WELL, many prefer to place the Enlightenment earlier, but by so doing you separate the Enlightenment dorm itself. The Enlightenment, after all, was never intended to be simply intellectual and philosophical. The Enlightenment was based around central goals and tenets even early on.

Rousseu, for example, clearly advocated for the abolition of the present society and Christianity's dominance.

Which is largely why Americas Founders weren't really products of the Enlightenment. They followed the same philosophers whose ideas became the basis of the Enlightenment, but where not themselves part of it.

It would be a mistake to think of John Locke, himself a Christian, as advocating the abolition of Christendom in favour of naturalistic reason and a romantisised view of Roman and Greek pagan thought.

John Locke was the principle inspiration for the American Founders, and the common ideal they all developed their Republicanism around.

Besides, all of the US Founders also tended to use the Scriptures as inspiration, including Thomas Paine. Paine was a Deist who rejected Christianity, but he didn't think, as most Modern militant Atheists do today, that the bible had absolutely no value at all. ( I said Militant Atheists guys, I know not all Atheists are of the Richard Dawkins/Sam Harris/Christopher Hitchens mould.)

Paine was, of course, the only Deist of the lot. Jefferson is reputed to be a Deist, and this claim is oft-toted on the net,but he openly declared himself a Christian in his writings and never expressed Deism. He was more what we'd call a Liberal Christian these days, though his beliefs do not concord with the modern Liberal Christianity. (Or Modern Evangelist's, or modern anything.)

Franklin was a Deist in his younger days but had abandoned that by his mid thirties, and returned to some form of nonconformist Christianity.

Still, I digress.

My point is, the US founders where principly driven by Locke and others speculating on a Republican form of Government, and the general principles of individual liberty.

This contrasts with the Enlightenment, in that the US founders did not actively seek to abolish Christianity or eliminate its influence in society, but rater thought men could decide for themselves how much a role it should play in public life. (Unlike today here we try to make it illegal for it to have any public role.)

This isn't the only place they diverged either. They didn't wan tot restructure all of society to fit the ideals of "Natural reason" as did the Enlightenment, didn't want a uniform society dedicated to th new cause, and didn't seek to implement a society based on communal rights.

The US Founders where very much about land ownership, individual sovereignty, and libertarian principles which would be seen as contrary tot he Enlightenment. Though, closer tot he Enlightenments ideals where they than to the old order with Monarchs and Aristocrats, and they where seen as Brothers-in-arms in the new ideology that would change the globe.

Its just not accurate to think of them sharing the same goals as the Enlightenment though. Not in full anyway. Its as much a mistake as thinking of Mussolini and Hitler as having the same goal. There was overlap between the Fascists of Italy and the National Socialists of Germany, but they weren't agreed on all points.

EDIT:

In fact, most of Americas Founders also opposed the French Revolution. Only Paine, who in fact participated in the Revolution in France, and Jefferson, who was himself rebellious and anti-monarchy, aligned with the French Revolutionary cause and actually supported it and what it stood for.

Madison, Washington, Adams, and Franklin all condemned the French Revolution, and the others wrote rather disparagingly of it.
