Hi,
I'm a newbie and a long time lurker but ran into something I wasn't sure you guys had heard. There is a folk group called Escape Key who have a song about the Captain using the theme song as the chorus. I can't get it out of my head:
http://www.cyphertext.net/escapekey/songs.html
just scroll down a bit, it's called Mal's song, if this has been posted earlier please ignore this.

This is quite impressive. Wonderful vocals and certainly worth the download. Here is a direct link for anyone who wants it:

Oh holy cow!

I had no idea people were listening to our music until I had the following conversation:

My husband (wearing a huge grin): Dear, I figured out why our net connection is so slow.
Me: Why?
Him: A link to Mal's Song has been posted on a Firefly fan site.
Me: You mean...
Him: ...yep. We're being slashdotted.

Thank you all *so much* for your kind response. I hoped people would like the song, but I never expected so many people to hear it. This is *wonderful*!

It'll be unavailable for an hour or so while my husband (the guitar player) creates a torrent for it, so that people can still download it without breaking our poor little server's head. So if you're still trying to get it, bear with us; it'll be back up very soon and I'll post a new link for it to this thread.

Oh, and I hope to have a better recording of it on our next CD. (Yeah... I even have fantasies of sending it to Joss. I'm too chicken, though.)

Wow. Just... wow!

Wo de ma!

Here's the new link to the torrent file:
http://www.cyphertext.net/escapekey/Mal_live.mp3.torrent

The mp3 link will no longer work, and our page will have the torrent link instead, because our server just can't handle the traffic otherwise.

Thank you again, everyone!

This is fantastic, Michelle! You have a beautiful voice, and I love listening to your lyrics. The quotes from the episodes are like little easter eggs for the fans! I hope that you'll send this song to Joss. I don't doubt he'll love it!

Fingers crossed for the safety of your server. This baby is going to circulate like... well, all the analogies that just came to mind were either venereal diseases in humorous locales or the Bubonic Plague, neither of which I'd like to equate with your song. Um... it'll circulate around the fandom like the video of the fat kid singing "Numa Numa"? Okay, I fail at similies. Great song, though. I'm off to plug your site in my blog!

Michelle, you should totally send it to Joss. The chorus sounds similar to his original version on the DVD. It's very good. I've been listening to it over and over. I love it! I'm sure Joss would be flattered and impressed.

The chorus IS his original version on the show. Stolen wholesale. :) As I commonly introduce it in concert: the TV theme song just really sounded to me like a chorus in search of some verses. So I wrote some.

That's one of the reasons I'm kinda nervous about ever sending it. But a girl can dream... :)

Mal's song was fantastic. Someone once asked Joss (at a conf I think) if there would be a longer version of the theme song and if there is going to be a soundtrack. I see the realisation of one and the potential for the other right here!

Michelle, perhaps what you could do with Joss is offer to write a whole "inspired by the show" kind of album or, dare I say it, contribute whole songs to the actual soundtrack of any future Serenity production. Makes a nice companion piece to any collection of Firefly related disks and might even help spread the word of the show through song. And it'll sell like hotcakes if the quality of that single track is any indication.

And how about a cover or reinvention of the Hero of Canton? :)

Gorgeous song, I stayed up late to download it (compy was being stupid) and I'm glad I went to sleep with it playing through my head. ^_^ It's perfect for Mal, and kind of gives the theme an even stronger meaning. I second those people telling you to send it to Joss, I'm sure he'd be thrilled.

You need to right click the link, and the "save link as" to wherever you like. When it downloads, it should play over whatever your default MP3 program is... Quicktime, Realplayer, WM, MusicMatch, iTunes, etc. Otherwise, just select whatever one of those style programs pops up in the window whem you click the filename.

When I do that, it asks me which program to open it with. I've tried both Windows Media Player and Real Player, and both say they do not have the software to support it. There must be something tricky about these torrent files, or there is the obvious - I'm absolutely computer stupid!!

Ah... that's the rub. BitTorrent is bad, at least for people like me that love using my workplace's cable connection, but have old crappy Macs that I wouldn't trust to run Torrent, plus the whole my boss kicking my @$$ for piracy....
My method works for the direct MP3 download, which you can get at the mirror sites that have been posted here or by zeigeist at whedonesque.com....

I have a feeling the file Anfa is dealing with is the .torrent file, which will only work if you have bittorrent installed.

For those who are not bittorrent-savvy, I'd highly recommend getting the .mp3 file from someone via e-mail or the mirror mentioned above.

Oh, by the way: exceptionally awesome song. Many thanks for the wonderful tune and the wonderful voice.

I downloaded this and put it on a CD to take to a friend of mine. I didn't tell him what it was. Just had him play it. About half way through it he turned to me and asked if this was something from the BDM. That shows he thought it was something profesionally done for the movie. That's how good it is, Vixy. You have to send it to Josh while there's still time to maybe get it in the movie.
