I was listening to the lastest ep of The Signal podcast, and there was a segment on Serenity art, done by Jason Palmer. The gist of it all was that Jason Palmer studios ( http://www.jasonpalmer.net/) has this very pricey, professional and smartly presented BDHs portraits. Decent stuff, but the thing is.... well, it wasn't to my liking, so to say. There's better stuff out there. I've seen better stuff HERE, to be honest. But that there's folks out there who are still cranking out high quality items has me wondering.... whose buying this stuff ?

What works do ya got, and how are you showing them? Are they in a photo album type book, or do you havce them mounted a wall ? Frame or frameless ?

I've mounted one movie poster on foam board, and have another, smaller one in a basic thin black frame. I'd love to have some prints of the BDH, but haven't really looked seriously. The Signal report, so flattering toward Mr Palmer's work, I wanted to go out and buy the damn things, items unseen. Don't buy into the hype. It's good, mind you, but I wasn't blown away. Yet it did reawaken in me a desire to have some beautiful works.

I guess no one has any Firefly / Serenity art of any kind, what so ever.

Huh.

Not sure if this is what your looking for, but I've done some CG compositions of the ol'girl that I have posted here. You can check them out on my profile page here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/showprofile.asp?un=Casivona

Also, I've seen many fine works on www.deviantart.com (some content may not be safe for work). Just run a serach for any Firefly related term on that site.

Not framed up yet, but I've cross-stitched my way through a couple of classic Jayne moments from Firefly:

1) Jaynestown - that 'pause' on Serenity's ramp.
2) Bushwacked - Jayne mindin' his mouth, for once.

Had a bash at weaving the immortal 'Chain of Command' quote as a linen band.

Don't know that it exactly qualifies as art, but in the spirit of novice knitters everywhere, plain-and-pearled my way to an out-of-sorts hot water bottle cover, in grungy brown, with the following knitted phrase - in bright orange - shrieking out from one side... 'I'll be in my Bunk'. Seemed appropriate! Highly unshiny, but very practical, and toes are happier all 'round.

What's next? Another linen band is being warped up - grey leaves (Serenity's colour) meandering against a dark blue background (space), with a little golden line down the edges. Symbolism of Wash's 'leaf on the wind'. Lettering takes a long, long time - maybe an hour/letter - so bypassing it should mean a faster project. On the other hand, I like quotes, there's something wonderful about weaving them, and I've got some sand/brown shades of linen, so maybe one of Mal's phrases may yet prove irresistible.

Er, nope. Hang on...

I'll take a few snaps and hang them up in the Blue Sun Room (graphics).

Enjoy!

Have you actually seen Jason's stuff up close?

I'll be perfectly honest, viewed online I actually agree that they don't look like they warrant the price, they did not all appeal to me at first. But actually having the set in front of you is something else. My opinion drastically changed from "yeah, they're nice enough" to "OMG, they're gorgeous!"

Art is very subjective of course and these won't be to everyone's taste and becuase they are genuinely limited edition prints, they 'aint cheap. But they are selling, even though they are "high end" stuff. Some individual prints are almost sold out now. But yeah, only buy what you like, not just because it has a Firefly or Serenity license.

Steve Anderson's prints from QMX for example, are a nice alternative if you want individual characters, though they are digital reworkings of screen shots or stills and not produced in the same manner as Jason's. But they look very good and are a lot more affordable. We interviewed Steve a while back as well. Nice guy.

11th Hour did some lovely stuff with Inara and Kaylee. (I have a few of the Art cards she did) And I've seen lots of other excellent fan art.

OK, what Firefly/Serenity art do I have? The JP prints obviously (and I like the fact the set is in a folder and they don't have to be mounted...mainly because I don't have the room!))

The Serenity Blueprints. Both full size and Reference pack versions. Stunning. 2 of the full size ones are framed on the wall of my living room. I also have all of the Serenity ship models on display there too.

The QMX Map of Serenity Valley. To my shame, still stored in it's tube awaiting a suitable frame. This really is a gorgeous bit of work. (And OK, I reviewed that too and raved about it, so sue me :-)

I ah...don't yet have *the* Map. Of the Verse. It's on my wish list (kinda have to buy that one really :-)

That's all at the moment. Space is a big issue. I'd love to have all 10 Blueprint sheets up, but it won't happen. The Map of the Verse, when I get one, is another problem that I'll have to try and solve because I really do want to display that one. It's beautiful.)

I'm glad Jason's work is selling. As I mentioned, from the description alone, I was about to fire off an order my own self. But then, as you say, art appreciation IS subjective. For stuff I really liked, I wasn't scared off by the price. I'll just eat like starving college student for the next 6 months.... no problem!

So, you wanna know why I'm NOT putting down my $$ for these clearly very fine works ?

* They look more like comic art, and less like portraits. Not that I don't care for comic art, but for all the hoopla, I'd just expect a more " professional / studio " feel. Doesn't mean the colors and texture aren't dazzling, just, my own likes/ dislikes.

* River - She looks more like Eliza / Faith than River.

* Book - The profile stance just 'feels' wrong. He's almost scowling, and what's with the cigar ? Did Book ever smoke a cigar ? Even if he did, it's not something I'd generally identify with him and his shepherd persona.

* Joss - His mouth looks funny. As in, off, not 'ha-ha' funny. Maybe it was rushed, who knows.

But I don't wanna only dis Jason's works. Inara and Kaylee look stunning. Zoe is damn fine as welll. The Operative is spot on , too.

Maybe I'm overly critical, but that's how I saw it.

STAPLES

I have Jason's print set, and I ordered it very early (before he was done with all the characters, back when I had the money to do so).

I love them immensely, but I agree that River has a little work to be done to look like River...

Anyway, what art have I made? I'm glad you asked...I can't take a picture of it, because it would be too small a file to do it justice.

I did a dry pastel drawing of my favorite shot in the whole series - River looking down at the "stick" in Objects in Space. It's about the size of a piece of tagboard, but it's not matted or framed yet - I'm hoping it will be for my bithday :) I am usually pretty critical of my own work, and I get a ton of praise for most of it, but I usually find big problems with a lot of it...but River is different. I am SO proud of the work I did on River. It's incredible.
