Alternate casting and auditions?

We all know that Rebecca Gayheart was originally cast as Inara, and there are many stories about who auditioned for what role on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, but what might an alternate FIREFLY have looked like -- not based on speculation, but based on reality-based near-misses?

I cannot substantiate most of this beyond "I'm pretty sure I read it in the forums here...", but:

1) Some sources note that the part of Mal was originally written with Nicholas Brendon in mind (and that Joss thought the show would start after BtVS wrapped).

2) Neal McDonough auditioned for the role of Mal and while Nathan Fillion was always the frontrunner, McDonough was the only other actor given serious consideration.

3) Neil Patrick Harris auditioned for Simon.

4) Miracle Laurie was Whedon's original preference for Kaylee, but the network nixed her.

The idea of a FIREFLY starring, say, Nicholas Brendon, Rebecca Gayheart, Miracle Laurie and NPH intrigues me, at least a little.

Anyone know of any other auditions, etc?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'd heard of all of those except for Miracle Laurie. Considering her first TV role wasn't until two years after Firefly, where would Joss have seen her? I suppose theater is the most likely, but details on that would be nice.

Who else was up for Jayne?

With Gayheart and NPH (is that redundant?) I would have likely never bothered watching.

The way I heard the Miracle Laurie story is that she was Joss's first choice, but the network nixed her because she wasn't thin enough. Joss "retaliated" by casting Jewel Staite, but requiring that she gain weight.

All of which is ridiculous, because both of them are beautiful and their weight should not be a factor in either case.
