Hey all, was just watching SAFE and finally noticed that the Aliance officer calls Mal, Captain Karbatkin.

Why an alias here when the Alliance guy in Bushwhacked obviously knew who he really was?

I believe some of Serenity's paperwork is done under the name "Captain Karbatkin"

Could be Mal forged paperwork.

I remember thinking the same thing at one point.

PALADIN

As a smuggler and small-time liberator of property that belongs to other prople, I'm quite sure Mal has several identities. Most of the Alliance has probably heard of Mal Reynolds and his old Firefly class cargo ship.
Sometimes crossing a checkpoint is a lot easier when you're someone else.

Actually, I thought the opposite - Serenity wasn't really on the radar to now (I figure that if it was, the show would have been Joss's take on the prison drama a la Oz, as they would have been caught). So right now, they can run around a little, not get caught, but just have to be cautious (the cortex in Serenity was just about a Firefly-class vessel)

HARBATKIN

Tis' Harbatkin not Karbatkin, at least that's what it is in the script. The line in the show is hard to distinguish whether he says Harbatkin or Karbatkin.

Most likely the papers are forged or came with the ship from the previous owner. Either way Mal wouldn't use his real identity as he is always trying to stay under the radar of the alliance.
