Probably going to be a contest between
Disney/Marvel

and

WarnerBros/DC

for the worst flops

What is doing ok
companies

The new Spider-Man which is both Marvel and Sony,
the new 'Avatar' Lightstorm TSG Entertainment 20th Century Studios
Minions Despicable Me franchise Universal Studios
Puss in Boots Dreamworks
A Quiet Place Part something
Top Gun Paramount Pictures Jerry Bruckheimer Films Skydance
video Game movies like The Super Mario Bros Movie
Oppenheimer
'Barbie' which was Warner Bros

Movie loss for 'The Flash' and 'Black Adam' might be some of the largest flops of all time easily losing more than 100 Million, 'Strange World' by Disney is said to have lost 200 Million, The Matrix Resurrections owned by Warner Bros lost 130 Million, Suicide Squad Warner Bros DC Lost 120 Million

indie films with small budgets are making the most money, Hollyweird culture is out of touch and forcing political messages in expensive movies that flop.

Don't forget Indy 5 which has lost $230M to $380M for Disney. That's the king loser of all time right now.

Or the fact that we haven't seen a Star Wars movie in 4 whole years because they're terrified to even make another one.

Sub-threads for notable movies can be found here:

The Little Mermaid Failure Thread: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=65598

The Elemental Failure Thread: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=65628

The Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Failure Thread: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=65629

NOTE 1: I have decided to add the 2.5x Rule of Thumb and mark the existing numbers as the 2.0x Rule of Thumb that has been suggested by Variety magazine when discussing how much money Disney is losing on movies. The truth lies somewhere in the middle of both figures.

However, I will still keep any movie that grossed more than 2 times the Production Budget in the Winners category for now.

For more information on this, look earlier in the thread.

NOTE 2: For clarity and to lessen bloat, I'm going to remove any comments I've made about weird international numbers fluctuating. You're going to see weird things happen here, like movies making a lot of money one week despite almost making nothing in the domestic box office, and other weeks where they lose money with no explanation. This just seems par for the course with international numbers, and I don't feel like cataloging it anymore.

I've made a note to verify all final numbers here a few months after Disney's last 2023 movies exit the theaters in 2024 to make sure they're still accurate since movies that have been out of theaters for weeks still seem to lose and gain some money after the fact.

It would be impossible to gauge how much money they lose on streaming on a show-to-show basis, but it appears I can tell you how much money the shows cost to produce and how poorly they are received.

NOTES ON STREAMING (07/19/2023): It has been reported that the 6 episodes of Secret Invasion cost $212 Million to make, or $35.3 Million per episode. That's quite expensive considering that almost every scene is just 2 or 3 characters sitting inside a room talking to each other.

It has also been reported that Disney will lose another $800,000,000+ this quarter on Disney+. This brings the entire loss on their streaming service to over $4 Billion since it was launched.

NOTES ON STREAMING (07/31/2023): The 6th and final episode of Secret Invasion is now officially the lowest rated critics score for any Marvel TV Show property in history at only 7%, with one critic writing "A huge miscalculation in emphasizing brawn over brain, this finale is so misjudged that most MCU fans will want to keep it secret from their collective memory."

• Disney gross profit for the quarter ending June 30, 2023 was $7.859B, a 0.47% increase year-over-year.

• Disney gross profit for the twelve months ending June 30, 2023 was $28.776B, a 3.06% increase year-over-year.

• Disney annual gross profit for 2022 was $28.321 B, a 27.07% increase from 2021.

• Disney annual gross profit for 2021 was $22.287B, a 3.62% increase from 2020.

6ix, while you concentrate on "Losses" making movies, you missed the bigger picture.

And "Losses" for movies are unlike losses for airlines that spend billions on fuel and loans for airplanes, you know, externalities. Disney spends billions on one part of Disney paying a different part of Disney for office space and props used to make movies.

NOTE 2: To not completely ignore international changes from week to week, I've simplified the explanation of +/- money any movie makes whether it's still in theaters or not for each entry. Just one single line now. We all know that the international numbers fluctuate quite a bit and become extremely noticeable once a movie has neared the end of its run and several weeks afterward, so I won't go into detail below every movie when it happens.

Bruce still has "Untitled Disney Movie" listed on December 1st as well, but it appears that it might have just been a placeholder for a movie called "The Bikeriders" which is being released by 20th Century Studios (Which does now appear on the Release Schedule along side it).

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/jeff-nichols-drama-bikeriders-set-
164723037.html

It's got Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy and Norman Reedus in it.

No production budget info available now, but if the main actors didn't hold out for a ton of money it should be somewhat reasonable. It's a period piece in the 60's, and I don't imagine it's going to have any CGI effects in it.

It could actually be good, given the cast.

A Haunting in Venice comes out on September 15th. That one's got a $70 Million budget.

It stars Kenneth Branaugh and Michelle Yeoh.

Quote:

In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a seance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer.

Sounds like both of these are more like movies they used to make before everything went Superhero and woke trash. As much as I hate modern Disney, if these aren't woke garbage I hope they do good.

That's quite expensive considering that almost every scene is just 2 or 3 characters sitting inside a room talking to each other.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2023/07/08/disney-shells-out
-212-million-on-secret-invasion
/

It has also been reported that Disney will lose another $800,000,000+ this quarter on Disney+. This brings the entire loss on their streaming service to over $4 Billion since it was launched.

NOTES ON STREAMING (07/31/2023): The 6th and final episode of Secret Invasion is now officially the lowest rated critics score for any Marvel TV Show property in history at only 7%, with one critic writing "A huge miscalculation in emphasizing brawn over brain, this finale is so misjudged that most MCU fans will want to keep it secret from their collective memory."

Way to spend $212 Million, Disney.

Idiot Second used to defend Disney and has said that Disney goes up and down with the S&P 500.

Disney stock dipped below $80 a share today before settling at $80.57.

Let's see what the S&P looks like.... Hmmmmmm... $4,451.14

March 12, 2021:
- Disney peaks at $197.16 per share.
- S&P 500 sits at $3,943.34.

September 7th, 2023:
- Disney ends the day it dipped below $80 at $80.57 per share.
- S&P 500 is $4,451.14.

Disney's loss in that time: $116.59 per share or -59.13%
S&P 500's gain in that time: $507.80 or +12.88%

Disney hasn't been this low since March 1st of 2014 when it was $80.41 per share, which was the highest it had ever been at that point after a 12 year consistent rise in price after the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s.

Bob Iger is getting sued now a 2nd time for defrauding investors and lying about Disney+ results after it was revealed they lost another $800 Million in streaming last quarter.

Theme Park attendance has never been lower.

Disney might go bankrupt if it is forced to buy Hulu.

Disney has lost over $775 Million in the Box Office so far in 2023.

Toys for 8 year old movies still rot on shelves, even at discount stores like Ollie's because nobody wants to buy their diversity hire woke crap that the since fired DEI team of college educated morons insisted get made only to eventually find their way into a landfill whenever Ollie's decides it wants the shelf space back and cuts its losses. At least Ollie's will get a tax writeoff for that terrible mistake.

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/two

Hollywood’s Slo-Mo Self-Sabotage

The industry’s pursuit of I.P. at the expense of originality has all but trained younger audiences not to expect novelty or surprise at the multiplex, assuming that they’re going to the theater at all. Hollywood has never been known for overestimating the audience’s intelligence, but it’s hard not to wonder how it is supposed to be inculcating a love of cinema in children—that is, future moviegoers—when the splashiest films on offer are explicitly buckets of regurgitation. Early summer gave us the live-action “Little Mermaid,” the latest in Disney’s cannibalization of its archives. The animated film was one of the first movies that I remember seeing, and it really did feel magical. Even then, Ariel’s coming of age was criticized in some circles for making its heroine a boy-crazy shopaholic, but the fact that millennials continue to lovingly mock it years later attests to its endurance as a classic. The 1989 film swelled with passion and longing, transported us to unseen worlds, and left us with indelible characters and glorious earworms. It convinced girls that it was O.K. to want more (even if it was more thingamabobs). There’s a measure of progress, to be sure, in recasting Ariel as a Black mermaid played by Halle Bailey, but the mixed reviews all but confirm that it’s a dead-eyed knockoff of the original. It’s true that early impressions can forge a childhood attachment to almost anything, but the way that kids grow to love movies as adults is by offering them, well, great films and relevant themes, instead of a parade of listless remakes with stories that were meant to speak to a generation three decades ago.

Perhaps we should have seen the breakdown of the star-making machine as a preview of things to come. Screen celebrity is nearly as old as the movie industry itself, but the device seems to have stopped minting household names sometime in the past twenty years. The movie stars of yesteryear are still the movie stars of today. A study by the National Research Group, a market-research firm that specializes in entertainment, life style, and technology, found that, of the twenty actors most likely to pull audiences to a theater, only one was under the age of forty (Chris Hemsworth), and the average age of that group was fifty-eight. (The sexagenarian Tom Cruise topped the list.) In lieu of finding and launching the next Denzel Washington or Julia Roberts, studios have poured millions into digitally de-aging graying A-listers. Hollywood stardom is becoming something unthinkable in any other era of its existence: a gerontocracy.

I.P. is again to blame. Franchises killed the movie star. Spider-Man can be played by Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland, Batman by Michael Keaton or Christian Bale or Ben Affleck or Robert Pattinson or Michael Keaton again. An industry famous for worshipping youth is more clueless than ever about what to do with its young people. (What’s “a Tom Holland movie”? Who can say?) And, for those emerging actors who used to see background work as an entry point to a notoriously gate-kept industry, it turns out the studios might prefer to digitally scan their likeness instead, possibly locking them out of opportunities for more days on set.

After “Top Gun: Maverick” broke box-office records, sequels may have been seen as the key to luring audiences back to theatres, which have been languishing since the pandemic. But this summer’s long-in-the-tooth franchises—“Mission: Impossible,” “Transformers,” “Indiana Jones,” and “The Fast and the Furious”—have performed just satisfactorily, if not disappointingly. “Barbie,” meanwhile, saw the director Greta Gerwig infuse the half-century-old blond blank slate with her own idiosyncratic anxieties to produce a Zeitgeist-capturing film with an unmistakable authorial imprimatur. But Hollywood’s ignoring the obvious takeaway, which is that viewers appreciate novelty. Instead, Mattel has announced that it will follow up “Barbie” by raiding its toy closet for more I.P., and has put dozens of projects based on its products into development.

Even the strike’s prolongation suggests an inane shortsightedness. Film and television are already losing the competition for eyeballs to video games and the Internet. The Bloomberg journalist Lucas Shaw has reported that “people spend more time (and money) on video games than they do on movies, and they spend more time watching YouTube than any other TV network.” The lack of new scripted programming on the broadcast networks as a result of the strikes is forecast to hasten their coming obsolescence. The momentum from the successes of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in bringing audiences back to theaters has been squandered by the pushing back of many of this year’s releases to 2024. But, the longer the studios stretch out the strike, the more likely it is that consumers will form new leisure habits on TikTok or Animal Crossing.

Yup. It's been a slo-mo ride for sure. But it's been going on a LOT longer than The New Yorker has noticed. There have been people trying to warn Hollywood of this, but it's fallen on deaf ears until 2023. TNY is coming out and saying this now, but when it brings up very valid points in the article about how no new movie stars are being created today, it's inadvertintely admitting that this has been an ongoing problem lasting decades, with Chris Hemsworth being the "only under-40 name in the 20 actors that would pull audiences to a theater" study.

While they still appear to be applauding woke ideology here, it does warm the heart to know that even a magazine like The New Yorker is finally addressing the serious problems with lazy and uninspired "cannibalism" of old properties as a cash grab instead of just mindlessly proclaiming what a great film The Little Mermaid was because of how stunning and brave their casting choice was.

Baby steps.

I'm a man myself. One that is very capable of using tools, remodeling houses, fixing cars and doing all sorts of laborious tasks. I didn't grow up with any sisters. Arguably, the 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid was not made for me at all. But I'll tell you what... I must have seen that movie a dozen times with my brothers when we were kids. We loved Disney movies growing up. My old man rented a ton of old Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons and animated features for us at the library, and even got a 2nd VCR at one point to record the ones we wanted to watch again.

I was in High School when The Lion King came out. Back then there really was no such thing as cartoons for adults like we've got all over the place right now (unless you were into Anime). By all rights, I shouldn't have loved that movie as a 16 year old. But I did. I probably saw that movie a dozen times as well.

I wasn't "represented" in either of them. I'm not a woman. I'm not a mermaid. I'm not a lion. But the writing, animation and acting was so good that the audience made real connections to these characters. This is an art that has been completely lost in the last two decades, when the only two things Hollywood cares about anymore are making the most money in the laziest way possible and inserting their agenda into everything they can even when it doesn't fit there at all.

They're following the Music industry here. Classic rock from the 60's and 70's still endure today. Even though a bit more niche, 80's still have a lot of fans... mostly due to how experimental everything was. The 90's has "grunge" and rap rockstars that are still household names to this day.

How many acts from the 2000's to today do you REALLY remember though? Even the ones who had some admittedly really catchy earworms? Probably a lot less than you think you remember. Music started dying first. Hollywood followed in its place.

I.P.s aren't to blame. Hollywood laziness AND (until recently) audiences repeatedly coming out in droves to support Hollywood laziness is to blame. If being lazy doesn't work anymore, they're going to have to stop being lazy or die.

I.P.s are just a symptom of the problem and/or a creation tool of the real problem.

Fast X actually did fine. If it didn't have an insane $340 Million budget, it would have been a winner. The same could be said about MI7 with its $290 Million budget. Even Indy 5 with all of its hatred for the original trilogy, its fan base and its titular star could have made money if it was made with only $100 Million instead of it's $300 Million budget. The budgets need to be taken into account here.

And yeah... Hollywood missed the point of the Barbie phenomena completely.

If they think they're going to get a repeat of Barbie when they drop a Polly Pocket or Hot Wheels movie in 2025, they've got another thing coming. I look very much forward to watching it flop if they go down that path.

And boy, was Warner Bros. lucky to have such a hit with Barbie in 2023. Even with that stunning box office win, they've barely cobbled together $500 Million at the box office with all of their other failures.

Universal should probably be looked at as the real model to follow in 2023. It's made over $1.3 Billion at the worldwide Box Office in 2023 even using the 2.5x Rule of Thumb so far. While it did make the huge misstep of putting out Renfield with an $87 Million production budget (the worst performance of a movie in the top 100 in 2023), It's also responsible for M3GAN, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer, to name a few.

Their only big mistake this year was Renfield, which actually was a pretty entertaining movie. It just shouldn't have cost anywhere near what it did to make. But that being said, if you're going to have a flop, have a flop that cost less than $100 Million to make and it's not going to hurt your bottom line all that much when you've been putting out some real bangers all year. Particularly when you're the studio responsible for putting out the first truly successful video game adaptation in 3 decades of Hollywood failing to figure out how to successfully do so.

Quote:

Yup. They've killed late-night TV already. They'll be lucky if they could ever get half of their audience back after the four month (so far) hiatus keeps being dragged out. People are creatures of patterns and habit. Some of that audience has made better habits like getting more sleep at night instead of letting the late-night hosts fill their mind with trash. Some of them have found other habits to fill that time that aren't as healthy and just more of a lateral move to something else just as mindless. Very few will come back to it when they try to put all of those guys on air again because most of them have realized by now how much happier they are in their day-to-day lives without going to sleep with all that shit being pumped into their brains.

It's said that it takes about 2 to 3 months to form a lasting habit. There hasn't been any late night talk shows since May 2nd. This writer's strike obliterated the late night habit for most of its prior viewer-base for good. They've already moved on to something else and they aren't likely to come back any time soon.

Hollywood has been slowly killing movie theater ticket sales for twenty years.
Death might be closer than Hollywood cares to know:

July 25, 2005 Hollywood’s Death Spiral
The secret numbers tell the story.

In 1948, with studios earning all their revenues from the box office, that audience was moviegoers. Even as late as 1980, when the audience had television sets and video players, studios still earned 55 percent of their money from people who actually went to movie theaters. In 2005, however, those moviegoers provided the studios with less than 15 percent of their worldwide revenues, while couch potatoes provided it with 85.8 percent.

https://slate.com/culture/2005/07/hollywood-s-death-spiral.html

Aug 01, 2005 Hollywood’s Death Spiral, Part 2
Are movie theaters facing extinction?

The $64 billion question in Hollywood these days is what to do about collapsing the boundary between a movie’s theatrical and video release—the so-called video window. Gradually, this window has shrunk from six months to four months—and, in the case of many children’s movies—to three months. Even worse, DVD releases are often announced while a movie is still playing in the multiplexes. As a result, more moviegoers now wait to buy or rent a movie on DVD, which leads to shorter theatrical runs and a fall in worldwide theater attendance, which in turn puts more pressure on the studios to shorten the window even further.

This death spiral was set in motion by the studios themselves about four years ago. The decision to shorten the video window did not proceed from a new technological development—such as TV in the 1940s or the video cassette in the 1970s—or a change in popular taste. As a top studio executive explained to me, “It was a voluntary decision made for purely financial reasons by the major players. It was done to satisfy quarterly profit goals, nothing more, nothing less.” In short, the studios changed their business model so that they could opportunistically sell DVDs, which, after all, are a conventional retail product like soap or toys.

The most radical proposal is to eliminate the windowing system entirely. In this scenario, the studios would simultaneously release a title in theaters, video stores, and on pay-per-view, and the title would require only a single marketing campaign. The audience could then choose which format best fits its wallet and clock. Proponents of this plan envision that it will shift some part of the theater audience to either DVD (which has higher profit margins than theatrical distribution) or pay-per-view (which has higher profit margins than DVD). Even so, they hold that movie theaters will retain a core audience, since there will always be people who prefer the theater experience or who just want to get out of the house.

I still don't know what your point is, even with that underlined.

Show me one streaming service that has ever been profitable. Including Netflix.

Disney+ certainly has never earned a profit.

And the worst part about it for them, is that the streaming model that we have today has also killed their network and cable TV revenue. In the race to be the best digital service, they destroyed the market of the couch potato.

And when Disney is losing on every other front that used to be cornerstones for them like their parks and merchandising on top of it, that's why Disney stock is now in the low $80s with talks of impending bankruptcies by the actual legacy media.

And this is 2023. Not 2005. Nobody buys that shit anymore either.

I pointed this out just yesterday in the Hollywood thread. Equalizer sold around $45 Million worth of BluRay and DVD. Equalizer 2 did half of that. Equalizer 3 will be lucky if it sells $2 Million worth of it.

It's all about streaming now.

And they haven't figured out a way to make streaming profitable.

And with over a decade of commercial-free streaming services, they're pissing off their customer base by constant price hikes and making people who don't want to pay them sit through commercials, essentially making streaming services nothing more than Cable TV again.

And as I mentioned in my previous post, Universal has managed to gross over $1.3 BILLION in the 2023 Box Office so far after taking 2 and 1/2 times the budget into account.

Disney meanwhile has lost nearly $800 Million this year. And even with Barbie's success, Warner Bros has only made half a billion.

Don't discount these numbers because you're an idiot if you do.

Disney+ certainly has never earned a profit.

Two ideas that you need to grasp:

1) Revenues are not the same as profits. Disney can pull in revenue from streaming that is several times larger than movie theater ticket sales and still not make a "profit".

2) The ONLY number you know on a daily basis, 6ix, is movie ticket sales. Disney does not let you know what its revenue is from streaming the same movie. The studios found new ways to cheat actors out of their pay, now that there are new ways to make money beyond ticket sales. That is also why the cost of making a movie has ballooned into the hundreds of millions; it is a new way to cheat by lowering the apparent profitability of a movie. If the movie is not "profitable" the movie stars are not paid a cut of the "profits" which leaves more money for the head of the studio. It is a corrupt industrial practice. According to Lucasfilm, Return of the Jedi (1983), despite having earned $475 million at the box office against a budget of $32.5 million, "has never gone into profit".[7] 6ix, you debunked nothing. You understand nothing about how corrupt Hollywood has always been.

I find it rather amusing that when the media cycle doesn't have anything negative to say about Trump and there's no interesting Ukraine updates out there, you can find our resident Socialist Second in the Cinema threads simping for the big companies.

It's one thing to lie about your numbers to the IRS if you're Disney. It's quite another to be caught several times now lying about them to your shareholders.

The TRUTH of the matter is, Universal is 2023's biggest winner, and Disney is 2023's biggest loser.

And if WB didn't luck out with Barbie, it would have been in a race to the bottom with Disney.

And as far as "revenue" is concerned, there IS NO REVENUE for Disney anymore. Streaming wasn't only a dead-end for them, but it was a costly mistake since they lost all of that REVENUE they had by licensing out their big properties to other streaming services like Netflix. It also had the very unfortunate side-effect of killing its cable network channel in 2023. Nobody is buying Disney toys anymore. Nobody is going to Disney parks anymore. Hell... they're shutting down their entire India operation just to stay afloat.

You'd have an argument here about Hollywood Accounting if it were any year other than 2023. But as a company the size of Disney, you can't lose every game you're playing at the same time and pretend to anybody you're still doing alright.

So I read the article from Slashfilm that was cited in wikipedia:

https://www.slashfilm.com/1373331/oppenheimer-florence-pugh-career-fir
st-experience
/

Quote:

Gross profit is what you get if you are a big enough actor or producer to demand this. You get a percentage of profit based on the gross of the film – how much it makes before any costs. Therefore, you are guaranteed to get paid since the studio can't hide anything. Very few people can demand gross points. But if you have them and your film hits big, you make millions. In fact, this can be so profitable you will sometimes see big stars forgo any salary at all except union minimum just to get these points.Unfortunately, Mr. Prowse relates what is almost universally the case with a net profit clause. Studios almost never pay on this clause, as they claim nearly any and every expense possible to keep the film from showing any actual profit. Very few films have ever shown a net profit on the books. How do they do this? Well first, imagine that George Lucas decided to go to New York tomorrow to talk about showing Return of the Jedi in 3D. And he stayed at the Ritz Carlton, ordered sushi at 3 a.m. from room service and used the hotel phone to call Bahrain to make prank calls.Well, 26 years after the release of the film, the accountants at Lucasfilm are going to charge $86,000 to the costs of Return of the Jedi. I am NOT joking. This is what they do. If George Lucas utters the words Star Wars and he's spending money, they're putting it on the red line for one of those films. On the flipside, Mr. Prowse would be wise to use the FORCE, aka a lawyer, to get Lucasfilm to cough up. You see, as you can tell by the above, the accounting is utter bullshit. And on a film like Return of the Jedi, Lucasfilm would be extremely reluctant to open its books in open court. Extremely reluctant because of how incredibly embarrassed studios have been in the past when they have made the mistake of doing this. Plus, the ensuing publicity would be embarrassing to Lucasfilm. Can you imagine the hedlines if Darth Vader sued George Lucas? In short, if you have net participation on a film that has grossed hundreds of millions, you may get some dough, but you'll have to sue to get it.

Of course.

This isn't any different than record contracts that are so bad that the only way the bands actually make any money is by selling merch at concerts. Concerts that they're also not getting paid any money to perform otherwise, on top of the next-to-nothing they got paid for making their first 2 or 3 albums. You only get to demand better terms when you hit Taylor Swift levels of popularity and you've been in the business long enough to know better.

Christ... Prince had to change his name to a fucking hieroglyph there for a while until he won the right to use his name back in court.

Yeah... They're fuckin' dirtbags for doing this. But they know they can get away with it because the politicians and judges are paid off to let them get away with it. They also know they hold all the power and any new actors or music groups that finally get their "big break" are so desperate to finally make it that they'll sign literally anything thrown in front of them because they know that if they don't there are 1,000 other people who are lined up right behind them to sign that contract.

Why do you think a scumbag like Harvey Weinstein got to have sex with some of the hottest women on the planet? His great personality? Or perhaps it was that cratered face that resembles the surface of Mars? Yeah. I bet that was it.

This still is not an argument for what Disney is going through right now.

1. Even if Disney has ballooned the hell out of their budgets, they're so far in the red that cutting those budgets down to half of what they were on the books still makes no money and still likely loses them money in 2023.

2. It stands to reason that EVERY one of the big stuidos is doing this, and yet Universal has still managed to put up over $1.3 BILLION+ in gross Box Office profits in 2023.

3. Accounting like this, used to screw unwitting actors, writers and other employees who signed stupid contracts is GOOD BUSINESS for the bottom line and for the shareholders when the exact opposite is reflected in Disney's current $81 per share, meaning that either everyone is aware they're lying about this in 2023 and/or Disney is hurting in so many other places where it used to do well that the company is dying.

At the end of the day the IRS knows what they made and didn't make.

And if the above sentence is not true, might I suggest that some of those 87,000 new IRS agents that taxpayers are funding to go after people making less than $30k per year set their sites on Hollywood instead perhaps?

The IRS does not know. The only limitation on how much cheating a public corporation does is the dishonesty of the board of directors.

For someone who does NOT have a board of directors, Roy Cohn for example, Trump's mentor. Roy never paid income tax and the IRS could do nothing to him. Roy would simply refuse to cooperate, and file a stalling motion in court, and the IRS was stymied. We only know now because Roy is dead. Trump probably has pulled the exact same stunt. We won't know for sure until after he is dead and a new set of lawyers and accountants, ones not selected for dishonesty by Trump to close his estate, take over. It is very hard to cheat when dead. While alive, Trump's income is whatever he says it is, which is why Donald Trump 'paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017'.

March 12, 2021:
- Disney peaks at $197.16 per share.
- S&P 500 sits at $3,943.34.

September 7th, 2023:
- Disney ends the day it dipped below $80 at $80.57 per share.
- S&P 500 is $4,451.14.

Disney's loss in that time: $116.59 per share or -40.87%
S&P 500's gain in that time: $507.80 or +12.88%

Math seems off.
Methinks 116.59 / 197.16 would be closer to a 59.13% loss. Or -59.13%
Using S&P500 as benchmark, control group, the potential of Disney would have been about $222. So the loss is actually equivalent to $141.

I've made a note to verify all final numbers here a few months after Disney's last 2023 movies exit the theaters in 2024 to make sure they're still accurate since movies that have been out of theaters for weeks still seem to lose and gain some money after the fact.

[CANCELLED]

It would be impossible to gauge how much money they lose on streaming on a show-to-show basis, but it appears I can tell you how much money the shows cost to produce and how poorly they are received.

NOTES ON STREAMING (07/19/2023): It has been reported that the 6 episodes of Secret Invasion cost $212 Million to make, or $35.3 Million per episode. That's quite expensive considering that almost every scene is just 2 or 3 characters sitting inside a room talking to each other.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2023/07/08/disney-shells-out
-212-million-on-secret-invasion

Update 09/11:

TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.0x RoT]: -$66,737,423
TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.5x RoT]: -$767,237,423

Disney still has 5 films in theaters right now, and they're all at the end of their run. Because of this, with international numbers always in fluctuation (JSF says that Bruce has said that this is due to ever-changing currency conversions), Disney actually lost -$1,793.040 since Labor Day, with Elemental losing over $2 Million over these last 6 days alone.

The only other interesting thing to note this week is that Haunted Mansion is up only around $800k from last week, which is 1/10th of what it made the previous week. Granted, last week's numbers DID included Labor Day for an 8 day span and the extra money that is guaranteed on a holiday weekend regardless.

But any normal given Monday, it wasn't going to break $1 Million for the week anyhow, so this movie is just about done in theaters.

We won't get another big budget Disney film to track until The Marvels comes out on November 10th, and the only other one that is slated this year is Wish after that.

I've also decided that I will keep updating the Disney failure thread on a week to week basis since it doesn't have a lot of overlap with my new system of tracking all the Top Worldwide movies lists the way that I did the Disney lists. Plus, the Disney list is a lot easier to update anyhow.

I'll try to figure out the best way to show results of the other lists on FFF.net that I'll be updating with all the new numbers tonight.

I've made a note to verify all final numbers here a few months after Disney's last 2023 movies exit the theaters in 2024 to make sure they're still accurate since movies that have been out of theaters for weeks still seem to lose and gain some money after the fact.

It was actually a huge week for Disney here. After losing few million with international numbers for films that had completed their run last weekend, the Disney movies MADE a staggering $34,320,676 combined with international fluctuations this past 7 days (With only about $6 Million or so actual new box office receipts for Haunted Mansion and Theater Camp).

But then A Haunting in Venice came out and under-performed.

I've got to really look into tracking that movie and other things not SPECIFICALLY Disney to see if it's truly a loss for Disney or not. There was compelling evidence to not include Avatar 2 under the Disney umbrella last year, and maybe that's the case here as well.

A Haunting in Venice might do okay in the end and probably won't change the overall picture that much. Movies like Theater Camp didn't even though they were losers, and Boogeyman was a slight winner that doesn't move the needle much either.

The Little Mermaid loses $330k this week.
Elemental loses $2.3 Million.
Indiana Jones 5 loses $1.2 Million.
Theater Camp gains $73k.
Haunted Mansion gains $1.2 Million.
A Haunting in Venice gains $34.6 Million.

Even though it surprised everyone after its terrible opening weekend to hold on and gross over $480 Million, Elemental is still a likely loser for Disney/Pixar this year. Rule of thumb 2.5x says it needs to make $500 Million to break even, and after a surprise gain of over $7 Million last week, it just saw over $2 Million of that erased this week. That's how international numbers go post-domestic-box-office.

It probably gains that back before losing some. Who knows where it's going to end up, but it is very doubtful that it will hit $500 Million in the end. Even if marketing were cheap and it only needed $400 Million to break even with the old 2.0x Rule of Thumb, these just aren't good numbers for a company that was cranking out several Billion Dollar movies every year and rarely had a single huge loss, let alone going on half a dozen of them.

I've made a note to verify all final numbers here a few months after Disney's last 2023 movies exit the theaters in 2024 to make sure they're still accurate since movies that have been out of theaters for weeks still seem to lose and gain some money after the fact.

Disney now has lost over $1.3 BILLION in the theaters in 2023.

With The Marvels and Wish the only two movies left to make any money for Disney, can they claw back enough for them to lose under a Billion?

Add $200,000,000 to the deficit for the production budget of Wish (According to The Wrap) before you answer that question.

My old man pointed out to me the other day that The Creator is a 20th Century Fox release. I've just verified this and it's going to have to join the list. I don't know how I missed that one.

That will be another $80 Million on the production budget for Disney and only $99 Million WW Box Office (or a loss of around $100 Million).

This will bump Disney up to over $1.4 Billion in losses so far for 2023.

With Magazine Dreams being cancelled, I believe this is all of the movies Disney was in charge of for 2023 after these get added to the next update.

With the 3 movies to add from the last post, and the current $451 Million hole that Disney is in for Wish, Disney's got a temporary figure of being $2,019,969,298 in the hole at the Box Office in 2023.

Not really though. I haven't subtracted from that whatever The Marvels and Next Goal Wins since last weekend. It wasn't much, but I already know it was enough to bring it back below $2 BILLION in losses. The Marvels was only at $111M after the first weekend Worldwide and it's added $76 Million for a total of $187 Million now.

Still funny though. Even more so now that we know they're going to lose hundreds of millions on Wish too.

I think I heard that there are two more Searchlight flicks coming out this year that I hadn't accounted for too, so there's still hope. If they were only $10 Million projects like Next Goal Wins and Theater Camp, that won't move the needle, but if both of them end up being as pricey as Chevalier was, Disney could still possibly lose $2 BILLION in 2023 with how bad The Marvels and Wish are doing.

Maybe you are confused.

Disney WANTED to lose $2B in 2023. That is why they keep putting out Woke Mindvirus trash that nobody is foolish or gullible enough to see.

This is merely the price of being righteous. Or, at least, self-righteous.

I hope all of their investors go broke, after going along with it for so long.

Are there even any franchise brands that Disney hasn't destroyed yet?

They didn't destroy Songs of the South. They just threw it in a hole and censored it.

Maybe they can make Songs of the South 2 in 2025.

Quote:

After looking completely dominant when it posted a $3.74 billion year at the domestic box office in 2019, Disney has been the number 2 studio every year since. This weekend was their last chance to catch up with Universal, which will win the race in 2023. Finishing second is hardly a disaster in many ways, but it’s clear Disney has some significant rethinking to do across its business. Its success with Disney+ has clearly come at a cost to its theatrical business.

Catch up to Universal?

Disney spent far more than any other studio without even counting 20th Century Studios or FOX Searchlight. FAR MORE.

Disney is not in 2nd place. Disney is in dead last.

And even if we weren't counting the losses at all, Disney is something like $750 Million to $900 Million behind Universal in Worldwide Gross.

Are you trying to say that somehow Wish and The Marvels had a chance of grossing $750 to $900 Million this weekend in a parallel universe, Bruce?

NOTE 1: With most sites including Variety and Deadline calling films that grossed 2.0x of their budget failures, and most movies sites tracking the success or failure of a movie's ability to break even based off if it can gross 2.5x of its Production Budget, I have now made 2.5x the marker for whether a movie is a failure or not.

The 2.0x numbers will still be tallied for the rest of the year, but if I choose to track movies again next year I will only be keeping track of 2.5x.

That's quite expensive considering that almost every scene is just 2 or 3 characters sitting inside a room talking to each other.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2023/07/08/disney-shells-out
-212-million-on-secret-invasion

As of November 27th, 2023, Disney has lost $1.944 BILLION at the box office through it's Disney/Pixar/Marvel/20th Century Studios/FOX Searchlight Brands.

TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.5x RoT]: -$1,944,578,985
TOTAL NET GAIN/LOSS FOR DISNEY 2023 [2.0x RoT]: -$908,578,985

Even if we were still going with only 2 times the budget to break even, which not even the Lefty Disney shill sites are anymore, they've lost nearly a Billion at the box office in 2023.

And it wasn't presented by Doomcock and his "spies", so there might actually be some legitimacy to it this time.

Elon Musk: "Let's See How Earth Responds" To Advertisers Trying To Blackmail Twitter

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2023/11/30/elon_musk_lets_see_
how_earth_responds_to_advertisers_trying_to_blackmail_twitter.html

Quote:

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN, NY TIMES: Obviously you know that there's a public perception that -- and you are clarifying this now -- but there's a public perception that that was part of an apology tour, if you will. That this had been said online there was all of the criticism, there was advertisers leaving, we talked to Bob Iger today.

ELON MUSK: I hope they stop. Don't advertise.

SORKIN: You don't want them to advertise?

MUSK: No.

SORKIN: What do you mean?

MUSK: If somebody's going to try to blackmail me with advertising - blackmail me with money? Go fuck yourself.

SORKIN: But --

MUSK: Go. Fuck. Yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is. Hey, Bob, if you're in the audience.

SORKIN: Let me ask you then --

MUSK: That's how I feel. Don't advertise.

SORKIN: How do you think then about the economics of X, if part of the underlying model, at least today, maybe it needs to shift, maybe the answer is, it needs to shift away from advertising. if you believe that this is the one part of your business where you will be beholden to those who -- have this view --

MUSK: G. F. Y.

SORKIN: I understand that, but there's a reality, too. right? Linda Yaccarino [CEO of Twitter] is right here and she has to sell advertising.

MUSK: Absolutely, totally, look. Actually, what this advertising boycott is going to do is it's going to kill the company. And the whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company and we will document it in great detail.

SORKIN: But those advertisers, I imagine, they're going to say, we didn't kill the company.

MUSK: Oh, yeah. Tell it to Earth.

SORKIN: But they're going to say -- they're going to say, Elon, that you killed the company, because you said these things and they were inappropriate things and they didn't feel comfortable on the platform, right? That's what they're doing to say.

MUSK: Let's see how Earth responds to that.

SORKIN: Something -- okay, this goes back to --

MUSK: We'll both make our cases and we'll see what the outcome is.

SORKIN: What are the economics of that for you? You have enormous resources. You can keep this company going for a long time. Would you keep it going for a long time, if there was no advertising?

MUSK: I mean, if the company fails because of an advertising boycott, it will fail because of an advertising boycott and that will be what bankrupts the company and that's what everybody on Earth will know.

SORKIN: What do you think, then of the -- it goes back to the idea of trust.

MUSK: It will be gone because of an advertising boycott.

SORKIN: But you recognize that some of these people are going to say they didn't feel comfortable on the platform, and I just wonder, I ask you, think about that --

MUSK: Tell it to the judge.

SORKIN: But the judge is going to be --

MUSK: The judge is the public.

SORKIN: And you think that the public is going to say that Disney is making a mistake?

MUSK: Yes.

SORKIN: And they're going to boycott Disney?

MUSK: They already are.

SORKIN: Well, there are some that are for lots of different reasons, but you think this is going to -- that you have the -- this goes to actually the interesting thing of power and leverage.

MUSK: Let the chips fall where they may. Let the chips fall where they may.

SORKIN: Can I ask why that is the approach? and I ask it, because you've been --

MUSK: What's the other approach?

SORKIN: You've been very particular about, I mean, the approach to Tesla, when you think about the engineering involved in that, the approach to SpaceX, the approach to some of the stuff you're doing with AI has been very specific, right? There's not, a "let the chips fall where they may" approach to those businesses, I don't think.

MUSK: No, we focus on making the best product. And Tesla's gotten to where it's gotten with no advertising at all... Tesla currently sells twice as much in terms of electric vehicles, than the rest of all the electric carmakers in the United States combined. Tesla has done more to help the environment than all other companies combined. It would be fair to say that as the leader of the company, I've done more for the environment than everyone -- any single human on Earth.

SORKIN: How do you feel about that?

MUSK: How do I feel about that?

SORKIN: No, I'm asking you personally how you feel about that, because we are talking about power and influence --

MUSK: I'm saying what I care about is the reality of goodness, not the perception of it. And what I see all over the place is people who care about looking good while doing evil. Fuck them.

I think Disney's going to have a pretty hard time chipping away at that $2 Billion box office deficit in December...

Wish just made $591,475 on Day 8. The Marvels made $336,007 on Day 20.

Combined, that's their first Sub-Million day at $927,482.

Nope. Not interesting. Not even true.

He's not stepping down. He's just announced that he will be leaving once his current contract is up in 2026.

See.... This is why you have to be REALLY careful what information you parrot.

At this point, I'm kind of done watching all of the rage-bait YouTube idiots that cover movies and entertainment. Even most of the low-key ones that I used to respect have devolved to clickbait video titles and thumbnails that are super misleading if not outright lies.

The repercussions of Musk’s strong words were felt immediately, with reports emerging that Disney’s stock had suffered a hit, shedding market capitalization following Musk’s remarks. This added a financial dimension to the broader implications of his statements, demonstrating the weight and influence of his words on the stock market and investor sentiment.

That interview was on Wednesday.

At 9:30AM EST on Wednesday, Disney Stock was at $92.60.

At 10:30AM EST on Wednesday, Disney Stock was at $91.72.

At 12:00PM EST on Wednesday, Disney Stock was at $92.68.

At 12:30PM EST on Friday, Disney Stock was at $92.61.

When the market closed on Friday at 4:00PM EST on Friday, Disney Stock was at $92.56.

The "Big Scary Graph" zoomed in on the hours between 5:00AM and 11:30AM on Friday.

Though it is unclear when the article was published, I doubt very much that it was put together, approved and released all before 12:30PM when the stock was back up to $92.61.

And for those not keeping score, the Friday stock price for Disney closed the trading session at FOUR CENTS BELOW where it opened on Wednesday morning before Elon Musk's interview took place.

Way to spend $212 Million, Disney.
