Universal only supports HD-DVD right now, unless HD-DVD fails and Blu-Ray wins out it won't happen and I think it will not happen at all. I think that they might release a disc that has both on it or you should buy the LG multi-blue DVD player (which plays both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. http://us.lge.com/products/model/detail/tv|audio|video_digital%20video

I hope that helps. Blu-Ray isn't dominating right now. The number of discs being sold are closer (and not nearly high enough) than either company would like. The both might lose out to digital downloads or some new format. I have HD-DVD and I think that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is not worth the money at this time but Blu-Ray is winning.

Disney, Sony pictures and Apple Comuters only support Blu-Ray right now.

Microsoft (not a selling point in my opinion) and I think New Line supports HD-DVD only.

Warner Bros. and HBO support both (I think their might be more but that is all I know of now.)

Warner Brothers has come up with a dual format disc compatible with both. Named "Total HD". This may be the way they all go in future. …along with the Dual format players from LG and Samsung.

However, it is not quite clear when this will pan out. Depending on any contractual obligations, I doubt Universal will start producing them (or jump ship) until it is certain how the Dual "players" are received by the marketplace.

I personally hope HD-DVD succeeds over Sony, because I'm tired of Sony bullying the market with their products...beta, mini-disc, memory stick, etc. Why can't they just agree on a common ground like everyone else?

Actually, Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD at more than 2:1 now. And it has a lot more studio backing now.

Also, the Digitalbits posted a list today of all the big movies for the rest of the year, and over half were Blu-Ray only, with only two or three being HD-DVD exclusive (the remainder being available on both).

Please forgive the techno-flubs I am about to commit.

I had this discussion with hubby just last night. He and I both feel that since Sony is going Blu-Ray, and with all those Microsoft compatible computers out there, that HD DVD will win out. Despite that, we do have a PS3 in the house with Casino Royale totally rocking my socks off.

Hubby mentioned that buying a standalone HD DVD player will not be a smart move because the processor in it will not be able to compete with the processor inside the XBox360 that we already own. So he will be buying the HD drive to add onto the XBox360.

During much of this conversation, I just nodded and smiled. LOL I understood most of it, but please forgive me that I cannot remember the correct terms for things. I've only seen the Blu-Ray movies so far and am really looking forward to seeing Serenity in HD.

Disney, Fox and Sony Pictures are exclusive to Blu-Ray, and will stay that way.

The only HD-DVD exclusive studio is Universal, but there are already hints that if Blu-Ray keeps expanding its lead, they may go neutral in 2008, and produce discs for both formats.

All the other studios produce discs for both formats.

-6178403.html So the sales are better for Blu-ray lately but it really isn't that good at all. Considering that one regular DVD sells more than any High Def has to date.

"From January 1-March 31, consumers bought almost 1.2 million high-definition discs--832,530 Blu-ray units and 359,300 HD DVDs--according to Home Media Magazine. In March, consumers bought 335,980 Blu-ray Discs and 119,570 HD DVDs.

Since the high-def format's inception--HD DVD launched in April 2006, while Blu-ray got rolling two months later--more than 2.14 million discs have been purchased by consumers: 1.2 million Blu-ray Discs and about 937,500 HD DVDs."

Sony vs. Microsoft isn't important, Microsoft isn't bundling an HD-DVD drive with every copy of Windows so it doesn't really matter how many computers run Windows. Blu-ray drives and HD-DVD drives are both equally compatible with Windows as well.

A stand-alone player will have sufficient power to play any video that comes out on the format, the only possible issue would be if the format gets changed after you buy the player. Typically when a disc is unplayable on a set-top player it is because of copyright protection, not power. That being said if you already have a powerful computer or Xbox 360 then you might as well grab the 360 HD-DVD drive as it is cheaper than any other HD-DVD player.
