i'm wondering if anyone knows how river ended up in the hands of the alliance at the start of the serenity movie? this wasn't explained in the movie. i've been pondering about it for some time.

the tam family believed the alliance facility was a school for gifted children, river chose to go there.
was there for a couple of years til simon learned the truth.

at the end of the series, the bounty hunter failed to capture river. how come in the movie she got captured by the alliance and was in the facility? it wasn't explained how she ended up in there.

The first scene in the movie was a flashback as was said. It was the original escape from the Academy, even if it was revised version of it where Simon actually did the rescuing instead of just paying people for it (the only thing in the movie that broke series canon but it was Joss's decision to do so for the movie).

As you remember in the movie, the Operative was in the records room and was watching a recording of the rescue... the original rescue that got River out of the Academy and consequently in the Eavesdown Docks in Serenity the pilot episode.

So River was not captured again.
