Could it be the gaseous entity that rescues and heals Zephram Cochran from the original Trek episode Metamorphosis?

The Companion, as named by Cochran, provided food, drink, and emotional support for him for decades.

Then, in a final act of true companionship, the entity sacrifices her immortality to join with a dying female, to become his human Companion.

Truly a noble and selfless entity (in so far as any entity can be truly selfless)...still, I think I'd rather spend the evening (doing just about anything) with Inara.

Inara really is something, by which I guess I really mean Morena. The way she played the scene in the Serenity ep where Mal is "introducing" her to Book...it's pretty impressive to pass off being called a whore with that much aplomb.

Still...what would Rorschach do?

I agree. For a women in her 20's, Inara has a lot of confidence, grace, and class. Her Companion training made her into a women who can speak with an authoritarian tone when necessary, or be a kind and gentle soul as well. I'm re-watching all the original Trek episodes, and watching Metamorphosis the other night reminded me how much of Roddenberry's vision has been used and built upon for everything that has followed.

I had to look up the publishing date, and it's a little over five years after Trek had it's run, but Heinlein's "Time Enough for Love" was almost certainly an influence on Firefly.

Mass exodus from Earth? Check
Rich central worlds? Check
Quasi western frontier planets? Check
Politically powerful courtesan class? Check
Big Damn Hero? Big Damn Check.
Reavers? Check, although mentioned only briefly and not called as such.

It's also worth noting that in the Official Map of the Verse, there is a star named Heinlein, and two of the Planets are Lazarus and Dora, two of the characters from TEfL.

Check it out sometime.
