I assume that this is being done, to some extent, but the emphasis here seems to be more on the online polls which are impressive. But those who have dvr or tivo, set Firefly to record whenever it's on, and those who don't? Watch it when its on, if you feel i like it. I assume that the DVR recording it counts as a viewer on whatever system counts views... so anything that shows we still care, is a good idea.

Maybe there's some intricacies of how viewership is determined that I don't know, but please excuse any ignorance on my part. That's all.

TRAILRUNNERMARK

For broadcast television the viewership is determined by a company like AC Neilson. They set up a random sampling of homes with equipment and software that can monitor what is being tuned in, and the occupants "click" in to indicate they are in the room and watching. Based on the sample from the Neilson families they determine how many people are watching the show using statistical methods.

If you record the show to watch later it may not count since you didn't indicate that you were watching at the time it was being broadcast. After all, the whole point of the exercise is to sample how popular a show is (and what kinds of people watch it) so that they can figure out how much to charge advertisers (who in the end are the ones paying to produce the show)

Not sure how it would work with Tivo, but I expect they might be able to gather some statistics on what people are looking for, unless the requests are stored locally in the Tivo box and it just scans all program listings for your area.

I was almost part of the Neilson family, but there were telco problems installing the system in our home so they couldn't do it. Sigh.....

Hm I never knew how that really worked. That's interesting. Then I suppose everyone should disregard my comment for purposes other than simple enjoyment, unless you are a neilson family, or know one, in which case, you should make sure its known that people care.
