America loves a winner!

Happened to find a couple of movies on Netflix which for some reason or another, seemed worth a look see, on one boring day...

Penelope With Christina Ricci. I was surprised by the fact that there were so many recognizable actors in this movie. Also, this came right after ( or before ) Black Snake Moan, which is about as contrasting a movie as there is for an actor. Not sure which was made first, but that's some range.

The other, Escape from Planet Earth. While some may say this is just Planet 51 in reverse, I liked it. It had a very Monsters vs Aliens feel to it too. I don't know how it fared at the box office in comparison to those other movies, but my sidewalk impression is that didn't do so well. I wonder why that might be. Too repetitive ? I mean, while done very well for its genre, it may have been seen as lacking in originality. I don't know, but it has a nice voice cast, so I'm wondering if maybe this movie wasn't promoted very well ? Stuff like that bothers me some... why 1 movie gets so much exposure, while others either don't, or just don't catch on. ( Gee, why would that ever bother me ? )

Unlike say, “Doogal” or “Hoodwinked Too!,” at least you won’t want to gouge your eyes out after this one.

Interestingly, I saw Hoodwinked Too just tonight, and man... what a disappointment.

I had heard very little good about the movie, and it appears there's a good reason.

Never mind they kept some ( but not all ) of the original voice talent, the real disaster was in the animation. And the story. Ugh. Lacking was all the charm and THOUGHT which went into the first movie. Did everyone let their interns try their hand at movie making for a change ? It just never felt right.

Why did they make Flipper's legs so freakishly long ? He's a frog ! He's suppose to be short. He was short in the first movie. No explanation, at all, for why he appears to be walking around on stilts. I mean, I actually thought they'd come around and say something in the movie, it was so absurd. But nope. Nodda.

The original, for what ever reason, really is a guilty pleasure of mine. Might be the music, I dunno.

" Too " was simply lacking any heart... it was an arcade game, set on auto play. Just not very much fun.

Oh, and Doogal ? Never heard of it. Looks entirely uninteresting, despite the formidable voice talent listed ( Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Kyle Minogue, William H. Macy, Chevy Chase, Kevin Smith... ) I'll pass.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

I'm just a red pill guy in a room full of blue pill addicts.

I didn't see Escape From Planet Earth, but I did see Penelope..........

I agree, Ricci's range is, without question, extraordinary. Penelope was a quiet little fable that was simple and sweet without being too sappy. The script was a tad weak, but I enjoyed her performance and that of Catherine O'Hara, who played the mom. James McAvoy was perfectly cast as the love interest, although I was disappointed by Reese Witherspoon. It was a cute story.

Black Snake Moan was unusual, but it really showed off her range and the contrast was, to say the least, remarkable. If you really want to see her "work" take a look at an indy film called Buffalo 66 (1998). You almost won't recognize her. Written and directed by Vincent Gallo (who I'm not particularly fond of) but she gives a solid performance. Baby girl has talent.

I've tried to get several people to watch Black Snake Moan (which had a really awesome sound track BTW) and they have these preconceived notions about the title and won't watch it

Mirror Mask. By the offspring/school of Jim Henson. Visually stunning. I bought the DVD and rewatch it every few months.

I blame the title, it really is misleading. People think it's a sexually charged movie, it is somewhat, but not in the way they think..........

It goes places that, in the hands of these two actors, is masterful. Both Ricci and Samuel L. are in rare form.

To take it a step further, re-watch her performance in Monster. It was nothing short of genius, Theron owes a piece of her Oscar to Ricci. An understated masterpiece. Ricci never receives the credit she deserves for her roles, she is one of the best actors of our time (she is the Martin Scorsese of actors).

I'm partial to The Fall, so I think I will look for this movie. Fantasy stories appeal to me.
