So I was kinda bored, and was wondering why none of the computers or ships seem to have artificial intelligence. I know such a unit may be expensive in the future (if processor speeds continue at the rate they are, it really wouldn’t be expensive, but who knows what will happen) but there weren’t any obvious signs of them in any alliance facility/ship...
Do we think they were outlawed?

Only saw Serenity once and there is a brief add-on A.I. along with Mr. Universe, but I seem to recall no real AI or robotics and such in the series.

Seems like there's a might bit of 'organicentric' prejudice. You makes a good point.

In fact, I don't seem to recall any Mr. Universe mentioned either, untill the movie.

I'm having a similar discussion on another thread:
the TV show was unfinished,
a whole lot was supposed to happen that we never learned about because we never heard most of the stories there were to be told...

Joss said he didn't want aliens,
he never said there wouldn't be robots, androids, clones, and all manner of other sci-fi goodies that he never got to mention because the canceled his show(!)

chances are, the fact that there was no AI on board the ship only means that Mal doesn't like having them around personally, or that Mal can't afford to have them around (it isn't like he is a rich man with a rich man's toys)

So I would take the movie as a sign that there is more to this universe than had appeared on the first few episodes of a canceled TV show

and I fully expect that we will (eventually) get to learn what they are....

STARPILOTGRAINGER

The only full Artificial Intelligences in the Firefly verse are the property of Blue Sun (what's lesser known is that Blue Sun is also run by an AI). Eventually, had the series continued, the Firefly crew would have accidentally 'rescued' one during an operation and it would become part of the crew.

Well, no, I just made that up. But I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that wound up being the case if the series had continued.

Where is the thread your're having this discussion?

I realize the show was cancelled early, but there's been plenty of opportunity (I think) to show, or even just hint at, the existence of AI or some kind of robotics even with just 14 episodes and a movie.

There have been a number of other spacecraft and starbases/space stations, multiple planetary environments, etc, revealed.

If the story takes place 500 years or so into the future, I'm sure that AI must have been extremely sophisticated by that point. Either that or something stopped technological progress and research in this area or it was banned or made illegal, or as you say it could be just too expensive for regular folk.

Seems also that there may be some form of class structure existing in the Firefly universe, which could explain why so many folk in the stories, ie: colonists, etc, prefer a 'western frontier' approach to building their towns and societies and living their lives.
Perhaps there is a little bit of luddite sentiment in many folks at this time: a bitter distrust of technology in general with close associations being too close to the alliance.

I can rationalize all that, sure, and I hope I'm on the money too cause the show, what little there is of it, is quality stuff. I'd like to see more of an explanation or hinting at what happened to 'technological progress' as WE know it.

It does seem strangely absent despite the spaceships and odd thing here and there. And strangely the characters seem oddly disinterested in all things tech.

I'm sorry, I did not mean another thread about AI
I meant another thread about the fact that there is a world of stuff that Joss was planning to get to if 'Firefly' had continued which he never even had a chance to hint at in the show before it was canceled:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=4&t=14126

I'm thinking we didn't spend any time on the richest planets (Londinium might be crawling with all kinds of robots and androids, making life easy for the rich and keeping everything all sanitized and clean...)
most in 'Firefly' we visited the poor planets where folks couldn't afford much anything that was battery operated...

I'm still hoping for the sequel (eventually) and a lot more comic books

actually I would love some kind of spin off TV show
