Firefly Summary

Begin 500 plus a few years in the future. Humans have left Earth (which has likely been destroyed or become uninhabitable) to explore the vast array of space, colonizing planets. As today, there are “metropolitan” core planets/systems and “country” under developed outer area planets/systems. The outer systems independents waged war with the core system over “unification.” In the end, the independents lost.

Serenity is a spaceship, Firefly class, captained by a man who fought as a sergeant for the Independents. He now captains a ragtag crew with a few quirky civilians on his ship as they navigate in a post-war society. They make a living by running transport and shipping jobs, legal or illegal depending on what’s available, often leading to adventures.

Malcolm Reynolds- the captain of Serenity, who lost his faith in just about everything when the Independents surrendered in the war. He runs a tight ship, sometimes crushingly tight, but has no greater love than for Serenity, his wings to freedom.

Zoe- Zoe is the captains First Mate, who also fought with Malcolm in the war. Very much an “amazon woman” Zoe is the main defender of Serenity. She also married the ships pilot.

Wash- Wash is a genius pilot who loves large printed shirts and using sarcasm and self-deprecation to make up for his physical fighting skills and experience. He married Zoe.

Kayleigh- Kayleigh hails from an outer rim planet with an innate genius talent for mechanics and has a close bond with Serenity. Kayleighs childlike enjoyment of life and innocence of the world is only underscored by the fact that her first experience with Serenity was in having sex with the ship’s first inept mechanic in the engine room.

Jayne- A girl’s name, but Jayne’s not a girl. He is a mercenary that Malcolm and Zoe recruited as Jayne tried to steal one of their jobs. Jayne has no mental filters on what he says and thinks, though what he says and thinks is generally not that impressive. Jayne is loyal to a steady paycheck and requires strict watching to keep him in line.

Inara- Inara is what is known as a Companion, the closest to what we know as a courtesan. Prostitution is legal in this future and some are raised and trained in Academies to become professional registered Companions. Due to their high social status, Inara actually has the most social clout and respectability of anyone on the ship. Inara has a mysterious past and it is unsure exactly why she turned away from a promising rich career to fly with Serenity. Inara also has strong feelings for Malcolm but both her and Malcolm’s stubbornness refuse to allow them to be open to eachother.

Shepherd Book- Book joined Serenity when they stopped to take on passengers for money. Claiming to be a preacher on a journey out into the world, Book chooses to stay with Serenity and become part of the group. Book however has knowledge and skill of tactics and warfare far beyond what would be expected of an ordinary Shepherd as well as a high level of security clearance.

Simon- Simon hails from a core planet, from a very rich and respectable family. Simon is a genius and a doctor. He gave up everything to help his sister River, who was being kept by an unknown facility who were doing experiments on her brain. Simon joined Serenity as he was trying to escape with River. Simon stays on the ship as the doctor, as a way to be protected from being captured and having River sent back. Simon finds himself very out of place from his society and upper class upbringing, but knows how to stand up for himself.

River- An exceptional genius who supposedly joined a school for talented children. Her brother Simon soon figured out that they were keeping her there against her will and that something was wrong. After Simon helped her escape, River is very much out of her normal mind. Along with having some telepathic abilities, River can go into chaotic outbursts, erratic behavior and seemingly unpredictable behavior, including exhibiting high combat skills.
