Ok, I'm curious, has fox ever explained why they screwed up the ordering of the episodes?

Did they ever make an official statement?

Did they air the episodes out of order on purpose?

If so, why?

If not, how did they explain the mistake?

Yo, sparky.

As interesting as the question is, you might want to use spoiler tags. People are still "going to" go see Serenity y'know.

i think i my have the answer of why fox did the episodes in the wrong order. fox started the series with the "train job" because they felt that the piolt of the origninal first ep called "serenity" did not have enough action in it. the source for this is on the firefly dvd special features. i think joss said something about this.

Yes, but that wasn't all they screened out of order... I'm off to look for details.

thx for the info - sorry bout the spoiler shoulda thought about that. Have edited post.

What a terrible decision to make. Sometimes I wonder at the cognitive processes that go on in these people's minds. I'd really like to sit one down and just have a good grill session.

I feel the same way about the people who write the script for movies like the last few bond movies - what in the name of holy iguana were they thinking...

I doubt they even have an explanation.

"Grab an episode at random and air it" seems to go on at most networks on the planet, with childrens TV and so called "minority interest" programs being the worst effected.
If its a prestige program or sport then it will be treated with respect, anything else is fair game to be `ed on.

This is why DVD`s and downloading will eventually kill off broadcast television.

None of you watched Futurama on Fox, I take it? They screwed up the ordering of that show even more, eventually making a fake "fifth" airing season out of all the episodes they'd failed to air from the 4 actual production seasons.

Fox have no concept of shows with story arcs.

Four seasons, five McSeasons, I believe is the term. Anyways, down here in the land of Oz both series' were featured on Channel 7, who put it on at an ungodly hour, so I wouldn't know what order they aired them in.

At least they weren't on Channel Nine, who wouldn't have put them on anyway. Which reminds me, has Voyager finished airing yet?

Yeah they do. "Must use brain? Bad, bad!" and "If our viewers start thinking, they'll start watching other networks!" seem to be the popular schools of thought.

I know EXACTLY what you mean! In South Australia here, and I've nicknamed Channel Nine Channel NEIN for its policy of buying ALL Sci-Fi (barring Futurama and Firefly - Seven jumped in, thank GOD) and never airing it, or the ones they did, completely arse about!

And they wonder why a lot of us DivX/XviD and Bittorrent shows. PAH!

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I believe there are several factors that led to the decisions Fox made in regard to episode order, and my opinion on one of them might not be that popular around here.

First off, yes they did think that "Serenity" (the pilot episode) was a bit slow and needed more action and humor, and they felt Mal was portrayed too dark and moody. But another factor in their decision to order "The Train Job" might have been that they wanted a one-hour pilot so they could premiere both Firefly and John Doe on the same night.

It is my opinion that after the low ratings for both "The Train Job" and "Bushwhacked" Fox decided to go with "Our Mrs. Reynolds" as the third episode, skipping over "Shindig" and "Safe." That might not have been a wise decision in the context of plot arc and character development, but I'm sure the Fox execs felt the humor, action (and sexual innuendo) in OMR was more likely to generate a favorable response than the other two eps.

There's another thing about the shows original run, that while not specifically addressed by the question in this thread, I would like to mention because it has been erroneously reported by many people at different times over the past three years. Some have said they had a hard time figuring out when it was going to be on because Fox kept changing it's schedule, but in point of fact Firefly always ran on Friday nights at 8pm Eastern time. Not the greatest time slot to be sure, and it was pre-empted several times for sports or holiday specials, once two weeks in a row. I am sure a lot of people thought it had already been canceled weeks before the actual fact, but Fox never moved it to another night.

You're quite correct. In point of fact, I was one of those fans who thought it had been cancelled before it actually was, and in consequence missed a couple of first-run eps.

Of course, the fact that it was never moved in the schedule hardly excuses the networks' choice of a Friday 8:00PM time slot in the first place. Why would anyone schedule a show to run in the one time slot its target audience was least likely to be watching television?

I know a number of lifelong science fiction fans (who are now rabid Browncoats) who never even knew that Firefly existed until I lent them DVD #1 from my set, more than a year after the show was cancelled. They simply never watched any TV on Friday evenings.
