know what to expect of him. Dave Boutista was also really good. I liked his few perfectly delivered lines in last summer's Roddick. And damn Zoe Saldana! She just gets better with every movie. Yeah, I think I need to see it again. Also want to pick up the avengers tie ins. I caught a few, but I bet there were more. I won't say anything about them now. I'll wait another week before I go all out with spoilers. :) Oh, one more thing: the after credits bonus scene was just weird, but falls right in line with the theme of the movie. Goofy silliness! Hilarious actually, for us children of the 80s. Looking forward to your take on it SGG. *-------------------------------------------------* What trolls reveal about themselves when they troll: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=57532 *-------------------------------------------------*

Quote:The Avengers, Superman, and Batman taught us that comics dictate what movies you make. Guardians showed us that isn't the case, and that Marvel has the ability to dictate which comic books you buy, based on the movies it makes. (This obviously means that the studio should double-down on a Squirrel Girl movie.) This should give Marvel a ton of confidence to experiment In a sense, Marvel is working with a freedom its biggest rivals don't have. It doesn't need a recognizable name or people to be familiar with its source material to turn out a $94 million blockbuster. The company doesn't have to keep plucking stories from its A-list. . . . the hero that fans are really amped about and want to see in the movies is Captain Marvel (a.k.a. Carol Danvers, formerly known as Ms. Marvel). While she isn't featured in the Avengers movie, Captain Marvel has been an integral member of The Avengers in the comics. The brilliant Kelly Sue DeConnick has written the Air force pilot-turned-superhero Danvers into a badass (yet imperfect) leader of the Avengers and a feminist icon. DeConnick was there when Carol changed her superhero name to Captain, and traded in her skimpy outfit for a more modest captain's uniform. She also packs the same kind of punch (thanks to photon beams, super strength, superhuman durability, and flight at the speed of sound) as heavy hitters like Captain America and Iron Man.

I may have admitted I was wrong here, but don't let it make you think I'll ever be wrong in the future. At least, don't let the RWED people think that... ;) Re serious sci-fi: yeah, I like that too, though I think it's harder to carry off. My love of sci-fi that is scientifically interesting is part of why I had a hard time adjusting to this movie. But if you accept it as just a fun escapist ride, it's hard to find fault with it. As for "serious" things to appreciate in GotG, I think the production value (CGI) and the tightness of the script are pretty damned amazing. Clear example: the prison. (minor spoiler warning) It went from checking into prison through exposition/team forming in prison to prison break in moments. Grok grabbing the battery to start the break was an ingenious and amusing and seamless way to keep the plot moving. This movie had very few dead spots, yet managed to not become a mind-numbing ***every moment is the climax!!!*** snoozefest like Armeggedon. (I could do nothing but eyeroll through half of that. May not have helped that I saw it with petroleum drilling engineers who scoffed at Bruce's choose of drill bit.) *-------------------------------------------------* What trolls reveal about themselves when they troll: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=57532 *-------------------------------------------------*
