Good morning fellow browncoats

I’ve started a new thread and like all new threads (that I start) my goal is to gain insight into the FF/Serenity verse through questions, observation and opinions. I’m looking for your answers and opinion in reflection to my own. First let me say that when I get into something, I really get into it. A flaw of mine that my wife points out to me all the time and you know what? She is 100% correct. Anyway the characters of FF/Serenity intrigue me. They do this to a point where I want to break down each character and study them. My plan is to do that with each character in a different thread from time to time. I will first start with the “Man-ape gone wrong thing, Jayne.” I have noticed the thread “Why we women love Jayne” thread. Well my wife absolutely HATES Jayne. Ever since he’s done the evil deed to Simon and River on Ariel she can hardly stand to look at him. This leads to my questions and observations. The flaws of Jayne.

1) Has Jayne learned his lesson after his little confrontation with Mal after the Ariel eps?

2) Is he likely to stray again?

My Opinion, Jayne is about Jayne. Yep he has some good points but when it comes to the shiny stuff it’s all about how rich he can make himself in the verse.

An observation. Look how quickly he turned on his buddies in the OoG eps with just the promises Mal was making him.

3) Could Jayne ever become captain of Serenity?

4) What would he do if he did become rich?

5) Now that Crow is gone could Jayne ever become Niskas right-hand man?

6) Where do you see Jayne One month after the OiS eps?

I was just wondering about some of these.

Jayne “ I didn’t fight in no ruttin war. Best of luck to you though.”

I just notice on my ISP sign on page a little segment " Astronaut to do marathon in space" I was hoping it ment FF marathon

KAYNA

I love my captain

Ok, 1 and 2: Has he completely learned his lesson? No, I don't think so. Has he learned a lesson? Yes. You're right, when it comes down to it Jayne is mostly about Jayne but he's already changed from the man he was when he joined the crew of Serenity. Just look at what he did in War Stories. Not only did he give up his cut of the cash to try and get our boys back, (and money is something very dear to Mr. Cobbs heart) he then, of his own choice, went in on what he had already called a suicide misswion to free them. Do you think he even would have considered doing such a thing for any of his old "partners"?

And in the end of Ariel he was genuinely ashamed of what he'd done. He knew he wasn't getting back on the ship and that he was going to die. Knowing that he didn't want anyone to know what he had done. That's the only reason he's alive today. If he'd gone on rationalizing it Mal would've let him get sucked out of that hole.

Now do I think he's likely to stray in the future? Maybe but it won't be something on that scale. He also won't be selling anyone out to the Feds. If Jayne biggest concern is himself then he won't even think about it. He now knows he can't trust the feds to keep up thier end and there are at least three people on the ship who could likely do him damage and who's first suspect will be Jayne in any such situation.

As to the other questions you have, since my post is already a bit long I'm going to leave those alone for now except to say a great big NOto questions 3 and 5. Will elaborate later.

Op: You're fighting a war you've already lost.
Mal: Yeah, well I'm known for that.

CANTER

I think Jayne's character is the one that's changed the most since the beginning of the series.

It seems to me that "Ariel" was a turning point for him. After he owerpowered the guard, he gave Simon and River just a little look, before he undid their cuffs. He could have left them there. Yet he chose to help them escape.

In "Train Job" he was ready to leave Mal and Zoe behind. In "War stories" he went to get Mal, along with the others.

And what River saw in him in "Objects in Space" shows that he considered what he'd done as "stupid".

He was still struggling with his relationship with Simon and River in the BDM, and backslided a bit when he tried to take River on "a nice shuttle ride", but I believe he did that because he thought her presence there threatened the crew. Not for money. And in the end, he chose to fight with them.

He will never be able to be captain of Serenity, because he's not enough of a leader.

I can't ever see him working for Niska, since he's not cruel enough.

1) Has Jayne learned his lesson after his little confrontation with Mal after the Ariel eps?

I think so. I think he had to expand his view of what does and does not constitute loyalty to Mal, and how damn serious Mal takes the subject. I think he also found out looking a very ugly death straight on and true that he doesn't want to be a bad person, that he isn't okay with being a genuinely despicable guy, or remembered as one.

2) Is he likely to stray again? I bet he'll backslide. He's a pretty self-motivated guy, it seems, and it's likely helped keep him alive and get him wherever he is today. So I imagine the tendency to see things in a Jayne-first kind of fashion isn't going to go away. But I don't believe he'll cross that same line he seemed to draw for himself when he asked Mal not to tell anyone what had really happened on Ariel.

3) Could Jayne ever become captain of Serenity?

Become? Sure--under the right circumstances/treachery/fluke occurence. :) But could he perform the function for any length of time? I'm going to say not so much. He isn't cut out to be the captain kind of guy--he's more the hired gun/muscle kind of dude, in my opinion. I believe he'd give a good go, and probably go down in flames genuinely wondering why it hadn't worked out.

4) What would he do if he did become rich?

Lose most of it in a high-stakes tall-card game during a drunken Naughty Bad Fun weekend. But first he'd make sure his ma and Matty had everything they needed for the rest of their lives.

5) Now that Crow is gone could Jayne ever become Niskas right-hand man?

I don't think so, for two reasons, mainly.

First, Jayne seems to consider himself an alpha even if he isn't cut out to be one except in the Id-liest meaning of the word. I think he might run afoul of the old hwundan by trying to work a Jayne-first side venture behind his back at some point.

And second, I don't think he'd have the stomach for what it would require. Given his horror and disgust at the actions of Reavers, I don't think Niska's proclivities would sit any better with him than that. I'd like to think so, anyhow. Besides--I think being part of Mal's crew has given him a look at how cool it is to be part of something bigger and better than the lowest common denominator--which is what a job opportunity with Niska would amount to.

6) Where do you see Jayne One month after the OiS eps?

Still on Serenity, still pissing people off, still being himself. Maybe with more guns.

Cool questions!

:)

SHINYDS

Hey, those are some intresting questions. When I first saw the title of the thread, I thought to myself "Wow! I or some othere people I know have that!" Anyway, to the questions...
1) I would say..to a degree. I wouldn't count out him making another opportunistic move. However, when he goes to bed at night, on the rare occasions he practices hygine, he washses both his faces and then looks in the mirror, and probably thinks long and hard about how things could have been, if Mal hadn't been so forgiving. If he tries another stunt, it will be better disguised, because he knows now what he faces when Mal finds out. Plus, I feel that something (be it a seperate event, or maybe just his coming to terms with what happened on Ariel and on Bellerophon) happened to him and changed his perception, at least a little bit. In the BDM, for example, he did acknowledge the guts it takes for Simon to risk somuch for his sister, whereas before, he didn't really seem to give it a second though. Maybe on an adventure between OiS and the BDM, something happened? C close call that they seem so prone to having?

2) Very possible, but he has reason to rethink it. Usually, when he turns on someone, he comes out a t least a bit ahead, but this time not so much. For details, see #1.

3) No. Mal, though he gets his butt kicked and is losing a lot of the time, is usually 2 or 3 steps ahead of the competition, mentally. He doesn't like being caught with his pants down, and so is unlikely to fall before Jayne, who is more of a pawn to send into the explosions and gunfire. Should something happen to Mal, the crew respect him. They hold slightly (understated) lower opinions of Jayne. They wouldn't follow him as readily. As Siomon said, "I just didn't feel comfortable with him in charge."

4) Jayne, as we saw in Jayne's Town and Heart of Gold would probably enjoy the luxury of having some cashy-money to spend. I doubt he'd buy anything too high end with it, though. Maybe a new set of boots or ammo and upgrades for his guns, a freesh box of black, nasty, gritty cigars, and plenty of booze and women. However, Jayne likes his job. He seems to enjoy the thrill of clubbing someone unconscious or shooting them before they can shoot him. He'd enjoy the money and not having to risk his life for a while, but he'd get bored. Jayne's not quite ready for retirement just yet.

5) Jayne takes orders (ususually unhappily) from Mal. But I have a hard time seeing him working for a man who would "make meat pies out of the lot of us." When working for Mal, he gets held in line by Mal and his personality--to a degree anyway. But he also gets perks. With Niska, it would be only fear. That's all that would keep him at it day in and day out.

6) Still on Serenity helping them haul away and burry yet another unanticipated body in one of their escapades. He must have made a bit of profit on a job, for once, because he now cna afford grenades. The arguement with Mal about that must have been very amusing. Mal had a hard enough problem with some of Jayne's guns, fearing that they would puncture Serenity's hull. I can only imagine Jayne bringing up the idea of purchasing live explosives at their little family dinnertable.

Great survey. I'm looking forward to taking part in any others you do.

VERASAMUELS

1) Has Jayne learned his lesson after his little confrontation with Mal after the Ariel eps?

Yes, basically. Jayne crossed a line there. Saw that it had stayed crossed in the BDM.

2) Is he likely to stray again?

Might push Mal's - and other's - buttons. Might use the perceived ability to stray to the crew's advantage, to confuse some SOB who was trying to get a wedge in and 'turn' Jayne. Jayne might play along so as to take the SOB out later. But stray - no, IMO. Might go walkabout for a time on a solo job out of necessity, but I believe he knows where home is now.

3) Could Jayne ever become captain of Serenity?

Only if Mal was either completely incapacitated or dead. And Jayne would probably find out gorram quick that it's not as much fun as it looks from the outside.

4) What would he do if he did become rich?

Get laid, buy more guns, maybe a house somewhere. Very rich - fork out to support a personal whore/companion/lady of negotiable virtue in his bunk full time. Send a pile to his Ma.

5) Now that Crow is gone could Jayne ever become Niskas right-hand man?

Jayne would rip Niska's heart out with his teeth .

6) Where do you see Jayne One month after the OiS eps?

Probably getting laid and shooting stuff as per normal .
