Is anyone familiar with a series that aired in 1960 called "The Westerner"? My dad told me about it when I turned him on to Firefly. It (The Westerner) only lasted 13 episodes, mostly because (according to dad) it was just too sophisticated and clever to appeal to the masses. Sound Familiar? Anyway, he normally doesn't watch S.F. at all, but Firefly really appealed to him, and he commented many times on the thematic and stylistic similarities to The Westerner. I'd love to know whether J.W. was familiar with the old show and whether it was an influence.

Odd note: while researching The Westerner I found out that one of the writers was named Brian Gellar (who worked later on Mission: Impossible I think). Anyone know of a relation to the star of J.W.'s "Buffy"?

I used to watch The Westerner, but I don't have a very good memory of it. I do know that Sam Peckinpah, later director of Ride the High Country and The Wild Bunch, created the show. It starred Brian Keith, always a favorite of mine, and he had a dog as his travel companion.

The person who produced Mission: Impossible was named Bruce Geller, and since the spelling is different, I doubt that he's any relation to Sarah Michelle.

Thanks for the Geller/Gellar clarification, Cardie. =) And it is Bruce Geller I was thinking of who created M:I and who was a writer on The Westerner.
