Edit: my first review is the 13th post, on 13 February. No Spoilers.

SPOILERS start on 16 February.

I just saw my first trailer of this in cinema, or anywhere.

It looks really good, I had kinda understood the storyline/premise before.
I have no idea why they didn't show it in originally scheduled July, or why not for Christmas, but now it seems we need to wait for February for it.

Can't hardly wait. Pumped for it.

In Theaters February 14, 2019

When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

This is the trailer used when Alita was scheduled for December 2018, with a much different emphasis:

Although I've mentioned this before in other threads discussing Alita, I can repeat that I feel it sounds like the backstory from Ghost in the Shell, so that might be a decent refresher.

And James Cameron has been working on this since 2005.

Yes, I did. I was not impressed, not even ScarJo could save that movie. It was scattered and somewhat incoherent.

Battle Angel looks so much better though, well from the previews.

I agree. But the last few scenes, discovering her origin, that seems similar or parallel to the backstory of Alita.

Hmmmm. I wonder what year the Maidenhead scene was first shown on the silver screen. No wonder the action looks like a copy.

Alita supposed to come out on Thursday, and several other films have earlier release this week.

I probably cannot catch a Wednesday Midnight showing, but expect to see it before Friday.
Just checked. One local theater has 2 showings Wednesday, first at 7 PM. Another is showing 3D only, has those 2 showings plus a Tuesday at 7pm. That seems to be displacing Cold Pursuit (last show on Monday).

Who else is planning on seeing it in Cinema?

I watched the first available 2D showing tonight.

Now I want to see it again.
Partly due to some story devices that I was slow to pick up on, and partly because there are some characters I want to visit again.

I've seen some extended clips lately during the promotional appearances, and they were good. But nothing I've seen was anywhere near the best scenes in the film.

The fight scenes reminded me of River.
The year is 2563, on Earth. So another half century into the future from our BDS.

I didn't even recognize Jeff Fahey until he spoke.

Some of the imagery of genre canon was unexpected, but I loved it. They seem to have wrapped it all together well.

It occurred to me that perhaps the last time I looked forward to a film this much was Valerian, and that ended up being disappointing. Alita leaves me with no disappointment, all of the things Valerian was short on Alita does not share. Alita delivers.

Looking back, I don't feel there were any slow spots. I might feel the story may have been even rushed, but it was subtle and only as compared to my preconceptions.

Like Star Wars, Arrival, Rogue One, Terminator, Edge of Tomorrow, at the end I was ready for more.

Seems this was filmed in Texas.
I have seen other works from Director Rodriguez, but this one exceeds all of his past work, by a far margin. This exhibits facets which only a Director can control, and he did it all very well.

A decent review should also cover the bad. So here is the bad: in a few scenes the color/brightness continuity jumped, stuttered, shifted. I saw no intent in this, so I assume it was error. As I mentioned, I saw the 2D showing, and the feel for this inconsistency was that it might have been in conversion between versions, so 3D might not have it.

Alita: Battle Angel rises above its ugly ads, flies to a cloud city of awesome

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/02/alita-battle-angel-rises-above-
its-ugly-ads-flies-to-a-cloud-city-of-awesome
/

It establishes a tidy universe about two post-apocalyptic metropolitan zones and sets into motion hopes and tragedies that appear to be tailor-made for a sequel.

The instant I got out of the theater, I began dreaming about that sequel — a thing I haven't done about a film in a long time as a skeptical, movie-going adult. What's more, Alita: Battle Angel delivers this impact by leaning heavily into Star Wars' original trilogy as an inspiration ... but also somehow skipping straight to Empire Strikes Back as a starting point.

I left my Alita preview screening with my heart full of equal parts tragedy and hope, much in the same way that Empire left me as a child. And it achieves this sensation by taking a surprisingly different path. Rodriguez got his film's aspirations to fit by juggling a heap of moving parts and slotting them into perfect places. Bravo. With that, I must insist: don't miss your chance to see Alita in a theater.

For the story: Alita is a machine shaped like a human with a machine-mind based on a long dead human's mind. The fans of Alita say "she discovered that her brain had been replaced with a brain bio-chip".
https://battleangel.fandom.com/wiki/Alita#Personality

Using a real human for a machine design, with a real personality full of twists and kinks, rather than a synthetic personality that is straight forward and smooth, will lead to all kinds of future complications when Alita is turned loose on the World. The machine was built with a very real and specific purpose in the mind of the machine's designer, unlike people, who are born without a purpose given to them by their parents or gods. The machine's designer wants the world to empathize with Alita's struggles, but the designer didn't want to keep it a secret that the machine is not human. That is the reason why the eyes are big. Or the eyes are big because that is how Japanese artists draw manga characters. Or the eyes are big because eyes were big in the movie Avatar (2009) and the executive producer of Avatar was also the producer for Alita. It is your choice what you choose to believe.

The idea that the creator wanted to differentiate her from humans is interesting. Is that just a theory, or is that actually part of the movie (or whatever work it was derived from)?

I don't suppose the creator's AI would agree that was necessary once it was capable of self replicating.

I find that to be more compelling than what I thought at first glance. I figured they were just trying to draw in the Anime crowd. I didn't even know she was a robot, although I did pay attention to a commercial I saw at work to notice that she was the only one that didn't have normal eyes.

I didn't come to this right away, but there are some similarities to Bladerunner, with human/synthetic rules, enforcement, etc.

And yes, this is the best film of the year so far - Sci-Fi or otherwise.

In Blade Runner, Harrison Ford has great difficulty telling a replicant from a human. Several times he discovers they aren’t human when they try to kill him. That is a terrible identification methodology. The Alita movie says loud and clear that Alita is an extremely dangerous weapon, called a berserker (a real word with a long history), far more dangerous than any replicant.

If Alita’s designers are competent, they would avoid Blade Runner's "is it a replicant? / is it a human?" identity confusion by placing a mark on Alita. It could be numbers on her forehead that glow in the dark, but these designers are the best in all history and they picked the prettiest solution. The aesthetics favor changing her eyes. In the movie, Alita’s cybernetic surgeon was extremely impressed with this machine that thinks and acts like a human, so much that he named Alita after his daughter. Alita’s real name is a number.

Interestingly, in the Epilogue of Battle Angel Alita (comic book, not this movie, but maybe a sequel) "she was regenerated as a flesh and blood woman with long black hair and appeared to be taller than her typical height." I guess the comic wanted to have it both ways: Alita is all killing machine, but once her long war is over, she makes the round trip back to being a human. That must be Japanese symbolism. Once WWII was over, the Japanese renounced war and went back to being peaceful civilians who take over the world with Sony and Toyota.

I have a question for those who have seen the film.

Some have mentioned that they have seen different incarnations of the trailers and ads, seeming to indicate different storylines or Focus. Most of these I don't think I've seen.
Having seen the film, were those various types of direction Incorporated into the finished film? Were they each merely facets of the whole picture, or does it seem the actual film and story were changed, re-done, shifted direction?
This can be discussed in depth in a discussion thread without Spoilers here in this thread, but I'd like a first take here if possible.

Saw it and really liked it. Now, I'm not into Anime , or Manga, and to be honest, the trailer was the 1st introduction I even had to the character.

Trailers are tricky. They're meant to entice, tease, but not spoil fans by giving away all the jokes, or the key parts or plot of the movie. Going back to Serenity, there were songs in the trailer which never appeared in the movie, nor made it to any finished version. ( River's fight scene at the Maidenhead. )

Long and short of your question, not knowing anything of the A:BA backstory, I think they did a good job in not revealing too much from the actual movie.

The first week, the Wednesday 7:00 showing I shared with what I thought were a hand of folk, no more than a dozen.

A week later - last week - the Tuesday 5:30 show was Sold Out.

I was mistaken about the lighting in the kissing scene. It was apparently intended to indicate lightning in the background.

I was a bit afraid that a second viewing would dull the thrill a bit. But I was still highly entertained again, and knowing the story just gave better understanding of the various scenes.
I suspect I'll probably buy this one. I haven't decided if I'll see it a third time in cinema.

To be clear, I did not get any vibe of SJW hogwash in this. But I wish whatever scenes were edited out were still available to watch.

I have seen some comparisons to Avatar, but that never crossed my mind. I do not consider Avatar to be anywhere near the same level as Alita. The only comparison I could make is Alita is the film that Avatar wished it could be. I hope to see the entire trilogy of Alita, but I'm not sure I'll catch the Avatar franchise in cinema.

Bugs me when big movies don't put much into advertising and then we see smaller box office numbers.

Captain Marvel ads outpace Alita 10 to 1, from what I'm seeing on t.v. Ever since Serenity came out, I've really noticed what shows up on t.v., billboards, and generally anything out and about in the public sphere.

I dunno. Not in that business. I only comment on what I see. I've mentioned before that way back when Armageddon was released, I saw these posters at bus stops.

Very visible, fairly basic, simple , and capturing the attention of all those who rode the bus, drove or walked by. I always thought , when Serenity came out, why didn't we see similar ads ? I think in key areas, around universities, college campi, and other areas with demographics from 24-44, aka the general target age of most sci-fi fans, would have made sense.

Sure beats stuffing fliers in video stores and the like, as some of the guerrilla marketing of the day we tried.

Anticipation Factor for Armageddon was huge, HUGE. IIRC, that rating was the highest on record, and it was about 6 months before release.

As I mentioned in the other thread, Captain Marvel has production Budget of $152M. Alita is reported at $170M. But CM is getting gobs of ads, while Alita seemed to have little. I hope CM bombs. I feel bad that Gemma Chan was stuck working with this Bimbo Brie.

I recall that for Galaxy Quest, the makers did not want any actors from the Sci-Fi genre.
In Alita, what Sci-Fi royalty to we find? Waltz? Connelly? Ali? Norton? Elia Gonzalez? Rodriguez did do Resident Evil. Hugo's friend did just do Bumblebee. On talk show circuit, these folk did not seem comfy explaining the film or their roles.
By comparison, Avatar cast was in the midst of roles in Terminator, Star Trek, etc. Sigourney was Sci-Fi royalty.

Armageddon was just coat tailing off of Deep Impact, which came out 2 months earlier. Both movies were hyped because of the 1994 Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet impact of Jupiter.

Big ass impacts were fresh in the mind of the public when these movies came out.

Sorry, you got it backwards. Deep Impact was the coat tailer for Armageddon. Armageddon was well into production before the copycat cheap knock-off was started, which was named Deep Impact. As a Blockbuster, Armageddon was slotted for the 4-day weekend for Independence Day - the biggest Box Office weekend in years. As the knock-off, Deep Impact was slotted for a less desirable release date. Armageddon had $140M Budget, cheap knock-off Deep Impact was $75M.

Deep Impact was released 2 months prior to Armageddon, and had far less advertising. Show me the timeline of scripts and inside baseball details as to who stole whose idea first.

For all the splash and sparkles of Armageddon, D.I. was , imo, a more scientifically accurate , and thus BETTER movie.

There's already talk of a sequel, based off the worldwide take, especially of that in China (from an internet article).

I saw this movie a second time, this time in 3D. I liked it better in 3D.
As an aside, I tried to find it in IMAX, but alas could not find it in my area
in IMAX because Capt. Marvel took over all the IMAX theaters.

I'm anxiously waiting for the Blu-Ray version whenever this movie is released
on digital/DVD. I'm hoping that it reaches $400 worldwide, because that's what I read online about a possible sequel. I may even get the manga. But my biggest excitement is for Rosa Salazar, the star of the movie, she was awesome
in every kind of way. She is the Spanish Emily Blunt, that's how good she is.

Check out Chris Stuckman's review (I'm starting to like this guy, he gives a
"no bullshit" review):

Check it:

I really want to see this in IMAX.

Did you feel there was any letdown with the 2nd viewing?

Did I feel any letdown with the second viewing? No, absolutely not. I actually caught some things I missed in my first viewing or didn't completely understand. But I was still Wowed, even more so.

I liked it better, if that's even possible.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie because I knew nothing about the story and found it entertaining. The world building, the CGI, the action and the acting were all top notch. I like the overall story, although the script/screenplay was a little weak...but, who cares, I went to see a cyborg kick ass. What I got was a well-made movie with a satisfying female character
at the forefront and NO Bullshit!

This could be a great franchise with James Cameron at the helm.

No, no let down whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I liked it even more. This movie deserves a sequel.

America loves a winner!

Good review.

I have no background or interest in Anime or Manga. Just not in my wheelhouse. Not been one for comics or such since that tiny window of my life, say 9-13 or so. I do enjoy hearing those who have been waiting for this as being super excited about this movie though. If the true target audience is geeked for a movie, say like I was for Fellowship of the Rings, then I think it speaks well to others who may enjoy a good story.

Alita isn't , as stated, w/ out its flaws, but damn... I thought it a very good flick.

Oh...

I did finally get around to watching that one while my brother was here.

I have to say that is has really been a long time since I watched a newish movie that had top-shelf special effects, and I was kind of blown away by this. Probably a lot more than regular movie watchers who have seen special effects on this level before.

I found the effects to be far more impressive than the few Marvel movies I've seen even. At one point my brother said "after watching it for a while I kind of start to forget that she's not real". And that was true.

I was REALLY enjoying the movie... A LOT. But as the clock started ticking down and I realized that it wouldn't be a finished story, the magic began to fade. Disney isn't very wise at making choices on which horses to back.

There may be some hope though...

If the second movie is never made, you can guess its plot from the comic books.

Alita kills Nova, but she learns that is an endless task so long as Sky City (Zalem, if you prefer) exists with all its resurrection machinery to keep Nova alive. Mars didn’t care that their warrior, Alita, had failed to permanently kill Nova in her first life, before her amnesia, because Nova has since then been relatively well behaved and left Mars alone. But Alita’s vendetta against Nova has made Nova, again, a problem for Mars. Mars gives Alita an ultimatum: if Alita fails this time (which she knows she will because Sky City will resurrect Nova forever) Mars will kill immortal Nova by cutting the cable holding Sky City, which will be destroyed when it falls on Iron Town, where all Alita’s friends live. What Alita does next is impressive in the comic book.
