Thank you.

Two weeks ago, I regarded serenity as a state of mind, and a firefly as an insect with a bioluminescent fundament. But for you, the long-time fans of Firefly, that would not have changed. Last weekend I went to see Serenity in the theater, and on Monday I bought the series on DVD.

I really appreciate the fact that the fanbase has breathed enough life into this franchise to keep it around for me to become aware of, despite the almost complete lack of interest, advertising or support from the studios. For those of you who are keepin' on keeping on, I have a suggestion for how to direct your efforts:

Talk to theater management.

The longer Serenity remains on the big screen, the greater likelihood that there will be more to come. It is therefore in everyone's best interest to discuss the issue with theater managers whenever, wherever possible to communicate to them that you are still participating in this "viral marketing" endeavor, still spreading the word, still trying to make up for the fact that this movie, like the Firefly television series, has been Hollywood's red-headed stepchild.

If possible, get fax numbers for the cinemas in your area and the names of general managers, send faxes to their attention requesting that they hang on to Serenity as long as possible to allow you to spread the word. Remind them that the "hype" for Serenity, outside of the Firefly fan base, began with its release, instead of a year or more before hand, and that more people are hearing about the film for the first time every day.

Hollywood is altogether detached from reality, still clinging to the delusion that all sci-fi fans are essentially Trekkies. To focus on the studios is likely to only bring frustration, anger, and umbrage. Focus instead locally, where the decisions are made as to what put on the screen.
