Alternative Marketing Concept for Serenity/Firefly.

A great many threads on this site take it for granted that the ultimate purpose of Serenity The Movie is to get a TV series back on the air. I'm not opposed to this idea; I'd love to see Joss free to paint on the broad canvas he prefers.

But... Why does that have to be on broadcast, or even cable?

It wasn't broadcast TV that convinced Universal that Serenity/Firefly was a viable commercial product; it was sales of the DVD box set. A format that effectively didn't exist five years ago.

In Japan, Anime series are often produced as OAV (Original Animation Video) sets. Shows have been released in this format, to great success, for nearly two decades. It's a concept that hasn't really breached the American entertainment industry's consciousness yet. But the idea of a defunct series being revived through DVD sales is a new one too.

Picture a new series being produced directly for DVD release, a new disk every two months or so, two episodes per disk. After a disk has been out for six months to a year, the individual episodes might be released to cable outlets, to generate a second source of income (and advertise the series' existence to those without DVD players.)

Before you reject the idea, consider this: If someone were to offer you a second box set, twelve new, unaired episodes, original cast, w/Joss producing, how much would you be willing to pay for it? Under this plan, you'd get that many episodes in a year. Even if it cost more per disk (after all, there wouldn't be a network underwriting the original production), wouldn't it be worth it?

DVD is a format whose potential has not yet been fully explored. Perhaps it's time to think outside the box (set).

I think if it went over $100 I might hesitate, but that would be a very reasonable amount to pay for twelve episodes of Firefly, in my opinion, especially if that was the only venue it was being produced for.
