my 10 year old son thinks River is a demented freak..how do I explain differently

Um...she is mental. Not all the time, but mostly. But considering what was done to her it would have been a miracle if she weren't.

You just may want to explain to him that sometimes things happen to good people that hurts their mind rather than their body, and it can take a long, long time to fix it...and sometimes it just can't be fixed.

Rivers mind is broken and she is slowly recovering ~its like breakinga bone really badly it takes time to get better~, she is still there and aware (mostly) of everything around her and somethings that arnt anywhere near her. She's special.

I would say that the brain is a powerful thing, but that the bad guys really wanted to understand her brain and so they experimented on it. As a result of the experiments, her brain lost its bearing and she's now unwell. Sometimes the experiments make her act strangely.
