For everybody who was interested in this subject before, there's a new livejournal post from the wonderful Akin about the current situation.

It seems that the owner is now willing to sell, and there's a discussion on how to get the money and what to do with it once we get it.

I put up an update about why I didn't reveal the actual dollar amount... http://www.livejournal.com/users/akin/211071.html

I'm hoping someone in the fan community has better organizational skills than I do...

That reasoning makes sense to me! It'd be great to start a group to try and get the money together. I'm not entirely sure what to do with it, either, but here are some ideas (some of which have already been mentioned elsewhere):

Firefly/Serenity Museum; Whedon Museum; some other topic Museum: This could be a little roadside museum somewhere, so long as it didn't have many expenses. The small Mom and Pop museums may not be all the rage like they used to be, but neither are they dead.

One of the Browncoat organizations (I'm thinking of a larger one here like SF) could use it like a mascot at the bigger cons. (Storage again, being an issue.)

Movie Memorabilia Museum that already exists: If the group could come up with the money for it, there might be a general film making museum that would do a standing exhibit. Serenity is one of the great stories about how a movie can get made with determination ala Rocky, so it could be worthy of a spot in the greater hall of fame.

About how large is it in real life? I've seen the images, but not having met Akin I'm not sure how tall he is. :)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Shiny!

Put me down to help out in any way I can w/ the rescue efforts of the ambulance. Money, time, etc. I will do all I can.

So who is spearheading this effort? Akin?

Well, if we donated it to http://www.sfhomeworld.org/ I would kick in a few bucks.

Wonderful! Got a friend [aquaintance, actually - met him at a con last month] who's trying to track down SF movie and TV props for preservation - he's already planning the 'open to the public' historic display area he wants to set stuff up in. I'm going to see if I can track down his contact info. He'd *love* this!

Awesome RemCat! Let us know what you find out. If I had even a hint of space to keep this thing, I'd so offer it up. As it is with a condo, we don't even have a patio!

I know it's only been over the weekend, but I thought I'd check on this to see if there's been any news on this front?
