A relatively rare genre really but always the one used when describing Firefly. I was wondering about other examples, anyone in their 20's should remember the cartoon "Bravestar" and others may also remember the "Galaxy Rangers", definately a favourite. There must be others out there, or if not it is worth reminising about some great cartoons of the 80's.

Ah yes, Cowboy Bebop is definitely a good example. The music on the first episode and throughout the series also matches the Western theme also found throughout Firefly.

I have missed out on Cowboy Bebop and I can only find Region 1 DVDs of the series for sale, foiled again by not buying a multi region player, though the Film is available for us in the UK, will i be missing a lot if I skip staight to it without watching the series?

the film is a weak shadow of the sessions. it's not bad, but you really miss out on a LOT if you don't get to see the whole series. check Ebay. i am pretty sure i saw some region 2 (PAL) format DVD sets somewheres around there

The definition of "Sci-Fi/Western" depends on how you look at it.

On one hand, you have Firefly, which is frontier-land in space. Other examples exist, but we have the best, so let's stick to it.

On the other hand, from a thematic point of view, a Western isn't just horses, cattle, tumbleweed, etc. Westerns, thematically, are about one guy or small band of folk making their way in new and strange land, at odds with those around them.

So, in that sense, a "Sci-Fi/Western" could also be example-ated by a bunch of movies--"Escape from New York" and, yes, the sequel, "Escape from L.A." You also have "Soldier," not my favorite movie but along the thematic lines of Sci-Fi/Western, also.

In some ways, "Battlestar Galactica" is in this genre, too--a convoy of wagons bearing people to the Western USA becomes a fleet of ships taking refugees to a new world. The bad cowboys become the evil Cylons. Marshal Earp or somesuch becomes Commander Adama.

So, you can plainly see, it all depends on your viewpoint.

Okay, have I pontificated enough yet?

If you are not limiting yourself to film/tv, you could include many of the books of Robert Heinlein, most notably Farmer in the Sky, Tunnel in the Sky, and the Dora section of Time Enough For Love.
Tunnel, for example, opens and closes with the image of a horse-drawn waggon-train, complete with dogs, goats, chickens etc, rolling through a 'stargate' for a new life on a frontier planet.

I really do NOT know why more of Heinlein's work hasn't been translated to visual media.

I'll cast another vote for Cowboy Bebop. Excellent show. Great characters.
