Firefly Traveller Discussion thread

Here are the URLs for each of the post so far. People have already been posting to the blog lines, so I’m not sure it is best to just continue those discussions here, or just let people know you made a post on the original blog entry. We’ll see what works best I guess.

Just a thought

Where does it take place?

Where does it take place (continued)?

If you want a reasonably accurate and yet quite entertaining book about terraforming read Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson (and its sequals Green Mars & Blue Mars).

You don't need full terran (1G) gravity for terraforming and there isn't really a practical way of changing a planets gravity.

As for magnetic fields - the main reason to change that would be to help protect colonists from stellar radiation. Mining into the poles (to do what exactly?) isn't the most practical way of protecting from radiation. Living underground or in protected buildings should suffice. Also increasing the atmospheric pressure will help somewhat. On planets without this protection cancers and other problems will be commonplace.

Terraforming is mainly a matter of getting the atmosphere of a planet fit for life. You'll also need to regulate the temperature somewhat so that the atmosphere doesn't freeze or boil off into space.

Temperature can be changed with _huge_ orbiting mirrors or shades. You can also increase temperature by excavating pits that reach down to a planet's hot core (effectively exposing the core to the atmosphere).

Getting the right mixtures and pressures of gases could be achieved via genetically engineered plant-life, huge atmospheric processing facilities, or via a host of other methods.

Your comments on terraforming are spot on, but Serenity Firefly clearly states that all worlds have gravity normalized to 1G as part of the terraforming process, so that's included to keep the Firefly Traveller 'verse in compliance with the show.

As to inducing a magnetic field, I chose that for two reasons. First, it's clear that colonies are above ground in Firefly, so you need a magnetic field to protect the population. The idea of mining at the poles to induce it is purely speculative, but it answers a question raised in the future time line.

If it is a failure of Earth's magnetic field that forces an exidous, but you can induce a magentic field, then why can't you do it on the Earth? The answer is that it requires deep crust mining at the poles, and you can't do that on Earth because the North Pole is under water. It's total contrived, but it is a workable answer to get all the elements of the Firefly 'verse to fit together.

Oh God, were those books awful. I read them in 9th grade; ugh. Pages and pages describing exactly how big and how red the mountains on Mars are. So much decription...

But yeah, it is about terraforming.

I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, but since I'm new...

Are we sure there IS FTL in Firefly? The whole introduction blurb changed during the series - the early episodes clearly referred to the show as taking place in a "new solar system, with hundreds of planets" or something like that. As a researcher in electric propulsion, I found this fascinating - was Whedon actually positing the idea that there was some sort of nearby solar system with LOTS of planets, thereby eliminating the need for FTL for a long time?

Then they changed the intro blurb - it became "a new galaxy with hundreds of planets", or something like that. Which means he changed his mind, or else his technical consultant(s) explained the difference between a solar system and a galaxy.

Am I the only one who noticed this, and interpreted it that way? Please point me to an earlier discussion if you get a chance!

Sorry for the aside - you seem to be going with FTL. On THAT subject, I'd say I have to agree with Stutterwarp as the way to go. Regardless, the idea of taking a few days to a week to get to the destination fits well with Firefly.

The kind of system you're describing is called a rosette (not sure if that spelling is correct), or a ring of planets in the same orbit. That kind of system would be like a ringworld, probably requiring very advanced technology to create.

There have been discussions here on that subject (the last one was called "where does Firefly take place" I think). I think you could set that up as a background for Firefly Traveller, I just don't know how you could move humanity there in the next 500 years. It would be easy to set up using Heaven & Earth. All you would have to do is just input the UPTs for the individual planets and moons, rather than just generating entire star systems. It would also give you a lot more space on your ships, since you wouldn't need FTL drives.
