Quote: Reviewed by BA_Harrison 3 / 10 The worst one yet. Fast & Furious 9 did what a lot of franchises do at some point: it took the action into outer space. This seemed to me like a good point to call it quits. But with the money still rolling in, nobody in Hollywood was going to end this cash cow; thus we have Fast X, the first in a rumoured three part finale (until the inevitable reboot). I've been on board with the franchise since the start, sticking with it as it moved from the street racing world into more James Bond territory, the action getting more and more ridiculous with each chapter. Seeing how each movie would top the one before in terms of craziness is what kept me entertained. But Fast X is just dumb, and it's not even dumb fun. The stunts are more preposterous than ever, but the film is never thrilling, every interminable action scene enhanced by rather ropey CGI (the flames, in particular, look really bad). There are some dreadful attempts at humour (mostly courtesy of Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris), and we get all that inevitable crap about the importance of family (if I see the gang having another barbecue I think I'll hurl). And then there's Jason Momoa as villain Dante... I can see what they were going for -- kooky flamboyant psycho capable of almost anything -- but Momoa is absolutely awful, his performance bordering on camp, not helped by the character's dubious choice of attire. It's hard to find Dante menacing when he's flouncing about in a silky shirt. I'll no doubt watch the next two films for the sake of completion, but with Momoa on board it'll be hard going. Fast X is easily the weakest of the series so far, but I'll give it 3/10 because I guess things could get even worse.

Why don't you watch the real black guy who isn't being paid millions of dollars to stand up for the big defenseless corporation?I was at the funeral of a guy whose favorite saying was "I'm not a racist, the Democrats are the racists." I told his widow long before he died to get life insurance on Jack because he is not thinking ahead about his kids' future and, the way Jack lives, he'll be dead before they are grown and self-supporting. She divorced Jack but kept paying the premiums on the life insurance. Jack was worth more dead than alive to his Ex, and so she and I laughed and went home happily when I repeated his catchphrase "I'm not a racist, the Democrats are the racists." Quote:Elsewhere at the box office, three holdovers from Disney rounded out the top of North American charts. In third place, “The Little Mermaid” added $22.8 million from 4,320 theaters, declining 46% from the weekend prior. After three weeks of release, the live-action remake is swimming along with $228 million at the domestic box office. But the big-budget film has been struggling at the international box office, where ticket sales have been floundering with $185 million. (Yes, that’s considered “floundering” for a movie that cost $250 million.) At one point, there was hope “The Little Mermaid” would near the $1 billion mark; after a disappointing turnout overseas, it’ll be lucky to hit $500 million.

With Disney's other woke Pixar flick in direct competition with it now, the Transformers movie and Spider Man still which are also geared toward kids still making money and a Super Mario movie that's still in over 1,400 theaters, I'm going to call $12 Million and change. The international box office on this woke turd is only $185 Million, and the chances this makes $300 Million in the US is looking bleaker every week. It will crack $450 Million by the end of this weekend when the international numbers come on, but will that be enough for it to even break $500 Million when it's out of theaters?

Quote: The Flash will take some consolation from a $75-million debut internationally, but this is a disappointing start to the new DC Universe, albeit a better start than Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ $30.1 million. Black Adam is probably a better benchmark, and it opened with $67 million back in October. Black Adam made $7.6 million from previews compared to The Flash’s $9.7 million, which gives a measure of how much The Flash has fallen away through the weekend. Things look even worse for Elemental, which risks posting the lowest opening ever for a Pixar movie, a record held by their very first film, Toy Story, which opened wit $29.1 million way back in 1995. Given that both films are getting generally good reviews and a positive reaction from audiences, one question worth asking is whether competition with other films is a factor here. There’s definitely evidence for that, with all films in the top six looking like they will end the weekend more than 20% behind our model’s Friday-morning prediction. Summer weather may be a factor too, and the Juneteenth long weekend could be causing some people to wait until Monday to go to the movies.

Quote:Disney’s struggles with “The Little Mermaid” remake are indicative of larger issues within the company. The once-unassailable entertainment empire is grappling with declining theme park attendance and a string of underperforming television shows. In an industry where success hinges on adaptability to changing trends and audience preferences, Disney’s formula seems to be losing its charm. Despite its vast array of intellectual properties and an enormous fan base, the company is finding it increasingly difficult to resonate with audiences as it did in the past. While “The Little Mermaid” is just one piece of the puzzle, it exemplifies the broader challenges Disney is currently facing. From diminishing theme park footfall to lackluster TV series, the cracks in Disney’s armor are becoming more apparent. To regain its former glory, the company must reevaluate its strategies and recapture the magic that once made it an unrivaled entertainment powerhouse. In a rapidly evolving industry, companies that fail to adapt risk falling behind their competitors. Disney now stands at a crossroads where it must reinvent itself to remain relevant and regain the trust and enthusiasm of its supporters. Whether the House of Mouse can weather this storm and reclaim its status as the reigning champion of the entertainment industry remains to be seen.

A movie that I've never even heard of until just right now called Mummies is currently 31st on the global list at $53,193,065 and needs a mention because only 8.04% (less than $5 Million) of that came from the domestic market, while the other 91.96% came from international box office. It has now made 442% of its production budget back, making it a clear winner based off of its low budget and its extremely high international take vs domestic take, two things which The Little Mermaid has never had in its favor. The Little Mermaid is hanging out with all the flops. The only ones even remotely close to it that will succeed will do so because they had reasonable budgets. And the only other list that matters: Winners and losers from the previous list: Winners: 1. M3GAN made 1,475% of its production budget of $12 Million. [FINAL] 2. Super Mario Bros Movie made 1,336% of its production budget of $100 Million. 3. Evil Dead Rise made 768% of its production budget of $19 Million. [FINAL] 4. [FINAL] Losers* (The movies who didn't double their production budget to cover marketing budgets and theater takes): 1. Shazam: Fury of the Gods only made 106% of its production budget. It wasn't about other films being in competition that lowered these numbers. You predicted a $220 Million dollar box office this weekend and got a $163 Million box office instead. THAT'S A $57 MILLION DEFICIT FOR ALL FILMS IN THE BOX OFFICE THIS WEEKEND!!!! It wasn't the weather either. You know full well and have posted it before that when it gets hot outside people are more likely to pay to go see a movie in the nice air conditioning. And it sure as hell wasn't Juneteenth. The only people who get that day off are bankers, teachers, post office workers and other government employees. Everybody else works on Juneteenth, including a vast majority of the blacks that the holiday is made for. You'd better put the "Woke Factor" into your prediction models going forward, hire me to make your predictions, or just keep doing what you're doing and pretending you don't know why your models are failing you until you become irrelevant.

Especially given the rise in costs of EVERYTHING during the Biden* Administration, I'm not going to argue that this isn't true, but somebody needs to bring some real receipts to the table proving this when it's been generally accepted for years that a movie had to double its production budget to break even. As I stated several times in these failure threads, I will not move the goalposts on this just to make the numbers look more in line than what I want to see, and I feel that this is happening more and more often as the year drags on with zero concrete evidence available to back up those claims.

What should Disney make, instead? Rather than a live-action The Little Mermaid musical, Disney should have done a cartoon version of Nunsense, a deeply sophomoric musical about 52 dead nuns (poisoned by tainted vichyssoise, so the surviving nuns had to put on a talent show to raise the money to bury them). It played throughout the world and spawned spin-offs that included Nunsense A-Men (the all-male version), Nuncrackers, and Meshuggah-Nuns, which allows Disney to make cartoon sequels to Nunsense. https://andrewtobias.com/a-few-words-about-nuns-and-more/ The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly

True to my word, I will put it in the "winners" category based off the twice the production budget rule of thumb, but the investors at Disney know the true numbers that were behind this and I suspect that we're going to see a huge ramp-down of live-action Disney remakes after this one failed to get even close to $1 Billion like its predecessors did while being the 2nd most expensive live-action remake in history for the company. In any event, unless I find out any undeniable information about the non-Production Budget financials being more than usually spent to promote this film, any small amount of money TLM makes going forward will be subtracting from Disney's gaping money pit of 2023. OH... and all that being said, I'd really appreciate it if YouTubers and movie review sites were to back up their claims that a movie now needs to make 2.5 to 3 times the production budget to break even. -------------------------------------------------- Growing up in a Republic was nice... Quote: For the past decade, Disney has been the Teflon movie studio, remarkably adept at withstanding the tectonic changes impacting the film industry, and well fortified by its arsenal of key properties such as Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar. But this year, the long-reigning titan of the box office has shown cracks as four of its biggest releases from those brands and others have struggled in theaters. There was the dispiriting release of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” a rare Marvel movie to likely lose tens of millions in its theatrical run; “The Little Mermaid,” a remake of the 1989 animated classic that fell drastically short of expectations; “Elemental,” an original story that tried and failed to recapture Pixar’s magic; and most recently “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” a nearly $300 million investment in one of cinemas’ most venerable franchises, which no longer appears to have the same hold on today’s audiences. On paper, these films seemed like they had all of the makings of huge hits, but somehow the Disney sparkle was lacking this time, in terms of filling movie theater seats.

[FINAL] 2. Super Mario Bros Movie made 1,313% of its production budget of $100 Million. 3. Evil Dead Rise made 768% of its production budget of $19 Million. 4. Scream IV made 483% of its production budget of $35 Million. [FINAL] 5. Mummies made 442% of its production budget of $12 Million. [FINAL] 6. John Wick: Chapter 4 made 432% of its production budget of $100 Million. 7. The Pope's Exorcist made 405% of its production budget of $18 Million. [FINAL] 8. Creed III made 365% of its production budget of $75 Million. [FINAL] 9. Jesus Revolution made 353% of its production budget of $15 Million. [FINAL] 10. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 made 314% of its production budget of $250 Million. 11. Knock at the Cabin made 275% of its production budget of $20 Million. [FINAL] 12. Cocaine Bear made 254% of its production budget of $35 Million. [FINAL] 13. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse made 248% of its production budget of $100 Million. 14. Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania 232% of its production budget of $200 Million. Losers* (The movies who didn't double their production budget to cover marketing budgets and theater takes): 1. Shazam: Fury of the Gods only made 106% of its production budget. [FINAL] 2. 65 only made 124% of its $45,000,000 production budget. [FINAL] 3. AIR only made 129% of its $70,000,000 production budget. [FINAL] 4. The Little Mermaid only made 137% of its $250,000,000 production budget. 5. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves only made 139% of its $150,000,000 production budget. [FINAL] 6. Fast X only made 186% of its $340,000,000 production budget. *As of right now, Shazam, AIR, D&D and 65 are the guaranteed losers in 2023 because they are out of the box office and will not make money back for their investors. The Little Mermaid and Fast X are in trouble because of their production costs. ALSO OF NOTE: If you reference the first list above, Cocaine Bear is the ONLY movie so far in 2023 that didn't gross at least 100% of its production budget on its opening weekend that did not end up at least doubling it by the time it is out of theaters. The rest of the movies that didn't do so are on the Losers list directly above. The lesson for Disney, besides firing all the woke staff, is to learn that its GUARANTEED BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE days are over. M3GAN only had a $12 Million budget and will likely end up being the 2nd most profitable movie of 2023 for its investors when Super Mario's theater run is over. They've got to stop spending over $200 Million on every movie they make unless they want to start making things that people want to see again. It's one thing to look at The Little Mermaid as a huge win by saying it's 8th place Domestic and 13th place Worldwide for 2023 after its first weekend (now 4th place and 8th place, respectively), but when a movie only makes 65% of its production budget worldwide on its first weekend its doomed to lose money in the end after real world accounting is factored in. If the movie had cost $100 Million to make, it would have already been a winner. -------------------------------------------------- Growing up in a Republic was nice... Shame we couldn't keep it.
