Boynton Beach is a nice area, I used to work up there and have friends up there. But Palm Beach county is a bit more expensive than Broward County (Fort Lauderdale area). If you are looking for a great area for your own family (ie if you have kids for example) I'd highly recommend the Coconut Creek or Coral Springs areas in northwest Broward. They are near the expressway making the trip to Boynton pretty easy and are mostly low-crime, high family oriented areas with decent schools.

Far as job hunting, it is kind of hard to beat things like www.monster.com. There are a ton of listings from companies in this area. Don't know exactly what you mean by "friendly to someone who isn't entirely mainstream". But for the most part South Florida is a huge mix of various races, social standings, income brackets, ages, occupations, etc. There are rather few people that are "from South Florida". Most everyone came here from somewhere else. So there is quite a mix.

What kind of jobs are you interested in ?

I'm single, so kids aren't an issue. I have no desire to live in Palm Beach county. As far as being non-mainstream, I'm a GLBTI-rights (I'm openly bi and tend to identify as queer, and I have a lot of queer/trans/etc friends) and disability-rights activist (my back was pretty damaged for a while, and I learned a great deal about how our society sucks at dealing with people with disabilities), and I tend to hang out with some very interesting people. I don't tend to stand out in a crowd by myself, but when my friends visit, that all changes. I have no desire to go back into the closet.

I've left an eighteen-year career as a software developer for large corporations. I'd love to get a job as a technical writer, or in a non-profit group that advocates for causes I believe in.

I made money working for large corporations. In the last few years, it made me miserable. Now I want a career that I enjoy, that allows me to make a decent living without sapping my soul.
