"A South African preacher baptised a thoroughbred racehorse called "Running Reverend" in front of his congregation in a controversial bid to raise church funds.

Members of St. Peter's Congregational Church watched as Reverend Deric Derbyshire splashed the horse's forehead with water at the Villa Felix stud farm outside the southeastern coast city of Port Elizabeth.

"The Lord's hand is definitively on this horse..."

But did the horse WANT to be baptized is the question. How do they know he's not a pagen?

Why controversial? The Blessing of the Animals has been a tradition (in the Roman Catholic Church, at least) for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. Started out as a pagan rite to protect the herd from disease/curse/general misfortune, then got usurped by the Church when they grabbed the spiritual monopoly. Eventually, the farmer's "herd" ended up including the chickens, fish in the pond, the mouser in the barn, the hunting hound, and so on (today it usually applies to childrens' pets).

Granted, the usual time to do it is the feast of St. Francis (patron saint of animals and animal lovers), but hey, if you've got a horse, holy water, and a preacher, you're good to go.

You know that people are obsessed for Serenity when they start making the most remote connections to characters in Firefly.

And then they discuss it.

And here I am posting this obervation, proving my own obsession.

CHANNAIN

i DO aim to misbehave

I'm thinking that if all dogs go to heaven, then all horses would be walking right on in with them. A horse can be every bit as devoted as a dog, but that devotion is more valuable because horses ahve to chooses who they listen to... with the right training, of course

Which means that the OWNER was the one more worried about Running Reverend's soul than the horse. Now if he thought Running Rev needed an extra boost of spirituality, what does that say about the owner's faith Rev's chances to win?

Tash, you find the most entertaining subjects to get us to scratching our heads about, you know that? Bless you!

Fans come and fans go...but zealots are with you until the bitter black end.
I draw...therefore I am.
