Jane Espenson has said that Mal was based on Joss, that Zoe was based on Marti Noxon. Who were the others based on, if anyone at all?

I always thought he read a book on the aftermath of civil war that's how it started. Developed into FF. The Tempest also, Cowboy Bebop, and Briscoe County JR. I know R2D2 came from Huey, Dewey, and Lewey off of Silent Running 1972.

I think I remember reading that, too, but I think it was Jane Espenson that said that when Joss was first explaining to her what the series would be, either he said that Mal and Zoe were based on him and Marti, or maybe that's what she took from it.

You know, I kind of think I remember an article or something where Alan actually said he believed Joss created Wash after himself because of the Hawaiian shirt thing. Maybe each character is really loosely based on different parts of his personality? I also remember Joss saying that Oz from BUFFY was the only character he created completely from someone he knew, but of course that was several years before FIREFLY.
