Disney couldn't quite get below $1.9 BILLION in losses this weekend.

TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.5x RoT]: -$1,901,147,070
TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.0x RoT]: -$865,147,070

Disney has appeared to already come out and say they're not even going to bother updating international numbers for The Marvels until it's over, so we may not know what the real number for this movie will be in quite some time if that's true. I hear Disney only expects it to make $210 Million worldwide at the end, so they believe it's got another $23 Million left in the tank.

Despite what the rage-baiters say, Wish is not putting up Strange World numbers. It's already got $81 Million, and Strange World only did $69.5 Million. Although, if you look at the Production Budgets for both, Strange World made 52% of its PB, and Wish has only made 41% so far. Wish is a colossal flop to cap off Disney's 100th Anniversary year, but I have little doubt it will end up recouping more of its PB than Strange World did by the end of its run.

Unless Poor Things and All of Us Strangers by Fox Searchlight had $46 Million budgets like Chevalier did and flop as hard as it did, there's very little chance Disney ends the year $2 BILLION in the hole for 2023. If they're lucky and the budgets for those two movies were small, it may not even lose $1.9 BILLION. But it will certainly be over $1.8 BILLION + in losses at the Box Office for Disney in 2023.

I just looked into Magazine Dreams, the FOX Searchlight flick starring Johnathan Majors that Disney took off the release schedule for 2023. I won't be adding it to Disney's woes for 2023... at least not yet. There's talk that it could still be released at some point. The budget for it was only $7 Million anyhow, so unlike Peter Pan and Wendy's $170 Million loss, this would have been a drop in the bucket.

International trends also say the Age of Superhero seems over, the Supermans, Black Widow, Shazams, Captain Marvels is done

You will have some which still make money like Spider-Man No Way Home but over all they are all flopping

Superheros might flop but Barbie made money for WB, now they will search for other kids toys? or maybe video games??

FNaF still making money overseas

I don't think there is one.

That movie got pushed back to 2024 or even 2025 at this point. I didn't make a Snow White thread yet.

Wish made $275,744 on Christmas Day.

The Marvels made $8,239 on Christmas Day.

Even though it's been in the theaters almost as long as The Marvels, Songbirds and Snakes made a million. And even though it sucks and will be DC's fourth and final flop of 2023, Aquaman 2 made $10 Million.

The Marvels is done, and has only made $200,023,649 worldwide on a $275 Million budget, losing Disney somewhere in the area of $450 Million to $475 Million when the final numbers are tallied up.

Wish isn't far behind in its journey, only making $144,543,376 on a $200 Million budget and losing Disney somewhere in the area of $325 to $350 Million itself.

Combined, and with a combined budget of $475 Million, Disney's last two movies of 2023 only now finally grossed $50 Million more than Five Nights at Freddy's grossed worldwide. $50,372,722, to be exact.

But FNAF was available to stream legally on day one and only cost $20 Million to make, or only 4.21% of the combined budgets of Wish and The Marvels.

NOTE 1: With most sites including Variety and Deadline calling films that grossed 2.0x of their budget failures, and most movies sites tracking the success or failure of a movie's ability to break even based off if it can gross 2.5x of its Production Budget, I have now made 2.5x the marker for whether a movie is a failure or not.

The 2.0x numbers will still be tallied for the rest of the year, but if I choose to track movies again next year I will only be keeping track of 2.5x.

NOTE 2: To not completely ignore international changes from week to week, I've simplified the explanation of +/- money any movie makes whether it's still in theaters or not for each entry. Just one single line now.

It would be impossible to gauge how much money they lose on streaming on a show-to-show basis, but it appears I can tell you how much money the shows cost to produce and how poorly they are received.

NOTES ON STREAMING (07/19/2023): It has been reported that the 6 episodes of Secret Invasion cost $212 Million to make, or $35.3 Million per episode. That's quite expensive considering that almost every scene is just 2 or 3 characters sitting inside a room talking to each other.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2023/07/08/disney-shells-out
-212-million-on-secret-invasion
/

It has also been reported that Disney will lose another $800,000,000+ this quarter on Disney+. This brings the entire loss on their streaming service to over $4 Billion since it was launched.

NOTES ON STREAMING (07/31/2023): The 6th and final episode of Secret Invasion is now officially the lowest rated critics score for any Marvel TV Show property in history at only 7%, with one critic writing "A huge miscalculation in emphasizing brawn over brain, this finale is so misjudged that most MCU fans will want to keep it secret from their collective memory."

Way to spend $212 Million, Disney.

TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.5x RoT]: -$1,874,854,927
TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.0x RoT]: -$821,354,927

This number will get slightly better for Disney in the coming month or two with Poor Things, Wish and The Marvels still in theaters. But I wouldn't expect too much.

Poor Things took 10th place on New Years Day $694,225. Wish took 13th place with $412,705. The Marvels took 24th place with $8,149.

At the end of the year, Disney lost at least $1.85 BILLION at the Box Office in 2023.

The third biggest question is will Disney learn from their mistakes when it doesn't meet expectations.

Expectations, 6ix? This is NOT Toy Story 5. Disney will be fine. The trailer for Lightyear hints that the scriptwriter saw Planet of the Apes. Buzz Lightyear travels at hyperspeed, left only 4 minutes ago, but returns 62 years, 7 months into the future. Things have changed for the worst, but it is not intelligent apes causing problems. Unlike Charlton Heston, who could not save the planet because he got beat up by gorillas, Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear is gonna kick James Brolin's giant robot butt.

Disney hasn't met them with most of their recent flicks, especially the Marvel trash they've been putting out.

6ix, you don't have money, which is why Disney doesn't produce entertainment to please you. You are worthless to Disney unless you have money to buy a ticket. That is how free market capitalism has always worked.

Disney’s decision to oppose Florida’s “don’t say gay” law is all about appealing to Disney’s consumers. Republicans who most yearn to make America “great” again — aging, rural, white men — are at the bottom of the consumer totem pole and lack the financial clout to swing the free market. Conservatives just can’t handle the fact that their political ideology is toxic to people who buy tickets for Disney World and Disney movies.

Fox News agitator Laura Ingraham had previously warned that if companies like Disney didn’t “stay in their lane” — focusing on maximizing profit, but shutting up about politics — “everything will be on the table” if Republicans return to power in November, including “your copyright and trademark protection, your special status within certain states, and even your corporate structure itself.” GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn denounced Disney’s criticism as “how the woke left extremists are using corporations to push their agenda.”

Here’s the irony, though: While Disney controls municipal functions in Reedy Creek, its special tax district, it also foots the bill — for the fire department, sewer treatment, and so on. The elimination of that special status thus will save Disney $163 million annually, passing on $1 billion in debt to taxpayers in Orange and Osceola counties and forcing massive local tax hikes. So what in the name of Adam Smith’s invisible hand is going on here?

DeSantis and the Republican-led Florida legislature voted to dissolve Reedy Creek after DeSantis and Disney began locking horns in March 2022.

There is no longer a special Ready Creek tax district for Disney.

Disney didn't make anything that ANYBODY wanted to see in 2023, and they lost over $1.8 Billion dollars at the box office, not including the Billion+ they lost on their streaming service in 2023.

The only thing I was wrong about in April of 2022 was that Disney was tired of losing money. Now that Echo is out and failing, we'll see if they've finally decided to change course or if they just want to go down with the ship.

For now, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate and be fair to them regarding Echo. That TV series had started production just a few weeks before the above conversation was taking place between Second and I, so they had no freakin' idea what was coming for them in 2023.

In the meantime...

San Francisco Chronicle: Disney’s Pixar to undergo significant layoffs later this year

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/disney-pixar-layoffs-18605
432.php

Quote:

Pixar, the Emeryville animation studio owned by Disney, is set to undergo a significant reduction in its workforce this year.

Initial reports suggested a potential layoff of up to 20%, a projection that would impact approximately 240 employees out of Pixar’s team of 1,200. However, the studio has clarified that these numbers are too high, and the number of affected employees is yet to be determined.

The final count will depend on various factors, including production schedules and staffing requirements for upcoming approved projects. Pixar informed TechCrunch, the first to report the news, that the layoffs are not imminent but are planned for later this year, aligning with the company’s shift toward producing less content.

Sources indicate that many affected people were hired to produce content for the streaming platform Disney+, which is yet to be profitable..

It was only January 12th of 2024 when the above sentence was written and they're already far ahead in the running for the Understatement of the Year with that one.

Quote:

Disney acquired Pixar in 2006, following the success of animation hits like “Toy Story” and “The Incredibles.” In June, the studio underwent a round of layoffs that affected 75 people, including two executives associated with the box office disappointment “Lightyear” — director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman. Last summer’s layoffs marked the first significant cuts for Pixar in a decade.

Looks like season 2 of She Hulk got cancelled and its lead actress has been making pop ups on odd "Twitch gameshows" acting quite humbled and stating that she doesn't have a job, which is quite the role reversal for her from when she was doing interviews wearing "Trans Futures Matter" and bashing men.

I'm sure all the writers have wonderful careers ahead of them part time as WalMart cashiers before they drive back to their overpriced apartments in their overpriced EVs that are going to be repossessed to spend the night with their cats on Twitter.

First time I'd heard a number on it, but She Hulk season one cost Disney $225 Million to produce.

Well... we know they all do it to some extent. Second's mentioned it in these threads probably half a dozen times now.

Hollywood Accounting... Oh how tempting it is to fudge the numbers "just a little bit" when you've got hundreds of millions to play with.

Just... yanno... Don't go overboard with it and get yourself caught. And under no circumstances to you claim to people that you owe money to that Avatar 2 didn't make enough money for them to get paid.

Disney, Film Financing Partner TSG Settle Lawsuit Over “Hollywood Accounting”

https://deadline.com/2024/01/disney-financing-partner-tsg-settle-lawsu
it-over-hollywood-accounting-1235794426
/

Quote:

Disney and TSG Entertainment Finance have settled litigation from August of 2023 when the financier sued the media giant for “rampant self-dealing” and breach of the parties’ revenue participation contract.

“The matter has been resolved,” said a Disney spokesperson.

TSG said it has financed more than 140 films to the tune of $3.3 billion over the years with Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Bohemian Rhapsody, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Martian, The Grand Budapest Hotel, JoJo Rabbit, The Banshees of Inisherin, Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water and Empire of Light.

TSG’s lawsuit filed last August in Los Angeles District Court said that Fox had promised TSG a share of defined gross receipts for pictures under the companies’ long-term participation agreement but that the studio used “nearly every trick in the Hollywood accounting book” to not pay. The financier accused Disney/Fox of self-dealing with FX, Hulu and Disney+, said its revenue began to shrink and that an audit it commissioned showed breaches of contract. It didn’t specify which films were examined.

Elsewhere in the suit it noted 2017 Oscar-winning The Shape of Water was licensed to Fox “in a backroom side deal that appallingly shaved nearly $4 million off of the parties’ previously agreed-upon price.”

TSG said studio had promised to distribute co-financed films “on a fair, reasonable, good faith and non-discriminatory basis” but did not, TSG said, noting former CEO Bob Chapek’s shortened exclusive theatrical windows in favor of pushing content onto Disney+ to grow the streamer’s subscriptions, reducing the theatrical revenue that TSG counted on.

That was an issue for others as well. Scarlett Johansson sued Disney over the release of Black Widow across both movie theaters and Disney+ in 2021. “By 2022, this admittedly thoughtless Disney strategy, and Fox’s pattern of systematic self-dealing and Hollywood Accounting, had deprived TSG of the cash it needed to fund future Qualifying Pictures. But for this lack of liquidity, TSG would have fully invested in additional Fox films and reaped the full financial benefits associated with maximizing its investments in these Qualified Pictures.”

It took most folk YEARS longer to realize what you are than they should have, but we're pretty much all on the same page now and your goodwill is gone.

Pay your people Disney.

Rotten Tomatoes site is still "broke" for the Echo page.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/echo

73% all critics; 67% top critics; 63% average audience score.

It's been stuck there since the day Echo released. You can't click on "Verified Audience" because that button doesn't even exist. There is no count for the amount of critics or audience that voted for it. You can't even click on critic reviews to see what they actually wrote about the show.

RT not even pretending to be a legitimate review site in 2024 anymore.

There's zero chance in hell this gets picked up for a 2nd season. Marvel is basically dead at this point.

My guess is that Deadpool 3 doesn't even do well this year, even with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Bruce found some money under the international couch cushions for Disney. The Creator goes up more than $5 Million from last update meaning that it did break $100 Million worldwide. Still a huge loser on an $80 Million budget.

Disney's losses for 2023 managed to dip under $1.8 Billion now.

TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.5x RoT]: -$1,785,717,204
TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.0x RoT]: -$732,217,204

Almost zero chance it dips under $1.7 Billion, but there's always hope, right?

Hollywood’s Death Spiral
The secret numbers tell the story.

By Edward Jay Epstein | July 25, 2005, 2:48 PM

The real issue that emerges in these secret industry numbers is not the rise of a new format. Just as the DVD replaced VHS, a more efficient digital format will eventually replace the DVD. (A high-definition digital recorder with massive storage is already available in the United States and Japan.) What has inexorably changed is the location of the studios’ crucial audience. In 1948, with studios earning all their revenues from the box office, that audience was moviegoers. Even as late as 1980, when the audience had television sets and video players, studios still earned 55 percent of their money from people who actually went to movie theaters. In 2005, however, those moviegoers provided the studios with less than 15 percent of their worldwide revenues, while couch potatoes provided it with 85.8 percent. (Click here to see the numbers behind the rise of the home entertainment economy.)

This change in audience location altered the balance of power inside the studios. It reduced the once-almighty movie distribution arms to minor players while awarding star status to the home entertainment divisions that produced well over three times as much revenue. Through this reversal of fortunes, the stage has been set for what a top studio executive warned could be “Hollywood’s death spiral.”

How could it be profitable?

If it were Universal's Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1,363,250,724 Worldwide Gross vs. $100,000,00 Production Budget / 1,363% of the budget).

...or if it were Sony's Miles Morales 2 ($682,624,639 Worldwide Gross vs. $100,000,000 Production Budget / 683% of the budget).

...or if it were Paramount's Paw Patrol II ($199,905,028 Worldwide Gross vs. $30,000,000 Production Budget / 666% of the budget).

...or if it were Warner Bros.'s Mummies ($52,800,831 Worldwide Gross vs. $12,000,000 Production Budget / 440% of the budget).

... or if it were Universal's Migration (Currently $192,040,800 Worldwide Gross vs. $72,000,000 Production Budget with more gas left in the tank / 267% of the budget).

...or if it were Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ($180,351,905 Worldwide Gross vs. $70,000,000 Production Budget / 258% of the budget).

No.

If only Disney could make a movie that didn't cost $200 Million or more to make and wasn't stuffed to the gills with unpopular DEI agendas that nobody is willing to pay for anymore.

All of those studios made all of those cartoon movies listed above profitable. Some of them made a killing too. Even Seth Rogan's piece of shit Ninja Turtles movie that race swapped April O'Neil into an ugly, nerdy black chick made a few million bucks thanks to its comparatively low $70 Million price tag.

You can't force agendas AND blow the budget. That's the biggest takeaway for all the studios that lost money in 2023, but especially for Disney.

Nobody is watching any of Disney's shit for free either, and Disney+ will continue to lose over a Billion Dollars per year until it ultimately shuts down.

6ix, why waste more time writing about movies when there are more significant topics?

For example, compare the economic impact of Coffee to Movies. I picked Coffee because I don't drink it and Movies because those are free if you don't count the cost of time wasted on worthless activity. Did you know that:

¦ The total economic impact of the coffee industry in the United States in 2022 was $343.2 billion, a 52.4% increase from 2015.

¦ Consumers spent nearly $110 billion on coffee in 2022.

¦ "The coffee industry is responsible for more than 2.2 million U.S, jobs and generates more than $100 billion in wages.

The NCA U.S. Coffee Impact Report
Not only does coffee power your day, but it also helps power the US economy.
https://www.ncausa.org/Research-Trends/Economic-Impact

Coffee is twice as important as movies and coffee is a vile drink for people who need a drug to keep them awake. I suspect 6ixStringJack drinks coffee frequently, a hundred times or more often than he goes to the movie theater.

Because this is the Cinema board. Not the Coffee board.

Plus I find endless amusement watching the resident fff.net Communist go to bat for Disney everyday.

I'll take your complete deflection of the topic THAT YOU BROUGHT UP as another concession that you've just gotten your ass whooped by me again. It happens nearly every day in the RWED, and you chose to bring it in here.

Go play with Ted. He's the only person left here that's stupider than you are.

And the Trumptards act as if Hollywood losing money is a sure portent of Trump's eventual victory. It is a sign that Hollywood, a minor business compared to selling hot coffee, sells crap. Hollywood has always sold worthless crap to morons and its managers have always been bad at managing. That is why many movie studios have gone out of business in the past and more will in the future. That's even why Joss Whedon of Firefly fame is on hiatus. He was a terrible manager around employees. That is why Harvey Weinstein is in prison. Quentin Tarantino knows it is time for Hollywood to go out of business:

Tarantino has stated that he plans to make a total of just ten films before retiring as a director, as a means of ensuring an overall high quality (who is he kidding about quality? His movies are crap, although better than the competition.) within his filmography. He believes "most directors have horrible last movies," that ending on a "decent movie is rare," and that ending on a "good movie is kind of phenomenal."

You're projecting. I don't think about Trump every day. You do. If I weren't in the RWED, and didn't see you and Ted posting about him half a dozen times everyday, I could go weeks without having a single thought about Trump.

I've never seen Sound of Freedom. Angel Studios has never made a dime off of me, either in supportive contributions, ticket sales or even online purchases.

I've never once said that the success of Sound of Freedom had anything to do with Trump's successes or failures. You must have read some Lefty shit site articles saying that this was the case and mistakenly attributed that to me.

Quote:

Once again. Nothing to do with Trump. Trump isn't the vaccine. Trump support is a symptom of the people rejecting the DEI agenda that has poisoned everything from comic books to movies to schools to news agencies to business. If Democrats hadn't done what they did and continued doubling down on it every year, Trump wouldn't have ever become President and he wouldn't even be in the race right now.

There may not be any need for him in a few years. The free money has finally run out and all of these people are being fired. Many of the corporations who have been pushing this crap have had massive layoffs or even shuttered their doors completely.

And more importantly, outside of Hollywood, globalism seems to be dying. The WEF is a fuckin' joke in 2024. Even Joe Biden* is pissing off the Twitter leftwing nutjobs by talking about securing the border again.

Hollywood just happens to be a great barometer of which way the winds are blowing here.

In 2023, companies like Universal gave the audiences what they wanted and profited greatly from it, and companies like Disney did not. We will see what lessons were learned in 2024.

Sure. Hollywood always made worthless crap. Hollywood has also made a lot of great stuff too. Businesses in every sector go out of business every year. This is not specific to Hollywood, nor has it ever been.

For over a decade now though, they have felt like they were invincible. Invulnerable to criticism of their cynical pandering, with the full force of the media behind them. And it didn't matter how much money they were losing because there was always more.

Those days are over now.

And the irony is that it was Joe Biden* and the Democrats we have to thank for that.

Look at what Universal makes, sorted in order of how much money, adjusted for inflation:

1 Jurassic World
2 The Super Mario Bros. Movie
3 The Lost World: Jurassic Park
4 How the Grinch Stole Christmas
5 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
6 Despicable Me 2
7 Meet the Fockers
8 The Secret Life of Pets
9 Furious 7
10 Bruce Almighty
11 Minions
12 Apollo 13
13 Liar Liar
14 Jurassic World: Dominion
15 The Mummy Returns

https://www.the-numbers.com/market/distributor/Universal

Except for Apollo 13, #12 on the list, it is all a bunch of meaningless crap. If Hollywood never made another movie, we'd be better for its death. What about Hollywood's employees? They can sell coffee, another worthless industry providing a similar addiction that we'd be better off if it had never been discovered by drugged goats in Ethiopia, around 800 AD.

One man's crap is another man's treasure. People like to be entertained and not preached to when paying to see a movie.

Yeah dude. We know this is your line now.

Just burn everything down because it's not doing what you want it to do. "Oh yeah. Fuck movies. Fuck Hollywood. I never cared about them anyway."

But we have your post history here. When I was talking about Disney putting out woke trash Lightyear a few years back and correctly predicting it was going to fail, you didn't say that Hollywood should die then. You attacked me and said that Disney didn't make movies for me.

The difference between you and me on this matter is that I actually don't watch movies or TV except for the rare occasion I'm watching one with my dad or my brother. If Hollywood actually did die, it wouldn't affect my life at all. I don't know what you'd do with your free time if you weren't able to pirate all of those movies though. Probably just post even more dumb shit on this website.

It's impossible to ever have any real discussions with you because all you ever want to do is get into arguments that you never win and you constantly move the goalposts because you have no ideological core and you spend all day, every day contradicting your own arguments. We've seen you do this with posts you put in 2 different threads in the RWED only 5 minutes apart from each other.

You're a fuckin' goofball.

The second biggest question is has Disney tarnished their brand so badly that they will have their first Toy Story flop.

Fast Forward to 2024 and now it's not just idiot Laura Ingraham saying it. Leftist cesspool Axios is in agreement.

There is no longer a special Ready Creek tax district for Disney.

No it's not. It's pissing off the people who used to pay to see Disney.

Look at their stock prices.

Democrats and Leftists are done, buddy. Expect the new Bob to be fired from his position at Disney and a huge change in the corporate structure to occur over the next year. Disney is tired of losing money, pandering to a woke Titter mob that doesn't bring them any cash.

I didn't bother reading the rest of your bullshit, as per usual.

We'll see the box office results of this woke dumpster fire and I'll give you my I Told You Sos then.

You've accumulated quite a collection of them so far, haven't you?

Seems I was right again. Imagine that, huh?

The new Bob WAS fired.

Lightyear bombed big time.

San Francisco Chronicle: Disney’s Pixar to undergo significant layoffs later this year

432.php
