BLACKOPS

Hello fellow Browncoats,

After watching the entire season of Firefly and Serenity 2 days ago, I've fallen in love with this series. It's sad that I didn't know this show even existed until Adam Baldwin appeared on "Chuck" and Summer Glau on "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

In any case, I would love for Firefly to once again grace the small screen weekly but unfortunately, Joss doesn't think it's possible, according to his Q&A interview in Sydney Australia. I know I'm just a n00b and there are many seasoned Browncoats like yourself out there but here is my humble idea to bring firefly back:

I notice there is a poll to see how willing Browncoats are to contribute money to help produce Firefly or a Serenity sequel on this site. I say lets take it a step further.

1) Research as to how much it cost to produce a sequel or a season of Firefly.

2) Start a website and get pledges from Browncoats to see if the fans as a community can contribute enough money for the project.

3) If it looks promising, start a committee to formally asks studios/sponsors/businesses to support us. Since the fans will carry most of the financial burden, it should be easier to swallow. Perhaps talk to Sci-fi about possible pickup.

4) Collect $ from pledges (Via paypal, credit cards, etc.) There needs to be a policy on oversight and accountability just as any fund raising drive.

5) If the big screen is not possible, it can go straight to DVD like what they're doing with Stargate SG-1.

I see a lot of fan site and groups for firefly and even a Browncoat cruise but if we can bring everyone under 1 site, one community with one sole effort, it may be possible. At the very least, we can preserve the Firefly universe and make it as well known as Star Trek, Stargate or Starwars. Tell me what you think.

JONGSSTRAW

Welcome BlackOps!
Glad you discovered the Firefly 'verse and all the glory that it is. I'm not qualified to respond to your ideas on resurrection because I'm pretty new myself...about 1 1/2 years a Browncoat.

You'll soon be greeted by many folks here who are closer to the subject, and have earned a position of respect due to their efforts for the last 6 years. Just keep watchin' 'em and enjoy!

MARTIANWAY

Hey! Like Jongsstraw, I'm a bit of a nooblet; if I were you, I'd head down to the guerilla marketing section to get a better idea of what folk are plotting now. Last I heard, we were joining the Universal Board en masse, after they pointedly created a Firefly forum (I'm MartianWay there, too). Boards have gotten a little quiet lately; it's nice to have young blood like you around!

The fundraising idea is interesting; if you're serious you should air it around a little bit and see how many people are willing to pony up. I know I'd donate a good bit of cash to this fund, if it existed; but I dunno if my own gives would be more than a drop in a very large bucket. Also, somebody with the knowledge and capability to do so would have to set up the fundraising site; I have neither the knowledge nor the capability, so I canna really help you much on that one.

Speaking of knowledge (and capability), you oughta post this same thread on the SciFi and Universal boards. 'Cause if anyone would want to know about money, it's them...

BlackOps,

I know the raise money for sequel seems like a great idea. But right now, Hollywood is not ready for it. A Browncoat actually started collecting money a year or so ago. He stopped and returned all the money after someone in the know in Hollywood talked to him.

It was explained to the Browncoat that it might actually be bad for Joss for fans to raise money for a sequel. It would scare Hollywood people away from Joss. Hollywood doesn't want to deal with 100,000 bosses.

Joss knows where we are. He can post directly to http://whedonesque.com/ if he decides he wants to raise money on his own for a movie/show.

Hope for more Firefly/Serenity rests with the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD (Release date: 8/21/2007)
See http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846
Joss Whedon interview at Comic Con 2007

And the cast commentary is very shiny!

We keep introducing people to Firefly/Serenity.
Joss and the actors keep building their fanbases.
We keep buying/plugging Firefly/Serenity DVDs, Official Merchandise, Screenings, *NEW* comics etc.

We hold til Mal gets back.

STRANGEBIRD

All I can say is welcome aboard BlackOps. I knew our Big Damn Heroes would be bringing in more Browncoats. I'm also fairly new. I've been a Browncoat for only a couple years and mostly lurking in the background learning from the originals as much as I could. I only recently started posting regularly here myself. Since I quit my job anyway.

Good to see such devotion from the newer fans coming in from Chuck/Atlantis/Terminator:SCC. Think about what happened after the original Trek series got canceled. The number of fans swelled to huge numbers and it took years to get a movie. We got ours sooner. Of course most things happen a whole lot faster these days. Don't despair. A lot of folks will say Firefly/Serenity is dead. While that may be true in the sense of a continuation of the original series I personally doubt we will never see anymore from the 'verse. Joss loves it more than any fan ever could. It was his baby, a baby that was brutally butchered and murdered by Fox Execs then resurrected over at Uni, but a baby none the less.

Buy the dvds, the books, the t-shirts, the posters... tell everyone and anyone who will listen. It's the best way to promote the 'verse. Don't go too crazy or most folks will laugh at you and never watch it thinking it's a show for loony scifi geeks. Believe me it's happened to me once or twice. The best way to ensure a future is to spread the word. Simple as that.

Anyone else notice how I started this post with "All I can say is welcome..."? I know.. I am far too long winded.

NCBROWNCOAT

Welcome BlackOps.

I've been here since the BDM in 2005. Our best hope is raising awareness with Universal that the fan base is growing.

Introduce other people to the 'Verse. Use the current series/movies that the BDH's are appearing in as an opening.

"You like (Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin) in (Waitress, SCC, Stargate Atlantis, Chuck)? Here's a great little series that (he/she) was in back in 2002. And there's a movie that follows it."

I've converted one coworker so far and working on another who remembered Nathan from One Life to Live.

Buy the BDM-CE and other licensed merchandise. And give it for gifts. Uni see $. I've become a collector of 'Verse realted stuff. Got the Mal/River/Jayne action figures, the Reaverized Serenity ornament the QMX wavecards. and various t-shirts. I've preordered the new comics and the Fruity Oaty lunch box. I want the Mal stunt pistol so badly that I can feel it in my hands but it's too expensive.

Promote and support the BDH's and Joss's other works. I love Chuck and can't wait for Dollhouse from Joss.

I'm also a member of Nathan Nation. We're a fan group that loves our Captain and does things to make people aware of his awesomeness as an actor and human being. It includes helping with KidsNeedtoRead. A literacy charity that he founded along with his author friend, PJ Haarsma.

Above all, stay active in this and other boards. We need your energy. Listen and contribute to the discussions and maybe we'll all together come up with the perfect marketing campaign that will get us another movie, but until that happens keep the faith and enjoy the ride on Serenity, the only place I could ever be.

BTW have you gotten your virtual Browncoat yet? I'm sure FollowMal or her assistant Floral Bunny will be by soon and find one in the closet. I'm sure that there's at least one left.

Oh, and the buffet is open too. We have cheese, strawberries, chocolate and if you're of age a choice between Mudder's Milk or Kaylee's inter engine brew. Enjoy!

I think we should keep boycotting everything that is FOX... Its sometimes hard to do, I confess to watching football, I watched Summer on the new show, but in my opinion the show stinks, River is Okay but this show won't last one season. Its sad because they could have used the money that they spent on Sarah Conner to bring back firefly.... I hate FOX.

I think FollowMal is having internet problems so I'll look around for the key to the closet (rumages aroundv a bit).

Here it is! (Passes Vertigo and BlackOps a virtual Browncoat).

I'm sure FM doesn't mind me passing them out in her absence The buffet is open!

Tristan makes a shiny Browncoat. It's really authentic. Abbeyshot also sells them but they are EXPENSIVE!

BTW I just got Sewing for Dummies and using a pattern I found there I'll be experimenting with a minature version using a leather like vinyl for my Mal action figure.

I hate Fox too, trust me. Fox kicked us in our collective nuts when they canceled Firefly. However, I'm still watching Sarah Connor because I still have hopes for it and because I want to support Summer. Heck, if Drive was still on I'd watch Fox for that too. I just want to support Firefly stars and give them some uninterrupted work. Unfortunately, FOX sucks so yea, they'll massacre Sarah Connor and it'll get canceled. =(
