Ok, I can't find my answer staring me in the face yet, so I'll ask the obvious...

What's all this talk about two pilots? I saw Train Job and assumed it was the pilot, at least that's what was advertised as the pilot episode. Then I hear that a 2-hour ep called "Serenity" was the original pilot. Is FOX out of their stupid corporate minds (again)?

I liked what I saw in Firefly. The effects were especially good. But I was really lost on a lot of the characters, didn't feel like a pilot.

Did I miss Serenity somehow? How did all of you see it before Train Job? Will they re-air Serenity?

Thanks!

The Train Job is the "premiere" ep. Not the same as the pilot. A pilot is an episode they make just to sell the show. There are often a lot of changes between the pilot and the show, and it's not unusual to hold back the pilot. Star Trek was famous for having its first pilot rejected and never aired in its entirety. (They did use parts of it for "flashback" sequences.) The second pilot was accepted, and eventually broadcast, but not as the first episode.

The pilot for Firefly was a two-hour (counting commercials) thing that was also meant to be an initial episode. That "girl in a box" scene they advertised to death was in the pilot. Which was a pity, because the fact that the box has a girl in it was supposed to be a plot twist. Anyway, the network didn't like the pilot. Officially it was too slow and dark. But I think they also didn't care for the "bad" English used by some of the characters, and wanted some scenes reshot so that everybody "talked right".

Which is probably where the 40-minute version comes from. They needed something to show to reviewers and affiliates, but they couldn't show them the pilot. So they edited it down enough to show off the "good parts".

A bootleg of the pilot is doing the file-sharing rounds. Unfortunately, it's pretty bad quality.

JOSH, WHERE'S MY CHECK???!!!

Sh-huh?! "Talked right?" As a Southern woman I find that downright offensive. Sure they all sounded like my grandparents, but dang it all I considered that a compliment to the sort of salt of the earth people who still use phrases like "some such" and "down yonder". I'm more than happy to leave the high falutin' talk to those damn Yankees like River with her "its not relevant" and Simon with his purty rich boy clothes. "Talked right" my ever-lovin ass!

Sorry, didn't mean to insult regional styles of speech. Quite the opposite -- language is too beautiful a thing to leave in the hands of the academic purists. Alas, those purists write nasty letters when a TV character doesn't conjugate verbs "correctly". Which is why the network made them get rid of the dialect.

Which is a pity. The use of dialect enhanced the sense of being in another time. Which was probably Whedon's intent. Oh well.

Oh, Z! I was simply mocking those idiots at FOX. Although it surprises me that they purport to know what proper speech entails considering they're the network that brought Celebrity Boxing to trailer parks everywhere.
