Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and other wonderful children's books, has passed away at the age of 78, presumably of natural causes.

E-T-A: He was 83, died of complications from a stroke.

My youngest daughter is 28. I can still remember how much she and her sister laughed at Max and the wild rumpus, and the sorta scary bakers of In the Night Kitchen. They understood Max's bad temper and rebelliousness. I was looking forward to reading the books, soon, to my granddaughter, age 22 months, and our foster granddaughter, age 2 1/2.

The books live on, of course, but I'm blue, and I'll miss the thought that Mr. Sendak is out there, thinking up more strange stuff for kids.

Y'all BrownCoats have let me down.

I thought at least some of you would have been grown-ups, and had kids. Or woulda had cool parents who read you some of his books when you were little. Or woulda seen the movie of Where the Wild Things Are, back in 2009.

I'm disappointed in y'all, not bein' hip, or cool, or BAD!, or SHINY!, or whatever.

Oh, well, if ya ever have kids, or grandkids, remember his name, and those book titles. THEY'LL love 'em.

Share your sentiments. I certainly remember reading his books as a kid...and with my own little "wild things" these days! My kids are particularly fond of the Little Bear series, which he illustrated so beautifully.
