SCHISM

Has anyone read this?
The not-so-official-cos-it-was-canceled-by-Joss Whedon novel written by Steven Brust?

I just finished it.

I give it a resounding 'meh'.

Story-wise it was okay, but I don't like how he handled Jayne.
Sure we know he's not trustworthy, he quit the ship waaay too easily for something trivial, and turned all traitorish as a result, to the point where realistically I don't think any of the crew would be able to even trust him at all.

An emo-captain is a bit disconcerting.

And this guy's writing style...I'm surprised he's a published author.

"Okay," Mal said.
"Really?" Zoe said.
"Are you sure?" Simon said.
"No way!" Jayne said.

He said.
She said.
They said.

There's no flourish to it, it's just standard static 'he said, she said'.

It's like it was written by a twelve year old!

Anyway, it's one of those things that has you addicted enough to read the entire thing, but when you're done you think "....why did I read that?".

NOT a story i'd be in a rush to see turned into an episode.

The lack of the Shepherd and Inara is definetely felt, btw.

STAPLES

I never finished it. It was okay for what it was, but halfway through I found out that Joss canceled it because he didn't want other people touching his 'verse. He still has plans for his own stuff. He didn't want other people destroying his characters. That's when I stopped reading. It had some cool stuff in it, but it definitely wasn't condoned by Joss, and you can tell.

And btw, he just pretty much writes crappy sci-fi novels - not much imagination there... I like sci-fi novels, but sometimes I read them and realise that no one really gives a crap about how much care is put into them, they just publish them anyway. It's kinda stupid.

KATESFRIEND

There has always been a wealth of good authors in the Blue Sun Room. Though it's not professionally written, at least it was all created by fans who had love for the show and the characters at heart. And some of it is much better than professional.
