RAGNAROKGS

All that I have been hearing on the net is "oh, firefly is just too far fetched for me... you can't have a space western!" I think its time someone took a look at how real Firefly really is.
In today's world, people live in different places. Some live in cities, some live in the country, and some live in between. Cities also have rich sectors and poor sectors, its just the way things are. Also, our world is becoming bigger all the time. We first saw it with the advent of the automobile, then the airplane, and now the beginnings of space exploration.
The problem is that most people look at the show with today's scope and mindset; the show is not based on the world of today! In the show's world, things have gotten so large that entire planets are taken up by single cities, each having poor and rich sectors. And if planets can be taken up by cities, then some must also be rural, to account for the percent of the total population that chooses to live in the country. Even the rural areas (or planets, as it were) will have poor sectors and therefore not have newer technologies. As Joss himself has said before, even if mankind did invent some kind of ray gun or laser rifle, not everyone would be able to afford it.
True, Firefly is not realistic in today's world, but it is not supposed to be! It takes place in the future!
Another method of measuring realism in Firefly is to compare it with other shows in its genre. Hm.... well, most of those have been cancelled. But I can say one thing: Firefly is the only true futuristic science fiction show I know of that doesn't include aliens. While I do believe in extra-terrestrials, society as a whole does not. The fact that Firefly includes no ET's should alone be enough to show its true realism.
The reason I wrote this is to protest to the number one problem those who don't like Firefly seem to have in common. Too many people are shutting it off prematurly and not giving it a chance because they don't think its realistic. Granted, no science fiction show can be that realistic, but the entire point of the genre is to leave a little reality behind.
Unfortunately, the people who should be reading this post, aka those who oppose Firefly for its "lack of realism", probably will never see it . But I do urge anyone reading who hears the "realism complaint" spoken of around them to also speak up, and tell people exactly what they are missing.
Lets just all pray that FOX listens to the fans and not the dumbasses who never give it a chance when deciding whether or not to cancel this wonderful show.
