Does anybody out there know how to utilize these emoticons? I'm practically computer illiterate. Please help. You are all free to laugh at my ignorance.

Everyone here was computer illiterate at one time. I've never used emoticons myself but believe you just copy and paste (or type) the name of the emoticon preceded AND followed by a colon with no spaces. (exactly as shown in the "emoticons" list.) If I type a colon then the word smile followed by another colon I should get a smiley.
