Hey there, I'm just sitting at home and listening to the Handsome Family right now. Anyone else a fan of this quirky alt country band?

Anyway it just struck me that their style has so much in common with the 'Ballad of Serenity', or at least the elements that makes it stand out. Just as the ballad mythifies sci-fi and space travel with lines like 'take me out into the black', The Handsome Family's gothic influences do the same in their folk stories about life and death. It too has quirky musical instruments (washboards, kazoos etc), combined with some really beautiful, surreal, dark songs filled with morbid poetry and black humour.

Just though that fans of Firefly (and its ecclectic take on country/folk in particular) might enjoy their music. I recommend the 'Through the Trees' album as a good starting point.
