Hi all!
I'm doing a project in my university of Firefly, and I was wondering what technology does the Firefly ships use for transport. Does they use Hiperspace? It's quite particular the way they accelerate in space, with the green light tail. But I think they never explain what principle they use for traveling, how long it takes to get to what distances, what absolute velocities they reach, etc.

Does anyone of you know that sort of details?

Thank you very much!

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

They use fuel cells for propulsion. There is no faster-than-light travel in the 'verse. We get a few travel times, but not really distances. I think there might be some details in the RPG book, though that isn't strictly canon.

The 'verse (what the characters use the word to mean, at least) is a single solar system, so mapping distances would be useless (everything's moving).

No FTL-travel (Joss noted that the exodus from Earth used generation ships --an entire generation of people were born, lived, and died before ever seeing the new system), and the speeds Serenity acheives aren't hinted to be relativistic (though I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they lose minutes or even hours every now and then, especially on long flights).

We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

A did a few rough calculations last time this topic came up and it turned out that they lost something like 3 minutes over the 18 hour journey Wash mentions in Out of Gas. At least I think that's what it came out as - I can't find the old post...
