Well I've more or less decided that there is no way for a truly consistent ep order. Watching them with the GF all the way through I will certainly admit that the DVD order is better. (Though I wonder though if "Safe" would have broken my heart the way it does if I'd seen it so early.)

I just came up with 2 new bones of contention. And yep, one of them is River. (The other one is Simon.) And it's not even the "mind reading genius" line from The Message or "kill you with my brain" from Trash.

In Objects in Space River "overhears" Jayne thinking "I got stupid, the money was too good." Not that this isn't still true no matter what Simon knows, but when we saw this ep "live" it was a setup for River and Simon eventually finding out about the betrayal at Ariel. It might still be true, but everyone else is thinking "secrets" and Jayne's no longer has any reason to be there (dramaticly). A major strike against OiS being before Trash.

In Jaynestown Kaylee makes a big flap over not ever hearing Simon swear. In Safe he swears up a storm (at Serenity no less). Don't try to tell me she meant he never swears in English, I ain't buying it. Of course also in Safe Simon talks about not being around for the first decent wound on the ship. In the airing order that means he must have forgotten about Mal's little mishap in Out of Gas. I guess Mal's sword wound in Shindig wasn't major, regardless.

Especially witht the later episodes I think that they all have slightly contradictory elements, especially where River and Inara are concerened. OiS is a great ending point (for now) for the show, but I think it's last more for the vibe it leaves than because it makes the most sense.

Just my $0.02. Keep flying.

"You ain't all that funny."

Well, yeah, there are a few continuity gaffs because of:
a) normal problems with keeping track of details
b) filming/airing problems

Still, either of these can be dismissed.

Jayne's had any number of moments where he was stupid because the money was too good.
It's unresolved whether or not he helped the Fed from the pilot escape, for example.

Kaylee may have been exagerrating when she said, "never" hearing Simon swear.

The problem we face when being continuity cops is the fact that TV characters, like real people, don't always speak the whole truth.

The series is wonderful. It isn't perfect, either by design or lack thereof. Joss set the order of the episodes. We can take any flaws with a grain of humanity.
