Given the success of Fox’s reboots of The X-Files and 24, and Prison Break returning this year, Fox Broadcasting President of Entertainment David Madden said he’d be open to a Firefly reboot if Joss Whedon himself wanted to revisit it. Madden suspects Whedon is now too busy with movies, and he would not consider doing Firefly without Whedon.

Fox was one of the few networks to present an executive session for the Television Critics Association (the others were CW, Showtime, and PBS). In addition to panels on upcoming series like Prison Break and 24: Legacy and current shows like Star and Bones, Fox executives offered news on The X-Files and other fan-favorite shows that might return.

One interesting comment: "David Madden is a very nice man and exceedingly polite/charming. He could have very easily been making pleasant small talk."

Another comment had a different view of Madden's motives: "Joss won't do it. Too much time has passed and he has other projects. So Madden can safely say that, paying lip service to fans while knowing it won't happen. He just passed the blame card to Joss. Dick move. Very sad."

Probably said that knowing Joss was too busy.
Now he can say "well, we wanted to do something but Joss said no."

They could ease into it by adopting the Sherlock principle. Do three or four episodes a year. It means you have a lot of time to write and edit before you film.

Joss may well be tempted by this approach, as might Fox (which made a lot of money from a "failure".)

Yup. Sounds like all talk, no action.

Do you think Joss is going to say no to all that easy movie money to reboot a "failed" show? As much as I'd love to see that, I'm pretty sure he's got very lucrative commitments lined up for the next decade.

I am wont to recall that some James Cameron dude, after having made the biggest grossing film in history, decided to do a little TV show called Dark Angel, which I enjoyed very much - and own.

I don't think JC had any lack of commitments or opportunities at the time. If Joss is in love enough with the Verse, we could all luck out.

Doesn't fly SECOND. We all know he didn't have a chance to flesh out much of the story line at all. The creative process is creating. So let him create the show he claimed meant the most to him that he was denied. Let him answer some of the many questions that have been asked over the years. Like where did Mal get the money for Serenity???

If Joss had wanted to "flesh out" the story lines or answer the many Firefly questions that have been asked, he would have wrote the Serenity comics himself. But he didn't. Same with the Buffy comics. He didn't write them either. Joss Whedon is on the cover as the Executive Producer, but this is not the answer to any questions about Firefly I have ever had:

Fox Interested in ‘Firefly’ Reboot, But Only Under One Condition

Fox brought The X-Files and Prison Break back for more episodes, which might have a few folks wondering if that means Firefly, an admittedly less popular show, could return as well. Creator Joss Whedon‘s sci-fi western only lasted one wonderful season on Fox, but the story continued with the 2005 film, Serenity. Could Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the remaining crewmembers of the Serenity ever return to star in a second season of Firefly on Fox? Fox Broadcasting President of Entertainment, David Madden, recently commented on the matter, claiming he’s open to more Firefly if Whedon is.

Below, learn why we might or might not see a Firefly reboot.

During a panel last month at the TCA 2017, Madden told Rotten Tomatoes he’s open to a Firefly reboot (via TV Overmind). Of course, he’s only interested if Whedon wants to do it, and Whedon is busy with movies. Madden doesn’t want more episodes of Firefly without The Avengers: Age of Ultron director.

Three years ago, producer-writer Tim Minear stated he “would never foreclose the possibility” of bringing the show back. “I think a limited series of some kind would work best,” he said. “Something like that could also work if, say, 20th [Century Fox, who owns the rights] could partner with Netflix or another distributor.” If they ever went that route, there might be some issues with the rights.

After the release of Age of Ultron, Whedon told Collider “there are rights [issues] between Fox and Universal because one had the show and one had the movie, so it gets a little funky fresh with that.” There’s also the matter of whether Whedon would want to make more episodes of Firefly, which he’s always held the same position on: he’d do it if it felt right and when the cast is freed up from their busy schedules. First and foremost, Whedon wants to tell another story, not just find an excuse to get together with his friends.

Years ago he said he’d take another look at the idea when Fillion isn’t starring in Castle anymore, which is now the case, and when he’s no longer “the Tom Hagen of the Marvel Universal,” which he’s not anymore. He said he “might look and see where the market is then.” As for the star of the series, Fillion, he’s skeptical he’d play Malcolm Reynolds again. He thinks another season of Firefly is an “impossibility,” but he said the same of the movie, so he doesn’t try to underestimate Whedon.

Disappointment controls emotions at first. Then reality sets in and you live with it. Unless of course, he reboots the show in some fashion. But yes, ultimately the decision lies with Joss.

Why Firefly Should Come Back
www.theverge.com/2017/2/10/14576156/fox-firefly-reboot-joss-whedon-ser
enity

The primary argument for bringing Firefly back has always been that it never fully felt like the show got its due, at least in terms of finding time to properly tell the stories Joss Whedon set up.

Serenity and a series of Dark Horse spinoff comics filled the largest holes and answered the major questions, but it just seems like there’s so much more for these characters to do. . . .

The cast has this easy camaraderie that made them fun to watch and the universe had a gritty realism that was refreshing after growing up watching the clean-cut adventures of the crew of the Enterprise. Sure — most of the main storylines issues were tied up rather hastily through Serenity and the spinoff comics. But it didn’t have to be that way, and one can only assume that Whedon has plenty of ideas about where he wanted to take Firefly. . . .

OK, I see an above post with the same web address.

On the very same page are three obviously, just from the titles, satirical stories about Firefly actors (Yes, Joss is an actor because he dubbed the voice of the Lilac trading station agent in Serenity):

I agree with Moose. No matter what executive F*X puts out front to say they are now interested in taking another look at a Whedon project....they can’t be trusted. Nathan Fillion’s “Drive, Summer Glau’s “Terminator” and Joss’ “Dollhouse”, have all made attempts at episodic television on that network, and all have been shot down. (I don’t think that Drive even made four episodes).
So now, now that the creators and cast of Firefly have moved on (and many have had a good deal of success in their careers), the network is willing to consider maybe a reboot? Geezzz....thanks.
What morons. The lower executives of the network may not have been around during all the BS, but I’m sure that many of the main persons responsible are. Let’s not forget the real reason why the show failed. Joss bucked the system. The network didn’t want Zoe & Wash (Gina & Alan) to be married. Joss refused to move on this. They constantly wanted re-writes and other things, Joss fought them. They broadcast the episodes out of order and did other things to roll it downhill. The show had a constant cloud of doom looming overhead. Watching “Done the Impossible”, a Firefly fan story, one can see that the cast and crew of the show were continually worried about cancelation, and weren’t that surprised when it came.
Now don’t get me wrong, I would love me some more Firefly, even if it came with a new crew (I think Joss could pull it off). However, my attitude is that they just want to kick him again. People in power like the folk at that network are never wrong, and even when proven when they are, they won’t admit it......
Sign me, A Bitter Browncoat

It's all kind of a moot point now, right? Fox is very likely going to be sold to Disney or Comcast soon. So, the real question is will they want a Firefly reboot and would they be willing to do it justice. Honestly I can't really see either of them being a good home for Firefly. I'm happy to be proven wrong though.

The 100 best TV shows of all time (as of January 2021)

#50 is Firefly
Year: 2002

Snatched from us too soon by a combination of network stupidity, scheduling, and a lack of foresight, Joss Whedon’s space Western is sparky and witty but carries a heavy heart. The crew of the Serenity are a disparate mixture of fugitives, crooks, and war vets in an alien-free universe. They were just gelling into one of the most intriguing ensembles on TV when the show was cruelly axed.
