America loves a winner!

It played in Pakistan ? That alone has me stunned.

The foreign gross on bom.com states it's only made $13,354,947 (as of Jan 29,2008 ) , while the figures at whedonesque state $14,935,769. Has it made that much more in the last 6 months ?

And even so, it's a slim margin over the budgeted amount. Does such a low profit really mean that much ?

Just askin for answers.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Just bragging rights. As Joss states Hope rests with the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD.

Universal stopped the International Releases when it got close to budget. For example, the planned Japan release was cancelled.

But Serenity is now into the Black in theatrical according to Joss. Admitted by studio in writing to him. Still, I do not think this statement means profit with theatrical only. Just some amount over budget.

So after all is said and done, was Serenity profitable? Do you consider it a success?

Joss Whedon (JW): It's a success to the studio or else we wouldn't be doing a special edition DVD. They actually admitted as much on paper, which you know studios are loathe to do, and that was actually from the theatrical. Theatrical was a disappointment, as everyone knows, but it did go into the black.

So give me hope for a Serenity II

JW: Hope for it probably rests with this DVD.

So I went and checked Box Office Mojo and added up the foreign totals individually.

According to Box Office Mojo, Production Budget was $39 million. So Domestic Total Gross: $25,514,517 + Foreign Total Gross: $14,935,769 = $40,450,286.

Here are the figures if you want to check my math:

$2,427,169.00
$169,062.00
$68,698.00
$84,382.00
$5,962.00
$13,177.00
$541,497.00
$1,221,745.00
$36,765.00
$107,531.00
$18,166.00
$206,942.00
$97,679.00
$224,726.00
$57,342.00
$14,403.00
$221,620.00
$1,691,368.00
$1,580,822.00
$1,018,603.00
$55,125.00
$27,573.00
$205,216.00
$4,840,196.00
--------------
$14,935,769.00

Ukraine 10/13/05 $205,216 Final
United Kingdom and Ireland and Malta 10/7/05 $4,840,196 11/30/05

-----------------------------------------
But then I began to wonder about the Russia figures and why they weren't all included in the foreign total.
-----------------------------------------
I'm not even sure now that I am showing that the Box Office Gross figures are more than Budget because

The difference between Box Office Mojo's foreign total figure and the individual added up totals is exactly $1,580,822 Russia - CIS. They then have another Russia figure 1,691,368. So unless the Real Russia figure is + 1,580,822 + 1,691,368 = $3,272,190. Maybe the Russia - CIS figures were replaced by the other Russia figure and that is why it is not added in their total.

I'm not trying to show profit. Serenity Worldwide Box Office more than Budget.

Even if you take out the Russia - CIS figure. Serenity was only $130,536 below Budget. It is entirely possible that that $130,536 has been made up since 2005 and not been posted on Box Office Mojo. The studio could be adding up film rental fees and ticket sales. The Can't Stop the Serenity screenings would have accounted for at least $23,500 in film rental fees. 47 screenings x $250 each x 2 (2006 + 2007) And Serenity keeps screening. It just had two midnight screenings this weekend. And there at least two more around the release of Serenity Collector's Edition.

That's nice, but I agree with Joss in that the real money and profitability is in the DVD. While the cumulative worldwide release helped to make the movie break even, it is by no means a huge hit. It's a success in that they didn't lose money, but Joss and the cast won't be lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills anytime soon (does anyone know if Joss or the cast smokes in real life?).

It's not on the same level as say with Judd Apatow and his movies. His films are cheaper than Joss' (since his movies are mostly people talking), but make a huge profit. KNOCKED UP only cost about 30 mil to make, it's domestic gross alone is almost $150 million dollars. That's five times the budget.

You compare that to a meager profit of a million and half worldwide, you'd better hope the DVD makes a killing, because that's going to be the only source of revenue for your passion project.

I think that there are going to be two things that'll determine whether or not SERENITY 2 gets made.

1) The CE DVD sales

2) The two guys in charge at Universal (don't know their names) realizing "If we can blow $175 million on EVAN ALMIGHTY and still keep our jobs, then I don't think the board is going to mind 50 mil for SERENITY 2."

**************************************************
"And it starts with a sentence that might last a lifetime, or it all might just go down in flames. If I let you know me, then why would you want me? Each day I don't is a shame. Each day I don't is a great shame."

Loudon Wainwright III - "Strange Weirdos" off the "Knocked Up" soundtrack

my hope is that all the Galactica crew who are keen to make a movie that aint gonna happen decide to take up Firefly instead.

A lotta talk about straight to dvd movies - i still believe there is a cutting edge out there waiting to happen where straight to dvd series - not just features could happen. Babylon 5 (of all things) showed the way with the movies now Firefly should go forth and PIONEER.

CERES

A while back I read a movie industry special of the Journal of Cultural Studies. In the part about movie profits it was stated that, 'Eight out of ten movies lose money, and just over six per cent of all movies made 80 per cent of total profits in Hollywood over the past decade.'
So I guess any profit at all is a big plus point.
