Hello all,
A newbie here with one of those dangerous things, a thought. We've all seen Juliette Landau's work w/Joss on BTVS, wonder how a story thread would run in a new series with her in it as a prototype for what they were making River Tam into. Say sent out on a first mission in Serenity valley and left for dead by the Alliance when the battle was over or hid w/the surviving Independents. She turns up later on Serenity on a mission, either personal or for remnant Independent forces hiding out along the rim?

Now that is a scary thought...

You know, I don't trust that Drusilla (character)...

But I like to think of River as a Drusilla type. She's not EXACTLY like Dru, but kind of out of it b/c of what she's been through.

If you're sugguesting Vampires or monsters, it's told that there aren't any. But then again, I have no idea what you're talking about I_I;;

I was thinking alittle of Drusilla, but more of the procognitive ability, her appearance (a lot like Summer Glau) plus Juliette was a dancer and that could have been used as part of the plot line, an exceptional performer caught by the men w/blue hands. Juilette has an intensity when she acts that Joss really uses at times, combine that with whatever they were making River into, but gone rogue and you have an interesting story. Plus I just like Juliette. :-)

Wow...I didn't know Juilette was a dancer...

I guess that's another question for Joss: "Is River a Dru prototype."

With Joss I think he likes to use the actor's full potential. Like with River, being a dancer she walks along the ship like she's in a recital or moves with emotion.
Hell even having Giles play a guitar and sing since Anthony is a really good musician.

KOZURE

With River, Drusilla, and to a lesser extent Cordelia in Angel, Joss is riffing on a very, very old (6,000 yrs plus) archtype - the seer who is punished for their "gift" of foresight.

Each of them suffers for their ability to see in the future. River has lost her gifts of lucid intelligence and is reduced to an almost autistic state. Drusilla is barking mad (literally, in one or two scenes). Cordelia has crushing, migraine-like visions.

In many mythos, the prophet is afflicted in some way - Tiresias is blind, Cassandra is doomed to have no one believe her, Jonah must endure trials in the belly of a whale for his lack of faith.

Joss draws on this concept in all of his "prophetess" characters - those who can see the future pay a terrible price.

I don't think she should be River's prototype...because I think River was a botched experiment or not even finished yet. So maybe River's the prototype and Juliet Landau could play the final product/result of Blue Sun's work. Just a thought.
