Okay, so ST2 is a shadow of the original, and really only remotely related, but I did notice an interesting tone of the dialogue.

It seems like the character's speech patterns are a little like those in the Firefly 'verse. Sort of an old-west, common-man, informal way of talking that's at odds with the typical futuristic SF genre. I wouldn't be at all surprised if ME's influence was at the root of it. Suddenly, this kind of dialogue is cool and "new." But we were there first!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have not seen ST 2, and quite honestly the trailer I have seen did not look too impressive. If Sci Fi channel ever runs it, I will check it out; if not, I will not see it.

I saw part of it the other day on Starz or Showtime or something, have all those channels so at odd hours there's always something to watch. But even though I love Starship Troopers for various reasons, yeah I dig cheese, the sequel I couldn't watch long enough to figure out their speech patterns. It was just so bad it wasn't even funny, if it were bad enough to be funny I could appriciate it but this went way beyond the pale.

But since you mentioned it I'll force myself to sit down and watch it the next time I see it's on. But...it'll hurt real bad.

It was pretty disappointing. I'm a big fan of the original too, because of everything it was, and because of everything ST2 isn't. I was braced for it, what with the direct to dvd thing and all. I couldn't help but wonder what makes this a "SPECIAL EDITION!" DVD?

I think it was shot on digital video, and there were mostly competent performances, but the plot was oh-so-predictable. I think for a sequel to have succeeded, it would have to have been made immediately after the original with the same actors and characters and a direct pickup from the last scene of one to the first scene of the next.

Did anyone else recognize Richard Burgi from "The Message"?

Odd side note about that-- the second Starship Troopers was written by Ed Neumeier, who also wrote..... the first Starship Troopers. The screenplay, I mean. Not the book. Obviously.

I've always liked his dialogue, he's got a weird way of putting movies together. See also the first RoboCop.

A rather rattling... desensitation to violence, even moreso than me. Weird.

Phoenixship:

Yeah, and Richard Burgi -- who plays Womack in 'The Message' -- is Captain Dax in Troopers II...

Pretty horrific, low-budget flick. And I don't mean 'horrific' in a good way, either.

Respectfully,

I haven't seen the movie only the trailer.

I loved the original as it was really a comedy and a poke at American culture. The bugs were the good guys happily minding their own business till the Mormans came knocking lol.

Is it true that in this sequal they have tried to make it something serious? If so there's your problem.

Why-oh-why-oh-why can't we get a Roughnecks movie?

Or heck, even a series finale?

Haven't seen ST2 or have any interest in doing so. However, Space, the Canadian SF channel is having a contest where you can win a Starship Troopers uniform. I was considering entering just so I could have part of an Alliance soldier uniform. ;)

What I loved was the fact that Richard Burgi's character was so much like Womac that I burst out laughing every time I saw him interacting with people in Federation armor as its the same stuff they used in Firefly. Now replace the bugs with Reavers and change the dialogue from Federation to Alliance and tell me how much better the movie would have been.

Truth be told though, I actually kind of liked the movie. It wasnt great or anything but I didnt turn it off and if it should ever come on TV I'm not going to walk out of the room muttering in Chinese.

Dont ask me silly questions.
I wont play silly games.

I recognized when I picked up the DVD at Wal Mart the other day. Almost didn't because of the beard. Good to see him doing something. I liked him in "The Sentinel" & in The Message.
