I accidentally stumbled across Firefly on the SciFi channel a few weeks ago. I started watching at episode 4. I caught a few episodes on SciFi then switched to NetFlix to finish up these season. I've been hooked ever since. I would actually go beyond 'hooked' and say 'obsessed'. I've seen the entire series 5 times since I first discovered it and I watch Serenity as soon as I finish the series. I guess what boggles my mind the most is that this has never happened to me before. Without trying to sound pompous, I'm an educated, respected, career minded individual. i've never been absorbed into any other piece of media/science fiction, nor have I ever been even the least bit interested in it.

The show has touched me in a way that I never thought a piece of media could touch me. I love every minute of it. What surprises me most is that it's so out of character for me. I just had to reach out and make contact with people that felt the same way.

Sincerely,
Serein, a Virginia Firefly fan

Hi!

I know exactly what you mean. I'd been a fan of other things before, but looking back that was really in moderation. Firefly, for me, displaced just about everything else, and was also the first time I ever reached out to talk to other fans of the same thing.

There are times I almost wish I wasn't as interested in it so I could focus more on my career, so it's almost like I've had to split myself into two.

You are in good company here. Welcome.

If you need to find ways to scratch your Firefly itch, there are comic books, some official short stories in the visual companions (which are themselves a great look behind the scenes), and there's always fanwork.

Yeah, you are not the only one. I never considered myself a "fan" of anything before I came here, associating "fan" with "fanatic", and the obvious connotions that come with. There's just something about Firefly that just is like coming home to the home you always wanted to have, but never knew about...

Anyways, welcome aboard, Serein... Wishy goes and gets a virtual Browncoat from the supply... There. That fits nice!
Feel free to tell us a little about yourself, and if not- I'm sure Bun or someone will be along shortly with the Mudder's Milk and to point you to the buffet... Glad you could make it here!

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Ni hao, Serein!

You've certainly found yourself a home here. There are Browncoats abound in this corner of the 'verse, and we hail from all parts of the globe.

You ever need anything, give me a shout, if I can't help you, I may know someone who can. Love to talk Firefly, especially with new fans who, like myself, as you said, never realized a piece of media could touch them the way Firefly does.

If you want to have some fun, come join us in the Caption Tightpants thread...it's a fun game I've been running for about, oh, 7 years now, and new folk are always welcome to jump in at any time.

Welcome aboard!
See you in the world!

Thank you all for such a warm, quick response. I'm a nuclear engineer (it sounds much fancier that it really is, I'm more like a real life Homer Simpson than anything else :) . I find that the 'Firefly' series is like a comfy pair of pajamas. When I'm sitting in my living room I have 'Firefly' playing in the background (courtesy of Netflix...no advertisement meant).

I feel as though I'm a physical part of the crew, that I know each and every character personally. I still laugh and cheer, I still get sad at the episodes regardless of how many times I've seen them.

It is so wonderful to meet other people who have the same feeling I am. You are all quite wonderful! Thanks again for the quick responses.

Regards,
Chris aka Serien

Got us a new browncoat, h'mmm?
I see Wishy has performed Part 1 of the Greeting Ritual: The supplying of the Virtual Browncoat (One Size Fits All) (TM)
So grab your personal bottle of Mudder's Milk from the sign-in desk here (you are # 46683, BTW) and pick up a punnet of strawberries from the stack behind the chair.
Stash your extra stuff in a cargo cage and head up to the galley for a questioning of the buffet.
We have fresh bao for once, and the usual hot cheese and mango setup.
Shimmerwine is in the fountain at the after end of the table - - don't put your feet too far under; one of the teenage flans has taken up residence.
Ice-planets are in the bottom shelf of the cooler. All flavors, at least for now. I've been on a leetle supply-liberation junket. Pickin's was good and damages was minimal.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Welcome aboard the best boat in the 'verse.

Unlike you, I have been a science fiction and fantasy fan for almost as long as I can remember. I'm old enough to have watched Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Star Trek, etc, during their original broadcasts. I've also been reading SF for nearly 50 years. There are shows, movies and books I've experienced many times over, but it was not until Firefly came along that I became truly obsessed about a show and its characters.

Firefly has touched so many viewers because it is unique. I'm hard-pressed to describe it to anyone, I say they just have to experience it for themselves. It transcends genre, whether you're talking about SF or westerns. If I had to create another genre for it I would have to call it realistic fantasy. Yep, it's set 500 years in the future, in another solar system, on a space ship, and yet the characters and situations are so realistic that almost anyone should be able to identify with it and embrace it.

As others have already mentioned, there are comics and visual companions, but also ship blueprints and maps of the 'verse, action figures, ornaments and apparel, as well as fan-fiction and fan-art in the Blue Sun Room. Plenty of shiny things to keep your attention between watching episodes.

And yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean, Firefly is a place you could BE, that you might WANT to be, as opposed to most stories which you watch from a distance.

On that note, flannel pants are just awesome, they are...

Don't demean your meaningful passion for Firefly by calling it an "obsession", our society totally uses that word wrong, in real life it comes from the Greek word meaning punishment and refers to something horrid that you don't want to think about but which you can't get out of your head. I think we all love Firefly here, so its a passion, not an obsession.

Welcome home. Once you've been to Serenity, you never leave :)

I've been here for a long time now (I'm one of the early 'coats that fought to keep it on the air). I know exactly what you mean. This show just strikes a chord with you.

For me, it was their driving survival. At the time the show aired, my mom was undergoing chemo for colon cancer that was found during an ER visit for what she thought was severe food poisoning. Needless to say money was very tight and and Mal's' "we're still flyin'" resonated.

And then, there are the fans. I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet some of my fellow 'coats, and people involved in the show. I've found them to be like reuniting with a long lost friends. I've seen browncoats assist with work searches, throw backup bashes when official events fell through, provide crashspace, weddings, help each other move, get the firefly DVD's into space, stocked on local library shelves, fire departments, etc. I think you will find that overall the browncoat community is full of some of the most interesting and good hearted people around (trolls which are around, do not count!).

Hi Serein - Can't tell you how many people show up here and say almost that exact same thing, like me even.

Here's a fun extra - a script that was never filmed (I believe parts of it were used in other eps, so it was effectively broken up and still used).

It reads like a real ep of course, so it's kind of like an extra episode - something every fan wants to hear - enjoy!

Welcome Home! It always makes me happy when we have new fans.

I watched Firefly when it aired 9/20/2002 and I still want more. There's a deleted scene from the first ep Serenity between Zoe and Simon, "Once you've been to Serenity you never leave; you just learn to live there."

Joss has a big year with the Avengers movie coming out. He wrote and directed it. He also has Cabin in the Woods coming out that he made a few years ago. To top it off he made is own indie movie- Much Ado About Nothing.

BTW- I was in Serenity as an extra, scene selection 4 after Jayne says "Let's be bad guys." As Mal and Zoe enter, I'm the redhead you see. :) I'm also in the fan documentary Done The Impossible - a must for any fan.

If this shows up twice it is because I thought the first one didn't post, so, here goes.

The thing that grabbed me first was the way it felt like reality. Like the original Alien or Blade Runner it doesn't pretend that man will someday fall into John Lennon's imaginary commune. It looks at the imperfect for what it is and simply says what if this were then? Almost like a William Gibson novel we see a future that is gritty and not so...shiny.

Your story sounds a lot like mine. I've never been this taken with a TV show before. Or with a book, or any kind of media thing, really. My husband regularly searches for new Sci-Fi on netflix, and about two and a half years ago, he found Serenity, which we watched and enjoyed. About two years ago, he told me the TV series was on streaming video and we watched them all. He'd started watching without me, so the first episode I watched was "Bushwhacked." The Firefly bug bit me, and bit me hard. I started looking on the internet for more about Firefly, and eventually found fffans here. I lurked about for many months before signing up. I've never gone this crazy over any form of media, and certainly never even considered writing fanfiction before Firefly. Heck, I didn't even know what "fanfiction" was! I just felt compelled to continue the story, and as it appeared that it wasn't going to be happening on TV anytime soon, I started writing. It's a slippery slope, and one that I'm very happy to be sliding on.

Welcome aboard, Serein, and keep flyin'.

Welcome, Serein.

Tell us wut your name meanz.

I'm a relatively new member. Like everybody, I am obsessed with the show, but I control it. I don't want to get jaded, so will only watch it once or twice a year.

Unlike you, I get obsessed with thingz often. I've only missed 3 or 4 original airingz uv The Simpsonz since the seriez began. I saw Star Wars 27 timez at the theater back when it came out. I watched Bedazzled about a dozen timez at the theater and DVD in the year it came out and at least once a year since.

My fave movie seriez iz Terminator, so like Firefly, I limit myself with them.
