I have been trying to spread the gospel that is Firefly and, as with all gospels, have started with family first. Although my brother didn't like Mal at first, he says that Mal has grown on him and has settled into the verse. Now, perceptive viewer that he is, he asked a question that one or many of you might be able to help with.

If the Chinese were the other "superpower" such that chinese is the other language of choice then it stands to reason that there might be more Chinese people running around the verse. Why are there not more prominent Chinese around?

If Joss answered this at some point or maybe the answer exists in some form on this or any other site please let me know.

I don't think there's an answer. At least not a plot answer. There just... weren't Chinese people. I don't know. One reason: several hundred years without racism means more interracial relationships, means more "mixed" (excuse the term if it's offensive) children. After a few generations, all the people will look, well, like a mixture. So there's no one you can look at and go: "Asian" or "White". Because everybody's just a mix of both.

Also, some people say it's racist casting.

Or an oversight.

I think you just need to look harder. While their are not to many asian speaking roles for whatever reason, there are quite a few in background and crowd shots.

I think mostly the Chinese live on Sihnon and have stayed on that world. Some have spread out but most prefer to stay on that world. Where the Londinum was the stronger force behind terrafroming in the 'Verse and also were the man more of their people the indentured labor force to do that work. Also we aren’t seeing a wide view of the ‘Verse we have only seen about 13 hours from the crew of Serenity's point of view.

A big theory is that there's more Chinese in the Core, particulartly Sihnon. According to Joss's own writing, that was where the Chinese "half" of the population settled.
But yes, there is also the racial mixing thing. Simon and River's last name is Tam and yet they both look only vaguely asian.
And there are quite a few asian extras.... Um....

If the Firefly series plays in china are the chinese curse words replaced with english?
