Maybe I missed the consenses, but which way is the symbol supposed to point? I have seen the star facing both upright and upsidedown, and I have only seen a picture of it on Firefly with the star upright and the triangle pointed down.

Where is the reference to the triangle pointing up?

The upsidedown star is a pretty strong occult reference, and seems out of place in the Firefly context. I'm wiccan, so I don't have a problem with it either way, I just don't see it fitting in with the rest of the cultural references.

I missed the triangle pointing down in the
series. Which ep and where?
As I understand the meaning of the pentagram,
pictured upright, it represents universal order
or harmony. Upside-down would mean chaos or
disorder. This your understanding as well?
An inverted star would, for the Independents,
probably serve as a sign that they reject a
"universal order" which the Alliance represents.
I only remember seeing the insignia with the
triangle 'up' and the star 'down'.

Hm. I've seen it point up, upside down and tilted.
Isn't there an OFFICIAL design?

In SerenityP1, when Mal rips off the deceased Lieutenant Baker's patch to give to the radio operator, it looks like it's point down, yellow bars parallel to the ground. But, the camera angle is odd, and the fellow is on the ground.

In The Message, Mal's patch looks like it's point up. You can see it pretty clearly after he gives the order to join up with the 22nd.

Sorry couldn't be more definitive.
