There is another movie in theaters now demonstrating the phenomenon of diminishing returns on each new film in the series. Kung Fu Panda 4 (or is it 5 if you count Secrets of the Furious Five?) has the same problem as Ghostbusters: each new movie sells fewer tickets worldwide than the previous movie, but Panda is not yet losing money.

Yeah... but at the same time it's also different. It certainly made a lot more money than I ever would have expected it to had it interested me in the least and I made any commentary about it before it was released.

Also, somehow, they really managed to slash the budget on KFP4. It only cost $85 Million to make. Adjusted for inflation KFP3 cost $182,188,353, KFP2 cost $208,277,800, and the original KFP cost $188,586,132.

So on an $85 Million budget and with $504 Million gross worldwide, they've managed to make 593% of the production budget back. Had they not slashed their prior budgets by more than half and went with something like $190 Million for the budget instead, they'd be sitting at only 265% of the production budget. Still a win, but just barely.

And with that in mind, back to the topic of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and it's $100 Million budget...

Had they instead kept the budget to only $75 Million like they did with Afterlife, they'd be breathing a sigh of relief as they just broke even on Sunday with every remaining day in the theaters being profit, instead of still being $63 Million in the hole.

Had they gone beyond that and did what the makers of Kung Fu Panda 3 did and slashed their budget from the previous movie by 53% and only spent $40 Million on it and now they'd be looking at 470% returns on the production budget. Not quite KFP4's 593% return, but with gas left in the tank it should have easily hit a 500% return on investment before it exits theaters.

They've got to get these budgets under control if they want to survive in the future.

That was pretty much the main factor for the inevitable Frozen Empire failure for Sony. I listed all the other reasons out in the OP and whichever page had the post where I broke down all the inflation adjusted numbers for every Ghostbusters movie, but even if none of those other reasons existed there was no way this movie was not going to lose money as soon as it was confirmed it cost $100 Million to make.

Well... this is probably a post better suited for the 2024 Hollywood thread than the Ghostbusters thread.

Aside from my tempered enthusiasm of Deadpool 3 because of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return, I can't say I disagree with you. None of that list looks appealing to me, but because so many of them are sequels or prequels or reboots I wouldn't even have to look into most of them because I already know I have no interest.

"Not Another Church Movie"??? Jesus Christ. I thought we were finally rid of those low-effort parody movies.

I don't need to see Ezra either. We had something better than Ezra back in the 90s. I'm good.

Are you an elitist? Hollywood is going broke because it never knew what the people wanted for entertainment. That is summarized by Hollywood screenwriter William Goldman's famous quote "Nobody in this business knows anything."

Meanwhile, Tyler Perry has gotten rich making stinking movies far, far away from Hollywood in Atlanta. He knows what Hollywood never will.

Tyler Perry stands on the top position in the list of richest actor in the world 2024 with a net worth of $1 Billion, followed by Jerry Seinfeld, Dwayne Johnson and Shah Rukh Khan.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire doesn't even make Bruce's Top 10 for the weekend, and the 10th spot is only predicted to make $2 Million.

I'm a little surprised by that since it only lost -23% and -27% over the last two weekends, and a -30% drop this weekend would put it at $2.275 Million. But it did lose over 600 theaters this week.

Any way that turns out, the US gross alone will bump it up to over $190 Million.

It may possibly see another $5 Million internationally come Monday if it keeps the same trajectory it has over the last several weeks, but if Bruce is already predicting a much larger drop this weekend in the US, I really have no reason to believe that it won't see the same larger drop internationally as well.

It may or may not end up at $195 Million this weekend. That's probably a coin flip, but I'm leaning heavily toward it not doing so. If it does, it would still be $55 Million short of breaking even at that point with no possible path ahead of it to come close to breaking even for Sony, having then only grossed about $7.5 Million this week worldwide and a much higher likelihood of losing -50% or more week after week from here on out.

As I said from the beginning, had Sony maintained the same $75 Million budget of Afterlife, it would have only needed $187.5 Million to break even. That number was met just this last Sunday once the International numbers had come in for the previous week.

But with that additional $25 Million added to the budget in this sequel, that was an additional $62.5 Million it needed to break even that it will never overcome.

I think Paul Rudd right now is at the top of the list actors for Hollywood to start axing the bloated paydays with his back-to-back flops of Quantumania last year and Frozen Empire in 2024. That's a shame. I like Paul Rudd, but these budgets have to be trimmed by 25% to 50% or more going forward or Hollywood is going to go broke. If Paul Rudd and any of these other celebrities like Gosling and Cavill can't bring people to see movies on name recognition alone, they don't deserve these huge paydays anymore.

That might also be said as well about the "last movie star" Tom Cruise, after his massive Mission Impossible failure last year. The only thing that might save him with that one is the fact that both parts were shot at the same time and there's a possibility they front-loaded most of those budget costs on the figure for the first part last year (maybe for tax purposes???). But if the budget for Part 2 comes in just as high or even higher than Part 1, that's going to be two massive flops in a row for Cruise as well.

The Church of Scientology will not be happy.

Ghostbusters did just barely crack $195 Million.

$195,103,000

It's still outperforming even my updated prediction tables by around $3.5 Million for the 7th week, and so it's about a week ahead of where I thought it would be now. That's good-ish news. It won't be nearly enough though.

I'm interested in seeing the final number. It's pretty hard to really pin down anything this year because the box office is behaving far different than it did last year.

I'm sure it's going to hit $200 Million at this point, but I have no idea how long that will take.

My guess is that it falls short of that by the end of next weekend, but it probably will manage it by the weekend of the 18th if it's not pulled from a ton of theaters here and internationally before then.

California produces too many movies. Most are not good but if you wait for one and a half months, the not-particularly entertaining film will be available at a price that matches the time-wasting and worthlessness of the product.

Just to note, the leak of the movie had nothing to do with the failure of Ghostbusters. This has been an obvious flop since opening weekend and it's all been documented in this thread.

Okay.

But the problem is bigger than that in 2024.

California isn't making too many movies right now. They've hardly put out anything compared to any year prior to now in the last 30 years. They've got to pad out the theaters every week with old movies.

Joe Biden*'s economy is what's killing Hollywood in 2024. Up through the middle of 2023 people were still gladly going to the theaters in droves to watch shitty movies.

They're not doing that anymore now.

Yeah... That's just about right.

After Day 59 in theaters, Ghostbusters is sitting at $199,141,000 worldwide, or 199.141% of the Production Budget. It grossed just over $400k this weekend in the US (I don't know what it did internationally this week since I stopped tracking this movie altogether weeks ago).

It's still in 819 theaters this week, down from 1,418 last week. It probably makes $100-$120k between Monday-Thursday, and then will lose more theaters before next weekend.

If it's still playing internationally and making anything at all, it probably shouldn't have any trouble limping over the $200 Million mark. But not even close to the $250 Million it needed to make.

There's also the fact that Bruce adds and subtracts international numbers for 6 months or more after a movie leaves the theaters, so when it's this close I would never make a guess that it doesn't hit $200 Million. But based off of the figures alone without accounting for Bruce making changes, I wonder if it has enough gas left in the tank to cross $200 Million if it isn't playing anywhere else internationally. It's only going to get $350k max by the end of next weekend, and it's all downhill from there.

Challengers (2024) is a failure.
Production Budget: $55,000,000 (worldwide box office is 1.4 times production budget)

Incorrect. Failure is NOT habitual in Hollywood. If it were, it would have collapsed a long time ago.

Your version of history, as is your version of pretty much everything, is a fantasy you made up in your head and will not be discussed here. Take it to Twitter.

Meanwhile, the studio execs have finally figured out what they were doing wrong these last 5 to 10 years and they're in the process of firing everyone involved. The writer/actor strikes backfired hugely and ended up being a great excuse to axe 2/3rds of them without any consequences.

Every movie is a success for the people listed in the credits at the end because those people get paid even if the studio produced another turd that leaves the more sensible members of the theater audience disappointed at wasting four hours on a movie, plus their money. I hope that many more money managers lose their jobs since they approve of the making of mostly turds.

Note the 1991 date, 6ix, but you can find more stories exactly like this at https://www.google.com/search?q=studio+heads+fired:

In April 1991, at the peak of his power as one of Hollywood’s top executives, Sony Pictures chairman Jon Peters left Los Angeles on a corporate jet bound for New York, where he had been summoned to meet with his boss, Mickey Schulhof, then-head of the company’s U.S. operations.

The dashing and even daredevil executive was anxious. A vague sense of dread had come over him, and it only grew greater when he learned that his longtime partner, best friend and fellow Sony chairman Peter Guber, would not be flying with him. Hadn’t the two men been this close for decades, chatting many times a day, seeing each other multiple times a week, building their own mini-empire by producing such blockbusters as Batman and The Witches of Eastwick, before being wooed from Warner Bros. to Sony in a deal that cost their Japanese bosses a staggering $700 million?

It seemed odd that Guber wasn’t on the plane now, and even odder that lately he had failed to return Peters’ calls, prompting the latter to drive to his friend’s house in search of an explanation — only for Guber to dodge and weave and leave Peters with the assumption that he was safe, while another executive was in trouble.

In fact, for weeks now, the one-time hairdresser had blinded himself to reality, swatting away rumors that there were strains between him and his brother in blood. After all, he noted, they’d just been to see their joint therapist, the author of Healing Your Aloneness: Finding Love & Wholeness Through Your Inner Child. There, according to Nancy Griffin and my colleague Kim Masters’ Hit & Run: How Jon Peters and Peter Guber Took Sony for a Ride in Hollywood, Guber had assured his buddy: “I love you. No, I don’t love you — I feel like I’m in love with you.”

Love fades. Passion fizzles. Even the tightest of bonds ultimately frays in the mosh pit of Hollywood. And so Peters discovered when he stepped off the plane in New York and made his way to Schulhof’s office, where he learned he was out of a job.

“I was numb,” he told Griffin and Masters. “I was catatonic…. It was like a part of me died.”

***

Death comes easily in Hollywood. Each little prick draws some of our blood, each nick drains us of our vital force. The unkindest cut of all is being fired.

But if they're making a project that nobody is paying for, they end up losing money until they fold and they kill the golden goose.

It must have been yanked from a lot of international theaters after writing that, and it only remains in 228 theaters this week in the US.

It's at $199,645,000 worldwide right now.

It only made $25k on Thursday and it was showing in more than 3 times as many theaters. It only made $330k this weekend.

It's hit $200 Million with rounding, but will it actually hit that mark before it's gone?

It is quite possible it only has 4 more days before it's gone. It's going to need at least 2 more weekends without losing any more theaters to get there unless Bruce can dig up $350k out from under the international couch cushions.

Hey! It looks like Bruce found some money in the international couch cushions.

It's at $200,488,155 right now, with only $58k of that $800k gain coming from the US Box office this week.

Congrats on your milestone there, even though you still lost just shy of $50 Million for Sony.

It will have at least one more week in theaters. Bruce says the theater count for Frozen Empire this week has been reduced to 135 theaters.

My prediction for $200 Million was on April 29th, so I'm counting this as another win for me.

June 6th appears to have been Frozen Empire's last day in US theaters with a total gross of $7,896.

Worldwide Total stands at $200,690,997.

Frozen Empire cost $100 Million and needed $250 Million to break even. This is a loss of $49 Million for Sony Pictures.

I'm not even convinced that you can blame this loss entirely on the terrible economy either. Afterlife didn't really do all that well compared to its budget just three years ago. In fact, the final Afterlife worldwide gross was only $2.9 Million less than what Frozen Empire just got.

Sure... inflation has killed the value of the dollar quite a bit between 2021 and 2024, so this did happen to an extent here, but the real problems that Frozen Empire were facing were spelled out in the OP of this thread.

Frozen Empire never had the capability of making the kind of money required to justify its $100 Million budget. Period.

Had they managed to keep the budget to Afterlife's $75 Million, they would have broken even at $187.5 Million and at least walked away with $12.5 Million gross profit. (They walked away with just a little over $15 Million profit on Afterlife).

This movie was just a bad idea all around. I would not expect to hear an announcement for a trilogy.

If some fools in suits decide to greenlight a 3rd movie, I'd suggest you cut the budget down to only $50 Million. Maybe you can start by giving the actors a resonable payday if they want the job, and tell them that the craft services tables are a lost benefit and they can brown bag their lunches to work like the rest of us do.
