So, the Alliance has weird rules on abandonment and salvage, relative to current ones and history.

But, shouldn't Serenity have quite a bit more loot? And accumulated things like the bounty hunter's runabout, stray weapons recovered from opposition, etc.

I mean, pre-emptive archeology is a time honored tradition.

They're smugglers and thieves. Not fences. Not a storage facility. They need to offload whatever they get as soon as possible, clear the hold, get rid of incriminating evidence, get cashy money for it. They need to travel light. If they come across something they like, they might do an upgrade, but there is no reason to accumulate stuff. Only keep what they need.
Can't be a pack rat living on a ship.

Makes sense. Still, that would supplement things nicely.

I remember when I managed a self storage facility. The abandoned wares were quite substantial.

Hmmm, Jayne's entire wall of weapons could have been taken from people who tried to kill him.

Got another example. Bushwacked. Whole ghost ship of salvage. Kaylee pulls that engine part out of the ghost ship and it sparks and she says something like Oh, that's a good one. They were pulling parts and taking food from the galley and then Mal and Zoe found the locked vault with the really valuable stuff. Mal said Leave the rest. We take this. ... then River came in.

I'm in agreement with Jewel Staite fan, especially if they are doing planet side and lunar landings and takeoffs, any extra junk they are hauling around burns more fuel in atmo, when you are living on the raggedy edge and trying to keep the ship in fuel, it doesn't make sense to hoard stuff.

Agreed. I also agree they probably keep what they can use and sell the rest for whatever they can get for it. May not get much, or even what an item might actually be worth, but every little bit keeps them in fuel and food.

I suspect Mal may have some rock that he may keep certain items. The ambulence, for instance, may be parked on some dead moon. But the Serenity was a smuggling vessel, so like the cattle, the Serenity crew got rid of them as quickly as possible.

I always figrured that the bulf of the stash would be cached elsewhere....port of call means customs/Port Authority type checks.Be kin dof a bummer for the dummied up ID to hold and get nailed due to some loot they figured had cooled enough to move with them.
Beyond necessitites(food,meds,fuel&life support /defense implements)cash is king-and has no provenance.

I figure they got rid of "accumulated" goods as quick as they could, for whatever cash they could get, since they always seem to be on the raggedy edge, money-wise.

As for the weapons, I conjure Mal and Zoe have their favorites, which might not be the *best* weapons, but they're keeping them for comfort and familiarity, AND for sentimental reasons, while Jayne seems the type to constantly be "upgrading" his arsenal, always looking out for something new, unique, or just BETTER than what he's got. He's the real gun slut of the ship, so the others would likely just as soon unload any weapons that fell in their laps (or got dropped there by, say, some of Patience's men...). Jayne's probably not averse to selling off weapons, as long as he's always keeping the best ones for himself and selling of his lesser ones for the ship's general fund.

I'm pretty sure I accumulate them. I don't really collect them, except in the sense that I figure just about any firearm is going to go up in value as time goes by. I buy what I like, and use 'em. Never sold any either.

The MAK-90 that I bought a year or so ago for $400, I could've sold for double that a few months ago. That was why I bought it, really - because I knew it was underpriced in the market at the time. I probably SHOULD HAVE sold it, because the $800 I'd get would've bought a nice PSL, the value of which seems to be holding pretty steady in the $700 range...
