I don't know if this is the best place to ask this, but is there a single location with a comprehensive collection of Firefly fanfics, and a way to search them? I have an idea for a story, but I don't want to re-do what's already been done unless it's a significantly different take on a concept. It would take forever even to briefly scan all that's been written one by one, so a search is essential.

Just publish and be damned. If it's similar to someone else's storyline, they will either shrug it off, tell you, or my favoured option, flame like a maniac.

The little voices are better out than in. It can get mighty crowded.

OK. Now on to research. (It's hard enough conforming to someone else's creation, imagine what it's like creating an entire 'verse for someone else to conform to...)

Even if someone else wrote something similar, it was in their language, not yours, and what you do will be unique.

I've accidentally had a similar storyline as someone else - recently, in fact! - and it was fascinating to see how the two of us handled similar challenges. We even swapped a few mails about it, it was fun!

So write away, I can't wait to see what you come up with!

You could also peruse fanfiction.net/tvshows/firefly for fic...they currently show 1,863 separate entries for firefly fic. While I don't know if this is more than is on this site, I've found that many of them are short little musings...sometimes no more than a paragraph or two.

However...there is another school of thought on this...

Some will tell you NOT to look at other's works before you write. You are much more likely to be influenced (even subconsciously) and thus your original work may take on someone else's tone.

I agree with those above. Write your story.

As for your question, JUST DO IT! If all of us lived in terror of recreating someone else's idea, we'd never have started writing in the first place. :)

Seems to me that fanfic writers are conforming to Joss 'verse. That's a conformity I surely don't mind. Write the damn story. Write, write, write. It's the only way of life.
